"He just became an animal"
-- Lynne Schaber, Trainer at Shamu Stadium, SeaWorld Florida and Spotter Trainer when the orca Tilikum killed Dawn Brancheau. Interviewed by Orange County Sheriff's Office, February 24, 2010, 3:53 PM, shortly after Brancheau died.
Schaber was downstairs in the underwater viewing area that fateful day when Tilikum grabbed Dawn Brancheau and proceeded to ram and kill her in front of terrified guests. Shockingly, even though she had worked beside Tilikum for many years, Schaber was unaware of the details surrounding the other two human deaths previously associated with the 12,000 pound killer whale.

I'm sure this kind of activities will be forbidden in the future, and people will look back at how stupid we were, like we do about some insane things that were legal before. Kill whales doesn't have any natural enemies, they are nr 1 on the hierarki, they are not endangered. Well, unless you count us. If they do get endangered it would be because of us. The emphasize here should be on us making laws, rather than opening up for a future where we need to have them captive for preservation .

Pro-cap are either silent or they're going to actively defend SeaWorld. You're preaching to the wrong people. Therefore, that part of the comment -- whether correctly quoted or not -- still needs to go. It has no purpose. Speak to those who quietly watch these videos, but who remain on the fence. Another trainer has said all new trainers were given a "Tilly talk" & told never, ever get in the water with Tillikum, or you'll end up dead. Then she runs out of food & 'rewards' him by kneeling down, leaning over the him in the pool & scratching his tongue, and inside his mouth . WTF. Why was he even being used to perform, I understood they knew his history of killing a trainer & a guy who climbed in the tank, but they bought him as breeding stock anyway. She didn't drown either. He tore her arm off, scalped her & broke her ribs, legs etc. Then refused to drop her for a couple of hours. Wild Orca's have never, ever attacked a human in the wild. Putting a highly social animal that live in family 'pods' up & travels hundreds of miles a day alone in a 30ft pool is abuse. They headbutt the concrete til they bleed & stay motionless not swimming hour after hour (signs of emotional disturbance).

Yeah, or don't get into the water with a multi-ton aquatic predator. Somehow I don't think anyone would be as "outraged" if this exact sequence of events happened with a great white. This is natural selection in play. It's sad, but she got what was obviously coming and the people that day got what they paid for (because why else are you paying to watch terrestrial animals swim with aquatic predators?). And wild orcas have been involved in numerous non-fatal attacks, both in the wild and in captivity (as "Tilly" was a wild whale in captivity, not a domesticated orca).

Although I did still think that it was very abnormal, as in why would this large creature be performing with a human balancing on his nose. As an adult I see the terrible abuse these animals are put through. The conditions in which they are to live in that decrease there life span by over 75%!!! Sea World is to blame for the trainer death 100% keeping these beautiful creatures in captivity is unbelievably cruel. In the Wild they live free in a Pod, a family group and swim all over the Oceans. There is no excuse in 2019 to keep them in tiny tanks. Tilikum must have bee so distressed and unhappy to kill her. There have been problems after problems and theres so many wildlife documentries to see these animals wild theres now there no excuse for what you are doing. I hope the Justice System hauls you over the coals and charges Sea World with murder. I listend to one of your representives talking about them. So i went online and looked at every national geographic, blue planet, u tube etc etc.He didn’t know anything about it them he just repeated the same patter each time . knew more in one day than he described. I bet if i asked if any of you had taken time to go and see them in the wild the answer would be no because you are so arrogant. It is absolutely shameful and you should be ashamed. I’m guessing what is let of the Whales could not defend themselfves or feed themselves if you let them go so their lives are to be shut into tanks until they die, how miserable for them. Tilkum’s dorsal fin was completely dropped over to one side a clear indication that he was very stressed and very unhappy and it took a death of a trainer and you are still not listening. Tilkum should have lived another 20 years or so. If this had been another Animal for the purposes of education, it wouldn’t be allowed. Circusces have been stopped because then Lions, Tigers etc that killed trainers. Why have you been allowed to get away with such cruelty, money i guess. You can all be upset and sad he died, but you did that, it is crimninal. I’m just ashamed to call all of you a human being because what you have done and are sttill doing is abhorrent.

Poor tilikim just missed his mother his first memory of humans was them taking him away from his mom and killing three members of his pod three for three i guess... As far as him being posessive I'm sure that's a direct result of him being separated from his family thrown into a pit with other whales who abused him and always yearning to be loved and fear of abandonment hence the "keeping people" and "not letting them leave" once they entered his space.

I’ve seen killer whales many times off the California coast and around the farralon islands, I’ve seen them hunt, kill, and eat sea lions, I’ve had them steal salmon off my line, and I’ve also had them come right to the boat and roll their eyes out the water and just look at us, eye to eye maybe 2 feet away, maybe as amazed by the experience as we were.

I was told to kneel at the edge of the pool and hold my arms in a ring and the whale came up between my arms and kissed my face. After seeing this video I Realize how close to death I came in 1986. I also see how unbelievably cruel this show was. I would never support it again! These animals need to be freed!

Omg that is so unsafe 🫣😰 I can’t believe sea world felt comfortable sharing the whale’s space with visitors back then.. im glad there aren’t any reports of whales harming visitors. So many close calls 😰😰 there’s a clip of a whale going over the barrier-people say they do that when they hunt seals. Children started petting the whale, and a staff member ran towards them and told them to stop while getting in between the whale and the children…. There’s a lot of comments under that clip saying the whale could have easily snatched one of them 🫣

@@222lightatoms3 Why not? Maybe Dawn wasn't aware of Tilikum's past record with people. Maybe Sea World didn't do enough to protect their employees.....and if you watch Blackfish, you'll hear several different former employees state that they had very little information about the animals, especially Tilikum. Sea World could've prevented this death by not letting people near Tilikum for ANY reason, but they chose not to. They said as long as you don't go in the water with him, you'll be fine. Which is stupid when you think about it. Orcas can rear up and pull things into the water.....it's how they catch seals who try to stay on ice in the polar regions of the world. SW knew Orcas could pull people into the water and hurt them, and yet they did nothing to stop people from being at risk. Where were the barriers they could've built to keep the whale from pulling people in? Right. There were none at that time. He has every right to sue. That is completely bizarre, and she ran out of food which makes it even more insane. Makes me wonder about the extent to which she or other trainers were aware of his history-- I mean the orca had literally killed people two different times and youre in the water with him like he's a Disney character, she couldn't have known the full story. There is a wonderful documentary of a scientist "swimming with orcas" in New Zealand. She is cautious. They live there all year, got to know her and they like to hunt sting ray (She: I think for them it is like chocolate, they really put a lot of effort into hunting them). The orcas of course know her meanwhile and tolerate her. Then the documentary of the orcas in the Arctic (or Antarctic) going after seals. (usually I would side with the seals, but damn are the orcas smart). Beats the tricks of Sea World. We have to accept that it is not possible to be up and close with them. As for dolphins there are some places in the world where they voluntarily interact with humans. I would not trust a traumatized dolphin either (swimming with dolphins in basins for tourists). Plus that is also cruelty towards animals.

This comment may be from three years ago but 1) There's nothing wrong with her calling him an animal because that's what he is. 2) That doesn't matter, she still saw that Dawn winded up inside of the water which is something they are told not to ever do so she knew that Tillikum had pulled her in. 3) She knew that two others had been killed. I have seen Tilikum at Sea World back in 1988 (I think he was Shamu at the time). I´m from Sweden and I was on holiday in the U.S and we were recommended to visit Sea World (besides of Disneyworld). I remember his dorsal fin hanging and I felt sorry for them having to live in small pools. I would never ever visit again. I feel sorry for the orcas, dolphins and so on. It should be forbidden to keep animals locked up. Instead they should arrange tour boats to watch them in their own habitats. Or wait, noo.......then the greedy boat touring people would probably interfere with their natural lives, even get them stressed out in the wild as well. Because then, people arranging would probably organize numerous boat trips to get more profit and it would probably end up with boats disturbing their feeding hunt etc 24/7 and the other marine life. Last suggestion. Let some real wild life photographers and film makers observe them in the wild and the rest of the people can watch them on film, if they don´t have a natural connection to their surroundings.

As soon as he pulled her into the water, my question is what the hell were they doing? Watching Netflix ! Probably in such a state of shock and wanted nothing to do with interfering with that Whale, instead of doing something more to maybe distract his attention, by throwing in the safety net immediately over him, maybe tranquilizing the Whale, but it was probably too late by the time they could do anything. You can see that they are not 100% physically healthy, let alone, mentally healthy from being kept in a tiny pool as opposed to the big blue ocean. 😔 Just shameful and sickening watching them "doing tricks." 😖😖😖

Which ocean is blue? They all look dirty to me.

@@tessdurberville711 The ocean is not treated with chlorine, and more importantly, Killer Whales travel hundreds of miles in a straight line everyday. Without that they become unhealthy and the dorsal fin breaks down.

Perhaps he was frustrated , keeping to his end of the bargain 'performing ' and not getting enough of the reward ( fish) it was running really low and he sensed IT

Exactly what happened. Dawn asked Tilikum to swim around the perimeter of the pool waving his pectoral fin. Which he did. Dawn whistled for him to come back and saying you did it right. But Tilikum didn’t hear her whistle. So when he got back . She told him No reward you did it wrong. And that pissed him off. Enough to mutilate her. He is a big boy who was hungry. You never screw animals with food.

Imagine being taken out of your natural surroundings and being put in a pool only 30 feet wide or 60 feet wide and 20 feet deep so you can now perform for others being ripped from your family and everything that you know! He didn’t revert back to an animal he was an animal to begin with. The people who took him captive turned him into this. Too many times people have witnessed their behaviors In captivity that make them go crazy. And buy her own mouth she admitted no one gets in the water with him because of his aggression and two incidences before this. SeaWorld is responsible! And they should put every single wild thing they took back where it belongs!
