The anime does a good job of keeping you invested in this story. If you think about it, a large majority of the episodes is just people talking and thinking in their head with very little actual action. This is why Death Note works as an anime, there's no way you can translate people just thinking in their head most of the time, to live action. The anime keeps your attention by being over the top dramatic with its cinematic presentation which you can't achieve in the restrictions of real life. It all comes down to good directing.

No one mentions this but while L was watching light on the camera, the pop star hideki ryuga popped up on tv for a few mins and I think that's where L got the name Idea
