#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.
Rules:
1: No discrimination or hate speech.
2: No affiliation links that do not belong to nerdSlayer.
3: No political/religious talk or debate .

I remember a letter in one of the old gaming magazines where a reader submitted a scathing opinion on the game. Said it should be telling players to clean their room as "simulated field day" or even watch a screen for 8 hours as "simulated guard duty" to make it more akin to actual army experience. At the end was signed "name and rank withheld" and then an editors note that the reader did submit full name, rank, and unit but they didn't want the reader to possibly get in trouble with their command so they didn't print it.

I have fond memories of this franchise, I was a poor kid with a terrible computer. My fps skills were abysmal so this was one of the few games I could play back then because it was free. I would always score terribly and just get rolled most of the time. But I vividly remember one match on the map where its a small town with sewers running below it that I somehow pulled off a miracle match holding off the entire enemy team and turning around a stomp against us to win singlehandedly. Suddenly chat was blowing up and everyone was asking if I was a pro and if I would join their clan. It felt incredible but I knew I would get found out so I just left the server right away. Still it was a really memorable gaming moment thanks to this game. Also the map where you have to cross the snowy bridge was awesome.

The main idea of the Boot Camp segments of the early game was to get you comfortable with the idea of joining - you're going to get yelled at in boot camp, but it's part of being taught essential skills, it's nothing personal. It made me more comfortable with joining my own nation's army, and it was actually pretty close to as advertised. I loved the "Offline Training Qualification" mechanic - everyone wants to be a sniper or to have the grenade launcher, and this mechanic ensures that you have to prove you know what you're doing first. The medic training was most interesting: When a teammate is downed, you're given a list of his symptons, and have to apply the correct treatments. Hope you studied!

America's Army 2 was the best. I will never forget sitting through powerpoint presentations and quizes in a virtual classroom to become a Medic in MP. Almost ranking up after dozens of hours only for 1 team kill to knock me back down a rank and lose all my progress. Not to mention immediately being disconnected from the server and thrown in a virtual jail cell. This game probably played a large role in building my patience and developing my masochism

So i was at a Slayer farewell concert (May 8th, 2019) with a friend of mine. She got my attention and pointed out people doing CPR on a guy. I'm a paramedic so I went over there to take over until EMS arrived. I'm doing high quality compressions (had my annual CPR check off a few days before the concert so my rhythm was dead on), and I'm thinking that the guy only has about 6 minutes until he starts to be at high risk for brain damage. He and I both had huge beards at the time, and I thought if I did mouth to mouth our beards would lock up (like high schoolers with braces in the movies when kissing), and there was a good chance we'd bump teeth. Then I remembered taking the medic course in America's Army years and years ago. It taught mouth to nose respirations. So I put my mouth over his nose and held his mouth shut with my hand and did rescue breaths. Did this until the concert staff brought an AED. Hooked the guy up and shocked him. Every check after that was no shock advised. A long time later (10-15min) EMS showed up, turns out they where about 50 yards away in a room at the event. The excuse I was given was that they where on the wrong radio channel, and couldn't communicate with staff about the CPR. Eventually they took him to the ambulance and the guy had a good pulse and was breathing on his own (still unconscious though). Did the CPR on a Wednesday, guy was discharged home with no brain injury, no broken ribs, no kind of deficits noted. I credit a lot of his survival to the mouth to nose respirations I learned from America's Army.

My roommate discovered this game in college back in late 2002 or early 2003. What is important to stress about this game is the context of the time - a free and also enjoyable game was basically nonexistent. You had Doom, some novelty Doom-engine cereal box CD games, and that was about it. You PAID for games up front, that's how it worked. So the fact that he was able to just download and play the decent-looking and interesting multiplayer shooter game for free was a novelty in and of itself. The only things I remember about it, as someone coming from CS 1.5/1.6 and Halo 1, was (1) that it didn't seem as arcadey-fun as I was used to and (2) that my roommate spent wayyyy too much time memorizing exactly where to run and then exactly what pixel in the sky to aim at and lob a grenade on match start to get cheesy kills every time as the enemy team ran out. This was on some map with a long bridge in the middle as a point of first contact after rollout from both sides. For the 3 people who remember the bridge map and America's Army, this will probably activate some neurons.

I loved this game. I remember playing with my dad. He was a 20year vet. I did the bootcamp part and remembered how much he laughed when I fired my rifle before being instructed to. He thought it was neat how they made that part realistic, but he told me you would have gotten more than a slap on the wrist for doing that. This game was really neat. You want to play as a sniper? Well you better have gone to sniper school, but to do that you better have shot expert in marksman training. Want to play the SF matches? Well you got to complete ranger school first, but you can't do that until you've gotten your jump wings. The scenarios for the matches were also cool. Like escorting a seriously wounded VIP (that you could play as) or shutting down a highly guarded pipeline control center.

It was too honest to be a propaganda tool, the other side was 'Opfor', not 'Terrorists'. Other than a few logos, and American accent, it could have been any NATO member. Modern microtransactions and Gacha are far more manipulative. A truly modern version would have you scanning QR codes at recruitment offices to get bonus skins, emblems and prestige level might get you physical items or sign up bonus. It would unironically, 'Would you like to know more?'. Sponsoring E-Sports and DoD equipment support for Transformers it far closer to propaganda. Insurgency, especially 2 was far closer to Army than AA could ever hope to be. Calling an A-10 gun run is peak recruitment.

AA2 was the first FPS I played a lot of. As we had a Mac it was one of the only fps games I could play for free. It was a lot of fun, and having to do all the training first, it felt like I was actually learning some very basic military knowledge. It had a good variety of maps, snow, desert, urban, night time air landing etc. I liked how whatever side you played on you were always the Americans, with enemy team just reskinned as insurgents, which helped with team balance as well. At the beginning of the round you could only select the special forces role if you had completed the training, otherwise you had to play as the local militia with AK type weapons. I think there was also no respawning in a round, so you would have to sit and spectate your team mates, lending to the idea of playing carefully and slowly. Fond memories.

I played this game for thousands of hours throughout my pre-teen and teen years. America's Army 2.3-2.85 was an absolute blast. The gameplay loop is based around the seek and destroy game type, each round being 10 minutes. When you die, you're dead until the remainder of the round, either the objectives accomplished or everyone dead. Most rounds were quite long, lasting 5-8 minutes. This taught you a lot on its own. The community in this game was incredibly tight knit and everyone knew each other and all of the top clans. It was like my home, really. Shouts out to Instruments of God, one of the most elite and badass clans I can recall of. The semi pro and pro competitive scene was really quite a huge aspect of this game. There was an insanely deep learning curve to the movement and gunplay, if you really wanted to be the best. It required such a high level of finesse. It was perfect in its simplicity, which is a problem all modern FPS games suffer from now, bloated content in terms of guns attachment and accessories and powerups and killstreaks and perks..... not enough developing the perfect gameplay loop & gunplay. Really, AAO is most comparable to what CounterStrike offers in terms of the gameplay loop being the creme-de-la-creme. It's still in my opinion, unmatched in terms of gunplay. Never been touched. You never had any kind of desync in this game. It was flawless and I miss it deeply. There still exists a very small community that plays it, but it isn't what it used to be. RIP AAO. Shouts out to all my former clanmates, FTF - Brit Army - Rupture - and last but not least Protect and Serve who hosted an extremely popular 24/7 Pipeline server.

@nathanhale4430as a former user of Fum, it’s mostly an overpriced Essential Oils inhaler. Which is already a problem worth avoiding because the oils aren’t entirely healthy to inhale either (the instructions specifically ask that you pull as would a cigarette but directly exhale thru the nose, it’s not meant to go to the lungs) So there’s a lot of mental fortitude you as the consumer need to change not only the way you used to “smoke” but also get adjusted to the new air flow and we haven’t gotten to price. The Journey kit with 3 flavors and device is like $100. (Device is $60, each pack is about $8 a piece) so it always costs you about $20 to get your biweekly-monthly refills. You’re paying around the same price you would’ve to have your cigs. TL-DR overpriced and better quitting options exist

It's no surprise that the FPS genre had a large number of games based on real wars, but something about one being used as an actual recruitment aide? For some reason that feels like such a bigger breach of "War as entertainment" in media.

AA True Soldier wasn't even a legitimate title...of sorts. High Voltage Software was at the helm, and pretty much took Red Storm's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2, re tooled it with AA stuff. Admittedly i had fun during the launch playing online, but quickly died once COD4 was around the corner.

Not sure if you mentioned ARMA's connection to VBS but its not not part of the military industrial complex

ArmA is fairly close to being an official army "simulator" that is commercialized. I'm not sure if you've heard of it, but VBS is the version of ArmA that the US military, Australian military and possibly a few other militaries use. The lines used to be a lot more blurred in the ArmA 1 days as VBS was originally built off that engine. It wasn't until ArmA 3 that VBS and ArmA became really detached in terms of appearances, content, and engines. It is interesting as VBS 4 has the war in Ukraine themed content, while ArmA has decided to stay either completely fictional or use past historical settings (ArmA reforger). It will be interesting to see if ArmA 4 gets a lot of features from VBS 4. A lot of the additions seem to get ported over and models are shared between the two. VBS getting more of the assets shared from ArmA than the other way around though.

No matter how hard you hit or compress sand, it stays the same, unchanged. Pound sand, is telling someone to go do a useless meaningless task. A polite, F-U in the military world.

I think the main reason AA died is because American stopped invading other middle eastern countries. So American gamers felt less patriotic to play the game and it slowly lost it's appeal. Who knows, maybe if American invades another country the game will revive again?

I see everyone hating so I’ll defend fum. I had trouble quitting vaping because I had strong oral fixation and always needed to have something in my mouth (pause). I ended up trying fum bc of papa meat and it actually was a big factor in me quitting. It’s on the pricey side but it saved me money in the long run bc now I don’t spend money on vapes and doctors visits. I recommend fum if you have a bit of extra cash to spend and want to quit smoking.

You’re better off vaping weed. It’s not healthy for your lungs, but at least you aren’t inhaling mineral and essential oils. Plus, you get high! That’s how I kicked smoking back in the day.
