The reason it takes this long is due to how Valve updated the BIOS reset after people kept bricking their systems by trying to overclock their memory. Before the patch, the system would boot up at higher frequencies but if the frequency set was incorrect it would fail and never boot - after the patch, the system will boot at extremely slow speeds and ramp up very slowly training memory. Sure, annoying, but much better than the alternative of having an actual brick.

While I agree, valve could at least display something on the screen to indicate the machine is actually doing something

@@BMANZZS I think its because BIOS is in a "safety mode" that it doesn't have the possibility to display since the GPU haven't been activated.

Stuck bios is an issue on any computer with writable bios settings, which the steam deck is. Bios always can get corrupted. Normally disconnecting the battery would help. That's just a bit more involved on the steam deck.

I've had a similar issue with the Nintendo Switch (oled) from my son..was completely dead/ not taking a charge..nothing! A combination of buttons was the fix to reset and works perfect ever since! Maybe more Nintendo Switches with the same problem were scraped for that same issue...

Wonder if that would have fixed my first one that stopped recognizing any button presses from the internal controls. Touch screen worked. The touch pads recognized I was doing things with them (I think) but did not do anything otherwise. And external controllers worked. I tried everything, installing Windows, Re-installing Steam OS multiple times. Had to RMA it

I cannot help but wonder if there's a reasonable explanation for the bios corrupting. Could it be that disconnecting the battery and leaving it disconnected for 5-10 mins causes this? Could it be similar to how on a regular computer, if the cmos battery dies and/or is removed, the computer loses the ability to keep time if it's off for more than a certain time, requiring a manual time-sync every time one logs into Windows/the operating system of choice?

It happened to me once with an old bios reset on a pc. Just forgot about it and it was awake

yes!! i knew it had to be a BIOS problem, Valve patched how it reset sometime after this gen of decks and it caused a LOT of firmware/BIOS issues however, it fixed all the reports they were getting of user error and people bricking their own systems🤣

This was an old issue caused by an update, and that is the only fix for it. There's nothing further that Valve can do unless someone wants to RMA instead of do the button combo themselves. Valve has already corrected what caused the issue.
