This is the perfect Metallica thrasher and one of the best and most pure representations of thrash metal ever put to tape but it has a way of flying under the radar. Which is fine by me. I mean the song itself, this cover is just a perfect example of that. This makes that strikingly obvious if it hadn't occurred to one already. I've always said that if I was going to try to explain thrash metal or 80s Metallica to someone this would be the first song I'd play. The fact that it's a little off and antipop and weird in ways is part of that rather than a detractor. Probably this, Horsemen maybe...or my other "weird" favorites Phantom Lord or No Remorse and D.R.I. "Beneath the wheel" or something and that's pretty much all you need to know, really. The rest is just getting away from the core thrash sound after that. Which made for some pretty great music, but this is thrash. Also...the particular weirdness in the playing here speaks to me. Both from a hardcore punk Germs/Discharge noisy direction dissonant side of things _and_ a black metal European metal kinda direction... it's part of the thing I *really* like that doesn't quite have a name but defines my sensibilities in these kinda sounds. I like the songs that characterize that more than the songs that have character, as much as I very much *DO* love all those songs as well. (Your For whom the bell tolls and Creeping death and whiplash and jump in the fire seek and destroy type awesome songs, I mean)

No you're wrong actually, it's the same double bass as the original, but the mix in RTL is too low and you almost don't hear it. If you listen to some remastered versions, you can hear the double bass a lot better.
