If I could cover a GBV song I would, but I can't, so I have nothing but respect for the band, the man (Robert Pollard), and anyone with the musical sense to pay tribute any way they can. And this is a great tribute - definitely picks up the nuances of a difficult song. Thank you, Robert Pollard, for writing this music and to Ben Gibbard for his brilliant interpretation. Respect.

A beautiful cover. What a great pure voice and a perfect even-handed interpretation of a great song! It's funny, when people do covers of GBV tunes there is more than a sense of melancholy that isn't always present in the original. I guess that means this is a great song when the plot twists like that. I've said it before: Bob Pollard is some kind of national treasure...Now, ''speed-UP/ slow-DOWN...''

This song is a reworking of an earlier-recorded GBV song. Robert found himself in the middle of a divorce, and he rewrote the lyrics to meet how he was feeling at the time. Came out darker and truer. I can attest. Divorce is the pits. Until it isn't any more.

Gibbard does a great job with this song by making it his own & not trying to exactly copy GBV. (That's what really good artists do.) Ben's pitch is nearly perfect. His guitar playing clean, clear, crisp, and rhythmically spot on. It's an incredibly difficult song to play...I know...I've been trying to play it for 10 years. All the nay sayers in this thread...have a go at it...on an ACOUSTIC guitar. Then come back and tell us how you compare to Ben.
