@Dos Cavazos Especially now hearing your discussion of the finale, I really think the resolution of the two Japanese Live Action Films of Death Note (which have been dubbed with the Anime's Voice Cast, so no loss on that front) might be somewhat more satisfying to you. I've always wanted to see a Reaction Channel watch them, but considering what you've planned for the Netflix adaptation (and my lack of funds) I do wholeheartedly recommend the two of them in general - even if its just some time from now on a whim. Thank you for your excellent content.

In the manga Light's death is different than the anime. Light dies way more pathetically and defeated: - After he's shot down by Matsuda he begs Mikami to kill the others, but Mikami tells him how he is supposed to kill them with a fake notebook. Mikami realizes Light isn't a God. -Lights yells for Takada but they tell him she's dead. Light calls for Misa but she was taken away and isn't there. - As a last resort he begs Ryuk to kill everyone, but even Ryuk tells him that he should know better than to ask for his help and writes Light's name in his DN. -Light begs for Ryuk to reverse writing his name, and Light says "I don't want to die" over and over again until he dies.

Light has always been like that, remember how he went crazy when killing fake L, or when he thought he would have to physically fight Naomi, and when he almost lost it for not turning off his phone. Mikami was not trying to distract people, he just saw god wimp and cry pathetically on the floor. Having Light win would make him a god, the point of the series is that at the end it doesn't matter what you do, you are still just human, this is why Light was shocked when Rem said she would take L's life like it was nothing. Light put a lot of trust on Misa who he thought was stupid, theres no surprise he trusted Mikami. Light's Mask was Kira and when the mask fell off he was just Light Yagami, The better the mask the more succesful you will get, but als othe loneliest you will feel, this is why Light asks for Misa or Takada.

"Is just that easy?" That's the whole point, we get so used to see Light using the notebook that we forget how easy is to kill in this world. Yes, the pacing in the second half is a little rushed. And yes, since L died, we saw Light getting too cocky and without any competition, eventually he got sloppy. The show did tell us at the second episode, at least Ryuk says it, "No human who uses the notebook can go either to heaven or hell; and when the time comes I'm the one who will write your name in my notebook". Even if in this world there's no heaven or hell, is kinda poetic that Light died in the middle of the stairs. And yes, Misa killed herself on a Valentine's day, after finding out Light was killed. The world never got to know Light was Kira, the SPK told the press that Light was killed by Kira. Phew, what a ride, it was fun guys. Another anime crossed on your checklist. Thank you for all your effort at doing this videos Dos Cavazos. You are the best.

"The pacingg in the second half is a little rushed" *crys in manga* They left out some pretty great stuff, its honestly my favoirt part. As for Light being slobby I am not sure if thats something bad, because I thought it worked really well. After Ls death, he thought he became god, perfect, unbeatable. So he gave the notebook away to someone, just because he liked kira, thinking he and his army are above mortals. However in the end, Light is just as human as everyone else. He didnt lose because he was dumb, he lost because he was cocky. Thought I add this.

The problem was Light was stripped of everything that gave him the power to act as a God. When all that power was stripped and his realization that he was outplayed by both M and N, Light's true colors were revealed. His own ego couldn't handle defeat through Near and Mello. He continuously underestimated both Near and Mello simply because they weren't L. Light was a victim of his own ego and God complex, and when he was finally brought back to ground level he couldn't cope with defeat. It was not a personality shift. Light being exposed just showed who he truly was without all that power.

This time, he revealed himself too quickly, too soon because his ego got too big. "I win," he said. When he realized he fucked up, his internal monologues could not longer be kept in. You're not alone in being conflicted, but after seeing/reading it a few times, I'm of the impression that Light isn't just rusty. When he defeated L, he beat his strongest opponent. You see several times that he mocks Near and Mello in his head, saying they're nothing compared to L. He's not just rusty, he's arrogant; before he defeats L, he is hyper-cautious and creates contingencies for his contingencies. After defeating L, he has no respect for anyone else opposing him, he acts boldly, takes chances, because if L couldn't catch him, how could anyone else?

Mello is such an underrated character and honestly deserves more recognition. In the beginning of the second half he was just a rebellious teen drawn by his emotions to defeat Near and avenge L’s death. Which is probably why he joined criminal organizations etc. After having his hideout destroyed and his real name discovered, It was obvious he felt cornered and had to take action by teaming up with Near. Mello kidnaping Takada was probably one of the smartest moves in the whole show that ultimately led to Lights downfall.

I was hoping to hear a discussion about the importance of Mello's move since Near would have died: Halle Linder the blonde in the SPK leaked every detail from Near's Kira case to Mello because she believed that only by having them work together can they defeat Light. Mello was informed of the plan Near had to take down Light. Early on Mello always knew that there were 2 DN's in existence (Ep 27) but whether he knew one of them was fake is left ambiguous. So, Mello decided he had to create a situation where he would have to force the location of the 2nd notebook. By Kidnapping Takeda, Mello took a gamble and it actually worked since Mikami revealed the location of the real DN to kill Takeda. Although Mello died, his sacrifice was a message to Near not to rule out the existence of only one notebook, Mello too prideful but still wanting to be of help basically 1 upped Near, by inadvertently exposing Near's flaw in his plan. Near admitted he never considered the possibility of another without Mello's move. Mello proved to Near that without his initiative, Near would have lost.

The biggest problem of being intelligent and having an high iq is that unless you are humble you will just see the world as trash . Light justifies this statement and so does L and Near . They both didn't have a sense of justice and it was just their hobby or passion to catch interesting criminals . Manga made it clear they were no saviors of justice . It was the circumstances and the favoritism of authors that led us to think that light is evil and L is Justice . But there are other anime characters who are humble yet intelligent . In the end I was on Matsuda's side so I didn't care who died or lived .

To be fair, the manga does a much better job of fleshing out Mello and Near. They packed dozens of chapters of the manga into just 11 episodes (26-37). Also, Near and Mello are meant to be the two sides to L's way of thinking. Near is L sitting behind a computer screen looking at everything from a distance, coldly calculating his move without taking any risks. Mello is L apprehending Misa Amane and revealing himself to Light in person, knowing full-well Light is probably Kira. Also, Light's calm and collected nature is completely false. Those instances where you see him laugh maniacally, or glare menacingly at his victims as they die, is the real Light. So his mental break and pathetic groveling at the end is fitting because the calm Light is a fake face he puts on for other people. Light is the protagonist of Death Note, but he's also the villain. At the end of the day he's a serial killer, like Near said. He didn't just kill criminals he killed innocent people to hide his identity, and used Misa and Takada. He did a lot of terrible things without any consequence or retribution throughout the entire show. In the end, justice was served.

I LOVED THE SAD ENDING. It shows that we're only humans in the end. That we can't predict everything. That we can't be Gods (which was a surprise for Light Yagami, since it was the first time things weren't going according to a plan.) That's why you saw him upset and out-of his character - he "lost his papers". He was put into situation he didn't know how to get out from, he felt DESPERATE. He had a rush of strong emotions he didn't show/have before!!! Which felt really realistic from my point of view... And that's why I loved it. Because humans are not only about having a mask or a facade... We feel something, too. Light felt what he didn't feel for others when he was killing them. However, it was too late for his mercy at this point... I bet he valued his life over his status, but he wasn't cognizant of the dangers he was going through!! He thought he had the lucky, winning card (but in the real world things aren't like this). - - - This anime is also representative of a warning to not fool yourself into the wrong path. I do recall reading that Misa did take her life in the end. I did enjoy the first part but it doesn't diminish the latter half. As for the end, Light has never lost, this was his first experience with defeat. And that end with his sinister side finally showing, the real Light revealed to all of them. Also there was some mention that there is not heaven or hell in this world, so when Ryuk said that a user of the notebook can go to neither, he was technically telling the truth to Light. If you want something sort of similar, look to an anime called Monster by Naoki Urasawa. No supernatural elements in that anime but it has the same sort of vibe.

I'm pretty convinced that Near used the Death Note at the end. He's the type of character who wouldn't leave anything up to chance, and there's some pretty compelling (circumstantial) evidence that suggests he used it to ensure his victory. Imagine if Near wrote the following: 1. Teru Mikami comes to the warehouse as instructed and writes down the name of everyone but Kira in the fake notebook. After it is revealed that Kira is not a God, Teru Mikami kills himself. 2. Misa Amane is released from the custody of the Kira task force and boards a train leading her away from the (warehouse). She then commits suicide by jumping from a building. This gives Near a 100% guarantee that both Misa and Mikami will not make any unexpected moves and kill him in the end. This would give him the confidence needed to meet Light face to face.

I find it almost impossible that Near used the Death Note, I personally think that Light could have written Miakami’s name on the DN believing he would win, to tie up loose ends, although I believe that if this were true he would have directly killed him from a heart attack. As for Misa, if I remember correctly, the author of the manga confirmed that she committed suicide 1 year later, she could not bear to live without Light, I imagine that in the anime the same thing happened.

Conceptually, Light had a point about statistics and the impact of justice he had on the world. If he had simply been a "crazy serial killer", he'd have and could have killed at random without regard for who did what. Ultimately he still had a code and systematic criteria for who had to die. What's more multiple parties in law enforcement play judge, jury and executioner. In a way, even if you don't want to see it that way, Light reflected similar principles as the law - except he was more a dictator or monarch in the shadows rather than an agreement of bodies.

@@winterwonders3 I haven't forgotten that. I'm a strong believer of utilitarianism and also that the ends justify the means. In the eyes of the law, if you witness a crime or you were present for it, yet make no reports, you can be charged for being complicit. If there were people who wanted to take down the government yet did not commit any crimes per se, they would be charged, exiled or even executed. How is that any different? The hard truth is the winners write history and justice. Plus, Light had more of an impact on the world than any government could ever hope to achieve. More people are saved from criminals or potential evil-doers. Yes, Light is flawed, but even more flawed are our current justice systems. Letting more people get killed because of bureaucracy, ego or negligence is worse than what Light has done. What is and isn't justice? None of us get to define what justice is before the fact. Discussions like this just proves he's one of the few who had the intellect, resilience and focus to pull off what he did. Our hesitation, guilt and reluctance to do so out of our immediate view of conventional morals prove that as well. When all's said and done, Light killed people because he adhered to a strict code and vision for his sense of justice. That isn't by any definition crazy any more than it is justified - in his thought process of course.

@@bernardlovesadventures6649 1) "I'm a strong believer of utilitarianism and also that the ends justify the means" What is practical with this sentence is that it can be used to justify anything... like genocide and killing innocents in Light's case. Also, believing in something is good, but it's just useless when you want to prove something. 2) "Yes, Light is flawed, but even more flawed are our current justice systems" Of course, it is well known that a genocide will always be preferable to the judicial systems that have been put in place, right ? 3) "Letting more people get killed because of bureaucracy, ego or negligence is worse than what Light has done." Arguments ? Proofs ? Nothing. You just impose your criteria in an arbitrary way to prove yourself right. Besides, you're in a double standard. Letting people die *indirectly* in order to respect the law, out of negligence or out of ego (why out of ego anyway ?), it's scandalous, but killing *potentially* people to satisfy your ego, that's nothing to complain about. You're not coherent. 4) "Discussions like this just proves he's one of the few who had the intellect, resilience and focus to pull off what he did" Except that his objective was not to reduce crime but to reign over a pure world according to his standards. So he failed. And even if he had succeeded in achieving his goal, what is the relevance of this remark ? 5) "Our hesitation, guilt and reluctance to do so out of our immediate view of conventional morals prove that as well" You forgot to demonstrate how. The manga was even more incredible at the ending, showing that as a last resort, Light called upon Ryuk to write down their names to save him. Ryuk responded by saying he would write it down, but then showed his notebook to light, who froze completely when seeing that Ryuk wrote down Light's name instead. Stating that it was basically game over, and it would no longer be fun to watch him if he was just going to spend the rest of his life in prison. Fucking brutal to just do that right in his face, rather then like in the anime. Also fun fact: in the manga its stated that the whole "can't go to heaven or hell" rule is actually a lie Ryuk wrote in himself just to mess with people. Fact is, there is no heaven or hell to begin with, so it does not make any difference wherever you use the notebook or not, the result is just the same, if you die, you cease to exist.

Remember that Near/Mello had full knowledge of the Death Note's existence since their arc began. L barely got to live 1-2 episodes after his discovery of its existence. So I don't really think it's fair of Near to say that together he and Mello can "surpass L". L was going to test the Notebook to see if the "13 day rule" was real. L died because Light manipulated a Shinigami (Rem) to kill L. He didn't have that leverage this time around with Near/Mello. A lot of the dynamics had changed between when L was in charge of the investigation against Kira, and when Near (and Mello) was. L knew Light was Kira but was only unable to have solid concrete evidence...and he would have if the writers didn't kill him off. Also fun fact: The writers confirmed that Naomi Misera (Former FBI agent/Ray Penber's fiance) was literally too smart for the show and had to kill her off, or she'd deduce and reveal that Light was Kira and DEATH NOTE would've had an even sooner ending. :)

Idk why y’all are so surprised or caught off guard, especially about how light broke down lol. He’s literally been the exact same character since he tested the notebook. He’s always been a child who, while brilliant and maybe started out with slightly decent intentions, is also incredibly immature and short fused/sighted and megalomaniacal. You watched the whole anime, you should’ve known better by now than to expect a sitcom style happily ever after ending lol

Disagree he wasn’t megalomaniacal at the start and don’t downplay his intentions as “decent”,fairness would be the ultimate sign of a good person my point is yes he didn’t like to lose but had it not been for the deathnote it would of never been to that extent, I know this myself because I also hate to lose lol and people can call that “immature” but I still consider myself a fair person.

@@EIIlast2791 No, he was never interested in fairness and justice. If he had, he wouldn't have killed innocent people like Naomi Misora or Ray Penber right from the beginning of the anime, and he wouldn't have attempted to assassinate the best investigator on the world. If he started killing, it was by his own admission because he wanted to become a god.

I think the idea is that on the inside, Light has always been that person since he found the notebook. Think about his actions after killing Lind L. Taylor. Think about the end of the episode when L shows up at graduation and reveals himself to Light. He laughs maniacally. Think about the big change in behavior when Light regained his memories after reuniting with the notebook. The show has been giving us glimpses this entire time. When he lost against Near, he was unable to keep up the facade and displayed his true nature and emotions all at once. He revealed everything that's been going on in his mind since he got the notebook. To him, his arguments and demeanor made perfect sense, but to everyone else, he seemed like a madman. He revealed himself not only to the characters in the warehouse but to the audience as well.

I disagree. They had a lot of valid reasons for disliking the ending from watching the show. They got these reasons from their own viewing. These happen to match up with what many people have said because those things did happen. Like Light acting stupid, Near finding out everything instantly, losing to random bullshit, etc. These are all valid criticisms anyone would have from watching or reading Death Note.

Sacrifice bad and by unfortunate turn also mediocre people as well... for the sake of normal citizens, good people, people whom otherwise would've been hurt by the people who ignore rules of the society, ensuring fairness. He the one who stopped wars, he who stopped crime as humanly possible, he who saved so many and ensured peace and fairness, is destined to be hated, for the simple perception of "death has to be evil, because i dont want to die, thus everybody who takes a live has to be evil as a consequence" Honestly, i love his path, the religious iconography following him, but i do indeed hate how pompous and cold he was.

One thing to keep in mind is that in every other situation in the series where Light was on the verge of getting found out, he had an out. He was only up against accusations. In the end was the first time that he was up against actual undeniable proof. There was no out. It was the first and only time in the series that he was truly cornered, which is why his true colors were shown through. It was established through things like the tennis match, him being top of his class, him beating L, that Light pretty was the best at all of his endeavors and it’s implied that he pretty much never lost in anything so him losing to near was his first real loss, and the stakes were extremely high. His reaction makes a lot of sense when you consider all of these factors

I just watched 37 of your videos Lol It was fun thank you 😂 If you feel weird after watched the finale imagine how we the manga reader feel. In the anime they still kinda honoring light's dead by made it dramatic by making him run and died peacfully in the stair, and meet L's ghost. In the manga after matsuda shoot him light crawl to ryuk and begging him to kill N but ryuk refuse and write light's instead. Knowing that light started to cry begging ryuk to undo it and keep saying that he doesn't want to die. Even matsuda and the other police force member start to pitty him. After 40 second he's just died of heart attack infront of everyone with eyes open and blank ekspression. And the manga ended with one page of Light's dead face...

I feel like people saying that forget Mello's contribution to the whole plan. It's not that Near alone was victorious where L failed, it's Near and Mello, together, who did it! Near himself aknowledge that, alone, he couldn't have succeeded here, and fully aknowledge (with a tone that make it seems like Mello's contribution was even more important than his) Mello's importance in the trap they've set up for Light. Just saying, let's aknowledge Mello's sacrifice in taking down Light, maybe?

I agree with you guys completely, the ending is hard to watch. Seeing Light completely revealed and vulnerable after living for years as the most deadly and cunning person alive. Even so, Light was a megalomanical mass-murderer bent on world domination, and like all of history's greatest villains, Light cast himself as the good guy. From his first day with the DN, he was on the right side of history and on a mission to make the world a better place. Anyone who got in his way or threatened that mission was eliminated with glee. How dare they oppose him? The greatest good in all the world... God himself. Light needed to die, and what's more, he richly deserved it.
