There is no excuse to have a wrong piece of glass shipped, don't know whose fault it was. I have a similar repair, picking up tomorrow, the shop did have to remove the rear glass roof in order to remove the rear trunk lid, which is a bad design to begin with (correction they did not have to remove the glass), but yes they did not break the glass either.

Need to make a correction from my earlier post, my shop did not have to remove the rear roof glass when they replaced the rear trunk lid. They did have a glass guy come to make sure they did it right. They have to paint match a bigger area so my repair has been pushed back a few days. Parts shipment took 5 weeks, repair so far projected at 12 business days. Was able to drive my Model 3 while waiting for parts. Some other Tesla cars in that shop weren't so lucky though. Tesla is working on parts issues. One thing they try to do is in-house minor body repair. But parts distribution needs to be resolved ASAP.

Dom MM I believe you mean insurance. But I have been through this myself where I was involved in a head-on crash. I purchased the bumper cover and headlight. The repair shop took them, painted the bumper and installed both. In turn, the repair shop wrote me a $700 check. Because the insurance paid for it as if the shop bought the parts. cusman aside from them accidentally breaking the original glass I don’t believe the repair shop is to blame. Look at how many other shops and individuals who have had to deal with Tesla from a repair standpoint. Tesla never designed this car to be repaired. Proof of this lies in the almost total lack of access to replacement parts and Tesla’s refusal to support anyone not using a Tesla approved repair facility. Tesla caters to those who don’t repair but replace. Essentially the 10% of our country who replace cars like average people replace televisions. Hopefully rivian does a better job supporting the consumer.

I am so pissed off... I hate that this is happening to you. I feel your pain. Just finished coming out of a rear-ended collision repair on my M3. Cost $7.2K & took 3 1/2 weeks. Look! there is nothing I can say that would make you feel better, but thank you for sharing this experience. So far, I learned that if you own a tesla one must better make sure to choose an insurance company that has good relationships with multiple well know and customer vetted tesla repair shops. In my recent repair experience, Geico wanted me to go to another shop that I felt was not known for repairing teslas. In short, I threatened to enter arbitration with Geico and they accepted my repair shop of choice here in NYC (Precision Auto Works). Having a well know Tesla repair shop will not only ensure they get the work done right but also ensure that they have repair parts on inventory. My repair shop did have a lot of the parts in their inventory. Just the Trunk door had to be order which took 2 weeks as well.

I can totally understand. I had model S, when it slipped on ice on the street close to my house, front right corner hit concrete. Corner of hood (few inches) and bumper cover got hit. Windshield was fine. Body shop was at 3 hrs drive. It took 4-5 months for Tesla to send parts after I started calling Tesla directly per my body shop's suggestion. They did not send all parts. Then sent it without invoice / list per body shop. All parts finally came after 5-6 months. Initial estimate 7500, then 11,000. Body shop took another 5 months and per Tesla directions, they had to replace perfectly fine surrounding parts which increased estimate to 22,000, took more time finally repaired it at 27,000 bill for the insurance. I requested them to extend lease by 12 months since I was paying lease and didn't get to drive for that period, they didn't give me loaner cuz it was 'an accident'. They offered to extend it by only 6 months per general standard. I wanted to buy out at the end of lease but returned it and asked for at least 4 months lease back since Tesla delayed parts. After another 2-3 months they gave me back 2 months lease. Then after exchanging multiple emails, they sent me second check of 2 months lease after another 2 months, which I appreciate. So yeah, thats a real problem. I didn't want to go back to Tesla for that reason but after waiting a year just ordered model 3, cuz Tesla was the best car I had ever driven, including Merc BMW Lexus.

Your insurance company restricting you to only one of the approved Tesla body shops in the area is a good way to ensure a lack of competition, and result in a body shop that doesn't have to perform to stay in business. Secondly, the body shop really didn't have to wait to do a disassembly to determine what other parts underneath might have needed replacement as well. If they want to provide good customer service, they should have just ordered those additional parts, and then if they didn't need to use them, either return them or wait for the next wrecked Model 3 to come their way. This is especially true if parts deliveries can take an excessive amount of time. By not doing so, the body shop effectively built in an all but guaranteed month delay to the repair. Then the body shop breaks the rear window and gets the wrong replacement glass for it. While I could buy either one of these as being perhaps something outside the control of the body shop, the combination leads me to believe that they have some competency issues and probably made a mistake when ordering the replacement glass. If the body shop had ordered the additional parts up front, and if they hadn't broken the rear glass, the car would have been fixed in less than 6 weeks. While this is about 2 to 3 weeks longer than most cars with a similar issue, and I think it's reasonably to pin that 2 to 3 week delay on Tesla, the rest of the delays should really be placed at the feet of your insurance company and the body shop.

I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara that I bought new in Sept. 2018. Right away I could hear rattling in the back cargo area. At first I though it was something I was carrying in the back. After removing everything from the Jeep, it was apparent that was not the case. When I took it in for it's first oil change in Dec. 2018, I complained and the dealer service dept. diagnosed the problem as the rear window seal. They said they would have to order the part. It took a month and the part finally came in and in the beginning of Jan I brought the Jeep back in for the day for them to install the new seal. At the end of the day I got a call from the service advisor that the seal was not the right fix, and that after talking with FCA they were instructed to order a new back window. It has been on order and promised for delivery in Feb, April, and June but the dealer, Auto Nation CDJR of Bellevue WA, claims they never have received it and so I'm still waiting. Finally last week I decided to contact FCA customer care and open a complaint ticket. In speaking with them, it appears that the window has been delivered and invoiced 3 times, but never put on my Jeep. The dealer is I think putting it on other customers vehicles or perhaps 'fixing' new units so they can sell them without a rattle. FCA customer care does not seam to have much authority to fix my problem at all. I love the Jeep, but it appears after the sale service and support is dismal. Based up on TFL's experience with the Tesla, it looks like Atlas has truly shrugged, and we have entered the era of incompetence and mediocrity. Sad to see. I guess that's what you get when everyone gets a medal and overly sensitive snowflakes perceive every interaction as a 'micro-agression'.

If the repair shop broke the roof, they better be providing you a FREE loaner (and pay for the additional repairs). I bet the reason that repairs were so expensive is because the bumper and panels have sensors in them. All new cars are like this, fender benders are super expensive to repair. larry Spiller So you think $10,000 for repair cost and months out of service is acceptable for such minor damage??? You sound like another Tesla fanatic making excuses for a really piss poor company that makes mediocre products. And yet if Ford or GM gave such crappy service you’d probably be screaming bloody murder. The average wait time for ANY automotive glass is hours at most, not days, let alone weeks. Most glass can be replaced in a parking lot by a vendor that comes to you. ONLY TESLA has this issue. That’s because Tesla is an extremely greedy company that’s running a total monopoly on everything to do with Tesla cars. They even want to start selling their customers the insurance for them. I think it’s time for the government to break up their monopoly and force them to use the same dealership network system every other car manufacturer (and many other products as well) is required to use, that completely separates the manufacturer from the sales companies. When they’re all the same company, the customers loose.

If I needed a rear light it would be around $200 more. And it took 4 days. In this car there are no sensors in the bumper (remember Musk claiming cameras where better than Lidar?). This is all on Tesla. The cars aren't properly designed and manufactured and they have a horrible supply chain. Its been almost 2 months. Parts aren't that hard to get a hold of. Seems to me that the repair center you used is at fault of 90% of your issues. They broke the glass because they don’t know how to do their job, then blamed it on Tesla by saying all glasses break; and have you entertained the possibility that the people on the shop ordered the wrong part and just blamed Tesla, seeing how you’re already predisposed against Tesla? Think outside the box buddy. Ask to see the order they submitted to Tesla and check if they did order the right thing.

Luke Walsh Yes, but what everyone is ignoring here is that the long waits and misquotes are because of the repair shop. If the original repair was the broken back window, and that takes 2 months, then yes! There’s a problem here. But the fact that the repair shop PUT them in this bad long wait/repair situation is the fault of the repair shop. The back window is removable without breaking it. For example, if I call in an electrician to repair flickering lights in my new house because I accidentally poured water on the fuse panel, and he tells me, it’s going to cost 1000, orders parts, then says, no wait, will actually cost 5000 because he didn’t see all the damage. Then goes in to fix it and burns the whole house down. Replacement of house under warranty takes a long time (ignoring cost under insurance). See where I’m going? I’m not excusing the fact that 2 months is too long for a window, but it seems that the body shop put them into this place, a very bad place. Anger should be spread evenly between the repair shop and the manufacturer.
@lukeywalsh
@lukeywalsh 5 жыл бұрын
@@danchinnapen5503 Thanks! Good point re the cost/wait could be mainly the shop, not the car. A different shop might be a different owner experience. But if I remember the previous TFLs on this car correctly... - Some (or all?) delays at the depair shop were waiting on parts from Tesla. - This shop was one of the few certified places the insurance company OKd for Tesla repair. - The damage/expense was extensive considering the minor nature of the impact (though many of modern cars are like this now). Typical supply chain or rarity issues associated with exotics. To support your initial point, these issues could be temporary. If the Tesla brand is successful long term, Model 3 parts and repair shops will become more commonplace. Better infrastructure, cheaper to fix. That would be ideal. I'd like to see Tesla succeed. Time will tell. Might take a while for consumer data to show what Model 3 repair times/costs are relative to industry average.
@danchinnapen5503
@danchinnapen5503 5 жыл бұрын
@@lukeywalsh I agree, I'm not excusing Tesla for part delays, but I consider them a leading edge technology that everyone is grabbing, and they haven't yet matured into a real car company yet. They've nailed innovation, and revolutionized the car industry, the buying experience, performance, etc etc and giving the german makers a big scare, but extreme growing pains are what we're seeing. I'm sure over time they'll catch up. And you're right, it shouldn't take this long for parts. But TFL got some bad luck with that shop breaking, and making more mistakes that broke the camels back. The shop seem nice and honest, but are not competent. Likely if it was diagnosed properly from the start/or the right window was ordered, then it wouldn't be much of an issue just an annoyance. Anyways, either way, this puts a microscope of Tesla's main weakness - parts/service. Owners have to cross fingers no damage happens. In the grand scheme of things, i feel Tesla's probably had a bad wrap and amplified by the web. I just met someone who just drove a Model 3 off the lot, but was stressed that people on the net were saying the car makes noise at high speeds. I told him it's a car, not a cloud. Shouldn't it make some noise at high speed - meanwhile you're having the car drive by itself and you're worried about a 2mm gap in a panel? It's like Tesla invented a time machine and a way to give you superpowers, but everyone's bothered that you can only go 100 years back in time instead of a million, and you're limited to only x-ray vision - for now - and there's a panel gap . Anyways, that's another issue, haha.

The Fiat exec replied something to the effect of "It's a convertible, not a U-boat.". Good take on the situation too. Tesla has obviously grown way too fast to be able to keep up with the repair side of things. I don't understand why spare parts should be so hard to produce though. They're obviously getting parts for production. It should be straightforward to order some spare glass panels. Production might be gobbling up the entire supply though.

Actually, its just the difference. The approved body shop is going to be the cheapest. The thing is, in reality, TFL Car has the right to bring their car to any body shop they want, REGARDLESS OF ANYTHING STATE FARM OR TESLA have to say about it. Tesla would still be required to provide the parts and State Farm would’ve still been required to pay the full bill, minus deductible. That’s because the consumers’ right to choose is protected under multiple FEDERAL LAWS and state laws that protect commerce and encourage competition between companies. These laws leave the choice to the customers, NOT either the manufacturer or the insurance company. The laws are very clear...it’s NOT up to either the manufacturer OR the insurance companies. Of course, they’ll NEVER tell you or admit that until you’ve threatened them with a major lawsuit because they don’t want customers bringing their cars to more expensive repair facilities. I learned just how corrupt insurance companies can be after being an assistant manager of a dealership body shop. We used to run into this issue with insurance companies all the time. Some insurance companies were worse than others.

Three points... 1. You keep saying it was a small fender bender but it wasn't... your son slammed the back into a brick wall and it did structural damage to the car! Not a simple bumper fix. 2. I owned a Acura RSX type S and I had the hatch back glass smashed and it took 3 weeks for them to get that piece of glass from the factory. So it's not super uncommon to take a few weeks if you want factory glass, that isn't a windshield. 3. It sounds like you have a body shop problem, not a Tesla problem. A body shop is always going to try and make every penny they can even if it's being careless with a glass panel when they know it's all just going to get charged to insurance anyway. I bet if you took any other Honda, Toyota or BMW to the same body shop you would have ended up with the same issues unless you are ok with the repair shop using aftermarket parts and glass. You should be thanking Tesla, Tesla doesn't allow shops to use aftermarket parts like most of the other car manufacturers do. You even admit at the end you may be a little biased.... (maybe a little salty)? Not a reason to take it out on a company that actually gives a darn about you and your son's future... they have created the safest car on the planet, it has Zero emissions, is beyond fun to drive and takes a few extra weeks to fix because they don't allow aftermarket glass or parts.

I can't understand how they broke not one, but two windshields, supposedly received the wrong replacement part, etc. I get it's frustrating to have a car in shop for a long time to get repaired, but it's not a Tesla only problem. I had to have my engine replaced by VW in a new GTI 2 years ago. It took over two months. I ended up having them buy it back from me, but parts availability can be an issue with any car.

I just took delivery of my Model 3 DM. I have been following this story and TFL for some time. I totally get the emotions. The enjoyment seen in the videos of you guys driving the car is inversely suffered to the Nth degree in frustration and anger. Something you want to like so much causes such pain. I went ahead and ordered anyway. Could not stop myself. I do have a second vehicle should the worse case happen. But I wanted one so bad. Will keep fingers crossed and hope over the next year or so thing s get better and this will be but a bad past memory of the history of the Model 3 and Teslas in general. Hope to see you in the car again soon guys.

I do think you'd had a better experiance if you'd taken your 3 to tesla rather than this shop. Damage done by the shop IS THE SHOPS PROBLEM not yours of your insurances. Been in the auto glass industry 35 years and if, you damage any part of a customers vehicle it is the shops responsiblity to repair at the shops expence.
