I was watching something on PBS and fell asleep. I was slowly awakened to the building intro to this song and the strong bass driving it. I regained consciousness with a huge smile and my head nodding in time to the beat. Such an awesome tune!! I had never heard of these guys before. Thankful for my "awakening"!!

Welcome to the party. You've discovered a great, great band. If you haven't checked them out already, I'd recommend starting with the albums We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes, Transatlanticism, Plans, and Something About Airplanes. The album this song is on is Narrow Stairs, which is pretty good too but I wouldn't say it's essential listening outside of a few tracks.

OMGAWD. What a workout for the bass player! What a boss. He drives for the entire ride. And is also a master class by thee best drummer. You can hear more of his finesse on the studio/video version and if you pay attention to just his drums the detail is incredible and perfect and experienced. This is a signature performance by all and so well done by all. including the videography - obviously done by somebody who loved the challenge. This song is an artful and beautifully orchestrated peek into madness. Back to listening to it again and again.
@PBL1873 жыл бұрын
He’s an excellent bass player. He can do quite complex basslines as well, maybe not super technical or arpeggiated etc but definitely more than just a handful of notes (Summer Skin for example). He can also keep it real simple and rhythmic (This and You Are A Tourist are good examples of that)
@number1cabdriveriniowacity7363 жыл бұрын
Agreed
@ClebyHerris3 жыл бұрын
It’s definitely not super complex but it’s the duration and I’m guessing 1/20th of a second he has to hit every hit. Unlike rock where it doesn’t matter as much
This song is one of those I'll never forget the first time i heard it...I was sitting on my roof putting up Christmas Lights on my 2 story house...headphones in... on pandora probably...and this song comes bleeding in...and from the first loop i sat there as it took over me...i was instantly possessed. The lights had to wait 8 minutes and 25 seconds.

When this was first released there was a major backlash from fans of Death Cab and critics alike. It was viewed as a self-indulgent, aimless crawl from Gibbard. I knew then and I know now this track is something special. I think back then two things were at hand that impacted perception. 1. This song requires a lot of patience to enjoy fully. 2. This was a strong left turn from the band. What a fucking song, though. Not sure if this is the best Death Cab song but it certainly contains the most tension.

Open up, lean back and create space, then love has an opportunity to come in. If you pursue someone when they say no, you (figuratively) choke the life out of what could have been. I did it once years ago-the only time I was ever in love (and will never see that person again). I think this is why I find this song so damned disturbing!

Singer looks like a clone of a young John Fogerty. Nice bass n drum groove on this song. Lays down a great foundation. Keys and guitar just float gently above it. So nice when the bass player and drummer work in lock step. SO few bands understand this

This song kinda feels like the band listened to some 2000s Porcupine Tree and thought "so THIS is how we take ourselves to the next level". I bought a bass guitar last month just to learn how to play this song. I’d never so much as held another instrument in my life - except a vibraslap I also own. Imagine my surprise when I learned that this song has a “hammer on” and a “pull off”, neither of which I’d ever heard of or knew existed. Ok, I knew hammer ons existed because of EVH.
