REEL STREETS OF MELBOURNE - EPISODE 2
I set out to find the locations of the film Death in Brunswick from 1990. It would seem not much has changed.
A reserved man in need of a job, Carl Fitzgerald (Sam Neill) finds employment at a Greek restaurant. Upon meeting waitress Sophie (Zoe Carides), Carl begins dating the attractive woman. Though it seems things are improving for Carl, an unexpected situation leads to the death of Mustafa (Nick Lathouris), a shady coworker, and Carl must figure out how to cover up the incident. Unsure of what to do, Carl enlists the help of his buddy, Dave (John Clarke), to get rid of Mustafa's corpse.

My family's shop, Anderson's Hardware, is opposite the Progress Picture Theatre where Sam stands looking across the road. My mum's signature is by his head on the window. Mum shut the shop once a year for our family holiday and it was closed the day they filmed. I missed meeting one of my favourite actors. We had the shop for 50 years. It is now townhouses.

Some memories there for me. At the time of filming my Dad was the Foreman in charge of the Brighton General Cemetery. I use to spend most my school holidays there as a kid. I remember when the Death in Brunswick film crew were on set at the cemetery. The prop hole they dug was reinforced on the sides with wood covered by dirt. This was so the actors could safely be in the hole during filming. I was 10 at the time, but could still walk to the spot today where the filming took place 😁 I enjoy your little videos. 👍

We were family friends with the Mum and the Son of Mustafa in the movie. Me and the son use to play monopoly as kids. And also the Progress Cinema they visit was a 5 minute walk from my old family's home on Reynard Street. I even went to see Independence Day back in 1995 there, It was really small inside for maybe about 100 people at the most.

After Karl and Sophie's afternoon delight, they're talking outside flats in Talbot Street, Brunswick, where I lived at the time. Couldn't get to my house because they were filming. Karl then walks off and challenges kids ripping a tree out the ground, a few doors from my house, in front of De Fazio Tiles, A few nights later, I was walking down Sydney Rd, and there was Sam, as they filmed the Bombay Rock bombing.

@@PaulHagl yeah it's numbers 15, 17 and 19 in the film. No 19 has been renovated significantly since 1990. What gives it away is the hedge fence outside number 15 (since gone) and an MMBW post near number 19. Fun fact for the day - number 22 underwent a significant renovation in the late 90s. Re your musings about whether or not people know their street/house was in a film - yes and no. Depends on their age. Don't get me wrong I can see it's tricky doing this sort of thing, and I do appreciate your efforts.

Probably owned by a Greek given the colour. Brunswick, VIC is home to an enormous amount of Greeks. The heavily fortified doors were likely to be the garage doors. I lived in a student hovel in Brunswick a couple of years before the film was shot and the proto-hipsters had already started moving in and doing up the houses.
