You know, in literally every review Anthony has put out, the description has included the sentence "Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?" Also, every rating he's ever given has been preceded by "I'm feeling..." He's just telling us what he thinks. If he feels that TPAB was better than this, there is no objective standard to hold this opinion to an say "Well, he's wrong." He has never claimed to be some kind of unbiased gauge of quality; he's just a guy who loves music, and can very eloquently articulate his reasons for loving-and not loving--specific pieces of music. That's all any critic can claim to be, it's all they have to be, and it's all we should take them as. Getting angry because he gave an album a score slightly--SLIGHTLY--less than what you would have given it is no reason whatsoever to be angry with him.

"Up My Sleeves" might be my favorite Death Grips song. The lyrics came across to me as immature on the first few listens, but now I consider them MC Ride at one of his most vulnerable moments, and probably are the best Death Grips lyrics. The lines about his dead mother are shattering. What at first may seem like odd, disjointed change ups turned to an ugly yet beautiful arrangement of music. Then for the song to be followed by "Billy Not Really" and "Black Quarterback", two of Death Grips better tracks, proves NOTM needs more recognition. Haven't given Jenny Death enough time yet to really get a feel for it, but I think NOTM is one of Death Grips's best and could use some more love.

Is it just me, or was "Centuries of Damn" skipped on this video? That's actually my favorite track on the album, second to only "Why A Bitch Gotta Lie?" For me, the droning, almost croaking desperate riffs played on that guitar are the most memorable. Easily the most emotional track on this entire album, in my opinion. Loved the album, but that song is just cries with emotions in almost a sorrowful way, which contrasts from everything else, as everything else is just so shamelessly aggressive. It has such a desperate feel to it, like the end is near (which it kind of is since it's the second to last track). I would love to hear what you thought of it.

Great review Anthony. I have very similar feelings about this double album. Maybe I'm not very big fan of Death Grips (and completely not a fan of a hip-hop genre), but I must say that I don't really like their guitar sounds, the only tracks with this instrument that I enjoy are "On GP" and "I want it I need it" from Exmilitary. I love their electronic creations more than these made on classic instuments and this is why NLDW is my favorite album of the trio. Of course I can't imagine seeing them live without Zach drumming, but still prefer synthetic beats on the albums. Assuming I must say that I fell in love with "PSS PSS" and "Inanimate sensation" as well as "The Powers That B". "On GP" is also very special because of its difference, but the rest of song are just not catchy enough for me, I find some of them even too noisy (no I'm not 40 years old). If someone told me to give Jenny a grade it would be probably 7 or 7,5. Tomorrow they will announce tour dates so I hope I will have a chance to see them for the first time live :3. Greetings from Poland etc.

I'm so glad you reviewed this! Jenny Death was my favorite album of all time besides Bangarang by Skrillex. both are great dubstep artists though.

Coming back to this real late, maybe I'm saying something that's been said before, not gonna check to find out. It was played as a joke but I'm wondering if maybe Cal's assertion of "GINNY DEBT 10EN" might actually be Anthony's feelings of Jenny Death as a standalone, but wasn't going to give it an isolated score, and NOTM being weaker brings the overall score down to the overall 9.

Ah memories. I love the rush of euphoria I get when I listen to a new Death Grips album for the first time. It’s like the first time you snort bath salts in a Florida gas station bathroom.

The way they create this hype is so crazy, and they get away with being crazy because they are so inventive. Like the money store. "Idk why this slaps but it does"

Got to see these guys live in Tempe, Arizona a few weeks ago..... Holy shit. The way you described your live show experience is exactly how mine went. Mosh pit galore. Never sweated so much in my life. Jenny Death is definitely my favorite DG album. Thank you for reviewing it!

Whatever he gives it isn't going to affect my opinion but I'm just so sick of how hard he tries to maintain this image of being 'discerning' when he doesn't need to try at all. Like, I just wanna hear an honest review from him on this album, that's why I dig the needledrop cause it's just a man, a camera and a love for music even if I barely ever agree with him. It just comes off so contrived sometimes. His tweet about 10s not being candy just sounds like "I gave a ten out a week ago so I can't do it again". I mean he might not think TPTB is a 10, which is a-ok, but that tweet to me implies that even he did, he wouldn't give it a 10. He's already said that if two albums get the same score it doesn't mean they're comparable and that his system doesn't work equally for every artist after the backlash over Michael Cera's album so I don't see why it matters tbh. Still, could be bluffing & I could be totally misreading the tweet. Tbh I don't really care if he digs it or not just that he has some thoughtful and intelligent points that are honest.

Incessant bitching from newer viewers, so he tends to respond by clarifying how he rates albums. Not sure why he still humors it though. Been getting flack for giving MBDTF a 6/10 years ago

Really enjoyed this review. I like that you mentioned these albums could have been paired with one another to highlight to differences on each release. That is how I read it, and I think it has worked for DG very well. This double album almost feels like DG giving the listener an insight into the two massively different realms of music they draw their influence from, Bjork and cluttered electro being representative of one, the other being the washed out punk noise we hear on Jenny Death. This album is the best thing DG have done since The Money Store imo, and I think the inclusion of Death Grips 2.0 on the end of the album is suggesting that there will be more Death Grips music in the future, and it will sound like neither of the Powers That B records. Best tracks on here were Turned Off, Powers That B and On GP. Review the new Earl album Anthony, it's much more interesting than Doris was and has a sick Wiki feature on it!
