"For example, how about war? Flying the flag of justice risking our lives, when in truth, it's nothing but mass murder" Ah yes, committing mass murder in the name of justice is horrific and immoral. It's a good thing you don't do anything like that, Light Yagami.

He does nothing like that because war mainly targets innocents, which is the exact opposite of what Light wants - in fact, protecting innocents from criminals is one of his main objectives. Seriously, after the 5-year timeskip all forms of warfare have been eliminated, so... It should be very easy to see that war is as distant from Light's ideals and actions as night and day are.

@@ullabatulla8459 yet he killed an innocent person by accident when he was trying to kill L (whom he was also trying to kill for his benefit, not for committing a crime) and didn't feel like he should be held accountable. And sacrificed Misa because he didn't think he should have to sacrifice his longevity to get what he wanted. Yeah, Light was aaaaalllllll about focusing only on the guilty.

This might be controversial, but I actually think I find the English version more fitting from a musical perspective. Even though the Japanese one stays closer to Light's vision and beliefs.

Personally, I prefer this version. I was absolutely enthralled by Jeremy's performance but the guy playing Light here has such a rich voice with amazing enunciation that bewitched me.

Musically i prefer the english version but the meaning of the one is better. It’s way more nuanced.

The Japanese version is to fit japoneses problems about justice while the English version speaks more to americans this might be pointless to you but to japoneses people it might make sense

If anything, it's too naunced. I can't see this Light becoming Kira, his understanding of justice is too complex. You'd need a few more steps along the way

@@AbsolXGuardian If anything, I would argue that I can see this Light becoming Kira more, honestly. Even in the anime, Light had an incredibly nuanced understanding of his idea of justice and a vivid vision of an ideal society, but as we can see both in this song, and in the anime, the justice brought about by the law did not fit his idea of what justice should be. It’s full of loopholes and people aren’t punished as he thinks they should be. This causes him to broaden his vision of what his idea of justice is and think about what he could do to achieve this idealised society that he sees in his mind, as he was asked to in this song, and the result was a very twisted version of “justice” brought about so that his ideals can be achieved. In this song, he was asked to find his own sense of justice because nothing is black and white, and to work within the law to meet that, but Light is an idealist first and foremost. His ideal society could not be met inside the law, so his ultimate decision was that his idea of justice was more important than the law. I think that this song reflects that very, very well, with Light constantly questioning the law and its loopholes and ultimately deciding that the law and listening to the leaders in our society is not an option for him. It doesn’t meet his ideal. His problem was never not having a nuanced understanding of the legal idea of justice, or even his own idea of it. It was having too much of an understanding to the point where he could dissect it and be dissatisfied with what he saw.

I love how Light’s personality, as well as his classmates’ lines, in both versions fit how the justice system works in America and Japan and how Light would react in those respective countries. In the English version, Light sounds like a genuinely well meaning guy who initially claimed he was using the Death Note to help other people, but eventually got too confident and revealed his true colors when he went way too far, and his classmates completely agree with him as the American justice system is genuinely supposed to help the innocent but keeps getting skewed. In the Japanese version, they’re all resigned to how Japan’s justice system is biased towards the guilty, so Light is more jaded and doesn’t really believe in getting true justice like he claims, which is reflected in how his true motivation for using the Death Note in the first place keeps slipping out several times throughout the song and none of his classmates really notice.

This got me thinking about how the lyrics would change to reflect different issues in different cultures according to the language. I think a Russian Light would be fed up with the system wanting to enact positive change with the professor trying to justify inequalities as just the way things are, maybe going as far as to argue that such things are necessary to maintain order in a chaotic world. Meanwhile, I think a Sudanese Arabic version would focus on how civilians are often caught in the crossfire between warring parties and how there isn't always a clear group to side with.

I feel like the english version makes Light more sympathetic, at least for me as a western listener, as he expresses much more his issues with the justice system which leads to him taking the law into his own hands.

The Japanese and the English are both good in my opinion light is talking about that true justice is equality to all just because you have money in what ever country you live in doesn’t make free from the law if we break the law we go to jail to why not the ritch Is what I think light is talking about in both languages

I like that Light starts out correctly critiquing justice as a mere social norm, and then his classmates tell him that "real" justice is able to be found by a proper leader. Then Light gets the Death Note and considers himself the proper leader, throwing their stupid ideas in their faces lol
