People say animals don't have feelings. Wtf.. Animals all have a nervous system. They feel touch, hear, see, taste and smell. They can put things together. They know what they like and don't like. They have feelings. They have thoughts. They have minds. It's time for people to stop treating them like pet rocks. After the show, you can go home, to the mall, to the park. They stay there after you visit. You try staying in your bedroom your whole lifetime.

FunFact: In the wild, there has not been a single case of an orca attacking a human. But in captivity, it happens every now and then. (RIP to the victims) By the way, the bent dorsal fin stands for stress and extreme discomfort. In the wild they for example only get one when they are stranded. These animals are the absolute top 1 predators in the ocean and flatten everything from great white sharks to blue whales to polar bears. Why? Because they are incredibly intelligent animals, which, by the way, have a greater emotional connection than we humans! That's why they never forget their family members who were snatched from them and locked up in small swimming pools. If it is so terrible for the survivors... how unbearable can it be for the captive animal that will never see its family again? Another "FunFact": Orcas that are kept in captivity usually come from different parts of the world. That means these animals can not even communicate, because orcas live in populations in certain parts of the world and learn (like we humans) different languages. An orca that lives off the coast of Japan could not communicate with an orca that comes from New Zealand. As unbelievable as it sounds, I am not telling nonsense. So and now I wish all who have read so far a nice day. You may rejoice. You have just learned more about orcas than you ever would at SeaWorld.

Sad the way he died, but can you imagine living around there and witnessing that all the time? How amazing, yet sad at the same time. The Taiji dolphin hunt going on now makes me sick. Ric O’berry deserves a medal for all the work he has done there, and as old as he is (I think 70’s, he just had a birthday) I don’t see him giving up soon, I think he’ll be there till he dies, and others will then continue to carry on his his legacy. I post on Instagram about the hunt and always tag the prime minister of Japan when I do. The locals say it’s a tradition and they don’t plan on stopping till they have to. They also claim that they do it for the meat to sell. I watched while an undercover person from either Sea Shepherd, or the Dolphin Project went in to see how much was actually being purchased. For one thing, Dolphin meat is not suitable to eat, as it contains twice the amount of mercury in it that is fit for human consumption. The others are sold to amusement parks for entertainment. The very first, and only time I went to a Dolphin show, was at Busch Gardens in St. Louis. My dad worked for Budweiser and got free tickets. While the rest of my family was having fun, and getting splashed, I could not get their sad eyes out of my head, and left there in tears. I was about 10 at the time. At least SeaWorld has stopped its breeding program, but Taiji needs to stop what they are doing, and hopefully, one day, the Dolphin Project, and Sea Shepherd will be able to do it. Thanks for caring 🐬🐬💙💙

I remember seeing Dawn perform in December 2009 and decided that I shouldn't go to the show again because these animals are held in captivity. When I saw the news about her death in 2010 it made me incredibly sad. Turns out Tilikum was not always held in captivity, he was taken from his pod when he was still a young orca (2 years old) I believe. So, unlike other orcas who were bred in captivity, Tilikum knew where his real home was and how he was taken away from it, thus probably causing him to react the way he did. Apparently, he trusted Dawn the most from the trainers and had a good relationship with her. And yet, he killed her. SeaWorld needs to be permanently shut down and establishments like it because this is what can happen. RIP Dawn Brancheau.

I saw that poor walrus face first in the rocks, I thought she was dead. But she was just there. I get you have to educate people about the sea life and the importance of our oceans and waters. But that isn’t the way. That place just makes you so depressed. Educate in the right way. Not through forcing animals to conduct a show. Screw seaworld.

Many of these whales were captured as babies, separated from their mothers and their pods. They communicate with echo location and each pod has its own specific sound. In a small circular swimming pool the echos make many of them deaf. The stress makes their dorsal fin flop and make their behaviour erratic. I must admit, when I went to sea world 25 years ago with my young kids , I enjoyed the show. My little girl who watched the show is a qualified veterinarian and once told me that the car park of sea world is made so big to get more viewers but the magnificent creatures who are the puppets in the show have a tiny place to live. Their life span is reduced by decades in captivity. This is the reality of capitalism, slavery and human cruelty not in the 18th or the 19th century, but in the 21st century and no one has the courage or dignity to stop it 😥

So here's a story. For Christmas I went to Florida and stayed at a Disney resort for 5 days. We didn't go to the parks. We already did a month ago. We just wanted to relax. One of those days though, we did go to SeaWorld. We were waiting for the Orca show and we could see them swimming and eating some fish behind the gates. I noticed that the the fins of the Orca were flipped over. I thought it was because they were heavy but I asked my mom anyways to see if I was right. Instead she told me it's because they're sad and its sigh that they're not free. We had a entire conversation on this until the show finally started. And I sat there, in the cold, watching the orcas do these tricks with their fins flopped over. And I had this feeling of guilt in me, we payed to see this, we payed for the orcas to stay here another day to do some tricks to satisfy us. I was really quiet that day.

That orca had killed people before SeaWorld even had him, and in all likelihood he probably would have done it again. The fact is that no captive set-up could ever be suitable for an orca whale. Not enough space, stimulation, and no familial pod. I think he was often injured by the other whales, too. There’s just no way SW possibly could have taken proper care of that whale and they knew that, but they wanted him for the money. The trainer herself did nothing wrong, but the environment that the whale was raised in for 20+ years caused him to lash out. Wild orcas have never hurt humans. His behavior was not like that of a wild orca, but plenty of captive orcas have shown similar aggression, and it is unbelievable to me that SeaWorld even still has orcas.

Tilikum killed Brancheau in February of 2010 and began performing again in March _2011._ As far as I can tell, he was _not_ kept for years in continuous isolation.

There has actually not been a single report of a fatal attack on humans by orcas in the wild. This is likely due to the fact that they use echolocation to "see" and therefore don't attack humans because they can tell we're not part of their diet (and orcas are apparently quite picky with what they eat). Compare that to the 4 human deaths caused by orcas in captivity. Ironically, keeping them in places like SeaWorld is exactly what makes them behave more aggressively and thus increases the likelihood of attack. It's just sad really :/

What Ms.Wilder didn't see in spite of her qualifications, and as only the Orca trainers there would know, was that near the end of the "Dine with Shamu" show Tilikum didn't respond to a command to stop after circling the tank, but instead circled around again before stopping. It's an extremely dangerous situation when a wild animal doesn't follow its commands, isn't rewarded when It's expecting to be and/or becomes confused by the trainer's actions. Many will remember the white tiger, Montecore, that grabbed Roy Horn by the neck and dragged him backstage nearly killing him during a Siegfried & Roy show at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. RIght before that happened, Mr. Horn used his arm to instruct the tiger to circle around instead of walking him in a circle like he had always done before. This caused confusion and all of a sudden Montecore stopped following any commands that Mr. Horn was giving him. When you are giving a wild animal commands, your superiority is paramount, and if that superiority dissolves then there is a high probability that the animal will attack, as is it's way, showing that it is the one who's then in command. When Tilikum did finally stop, he was given no reward, as there were no more fish left in the bucket. Also, the Sea World Orcas know when the amount of fish in the bucket gets low, for they can hear the 'slushing' sound the loose ice makes. This may or may not have contributed to Tilikum''s psyche that day. Being in close proximity with an Orca with your hair in a ponytail could have also been a factor and is prohibited because it's enticing for the whale to grab and play with, and during the attack on Ms. Brancheau, Tilikum grabbed her by the ponytail and ripped part of her scalp off. strength

Orca's fins do not collapse in the wild, unless they are very old or under some kind of exceptionally stressful event. Tilikum's dorsal fin had been collapsed for YEARS prior to this event. I'd been there a year before the trainer was killed. This was a whale who was NOT a content animal. It was a tragedy waiting to happen, unfortunately. They are highly intelligent creatures. No one has any business putting them into captivity this way. It's cruel. As for the Believe whales supposedly behaving abnormally, that is entirely possible even though they weren't the whales involved in the attack. Orcas are social creatures, the other whales in the park would be their "pod". It's entirely possible that they sensed something wasn't ok with Tilikum. The fact that they weren't the ones who attacked, that is the irrelevant part. If you know anything about Orcas, you know they can communicate and do communicate in various ways, and very often in ways that a human would never pick up on.

Both Dawn and Tilikum were NOT to blame for this, and how DARE SeaWorld attempt to blame Dawn for her own death. Dawn was doing what she was trained to do as a trainer, and Tilikum was doing what he was instinctively knew to do- probably only made worse by his frustration, isolation, etc. He was a wild animal, kept in captivity for years, mistreated and alone, and I'm not surprised. I do believe the witness is incredibly brave to state that "Those were completely different whales." I am sorry that she had to witness Dawn's death, and I hope she's found some sort of peace. She did a very brave thing, giving her statement, especially when SeaWorld tried so hard to control the narrative and blame both Dawn and Tilikum for her death. Yes, he killed her, but he's just as much a victim as she was, if not more.

The history of Tillicum aka Tilly. Was kidnapped from his pod as a baby.(70's) He has endured many, many many attacks from other killer whales in captivity. He has lived a terrible life from being taken from his pod, to forced onto drugs, for stress n anxiety. If you saw Dawn's autopsy report. It wasn't even play. He wanted to hurt her. It's sad bc she truly loved working with Tilly and other orcas. But bottom line Tilly snapped and should not be performing ever again. He should be in a mile pen in louder in the sea n be feed daily till he lives out the rest of his day's paid for by sea world. Damn them for damaging these whales true souls!!!

I believe that I saw Tilikum as "Shamu" at Sea World Orlando back in 1988. I would never attend a similar event again. I felt sorry for them swimming in small pools, still it was normalized to many people to watch these shows back then. Viewing it from an animal point of view, Tilikum was not a bad orca, he was the opposite, a large male. I feel sorry for both Dawn and all the orcas forced to live in captivity.

While I'm inclined to agree with your comment, Orcas are lead by the oldest female typically. Tilikum killed at least 3 people (including Dawn) and I believe is no longer living now, but Whales/Dolphins living in captivity in artificial pods is the most sickening idea to ever exist. I was 16 when this incident happened, and it still haunts me now. SeaWorld had the audacity to say that Dawn had "broken Tilikum protocols" sometime after this interview was conducted. Yeah, these animals have been in captivity for decades, but nobody stopped to think that just because we can do it doesn't mean we should do it when they started capturing them. Let's let that one sink in.

I used to love Seaworld; I went to Disney basically every other year from like age 1 to age 19 and we would visit Seaworld on almost every trip. I loved it when I was a young kid because I didn’t understand what it actually was...I remember as an early teen, like 14, 15ish, I had an uneasy feeling watching these trapped animals and by my last visit at age probably 18 years old, it actually disgusted me to think about going. I’ve been back to Orlando/Disney 4 or 5 times in the 15 years since that last visit to Seaworld and I have never gone again, nor have I had the desire to. Ill also never take my children. It is horrendous what these animals endure just so people like us can enjoy an overpriced, relatively lackluster “performance” in a giant pool. A rescue or sanctuary would serve these animals so much better and there could still be admission for viewing, I know people are interested. But the exploitation of these animals, let’s call it what it is, is just flat out wrong. RIP to this trainer and peace to her loved ones. ❤️
