#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

You're really underselling Bo there. He didn't just "leave the company". Bo ransacked the company's cash reserves and ran off to the Bahamas or a similar island nation where he couldn't legally be touched. He screwed Overkill so bad they had to start selling Payday 2 DLC again.

Starbreeze was so in dire need of money that, years after announcing how basically in a good position they were, where they announced that all future PD2 DLC would be free, they had to broke their promises by announcing new paid DLC with new storyline. Also, before PD3 launch, they updated (or broke with ton of bugs) PD2 by making it crossplay with Epic Games, but that meant now to play with friends, Epic's servers NEED to exists

honestly, my favorite video of this game's development, was when Overkill invited several content creators to their HQ in Sweden to play the game together, including Shroud and several others. and while they were playing the game crashed. the host then swapped cameras and said "man those zombies sure are deadly."

@@alostbaron781 Let's make a short list, shall we? 1) Tonedeaf "better than you" behavior; infamously captured by the introduction of flashbangs which was almost universally hated (and slated)... and then CEO Bo Andersson LITERALLY told players "your opinion, my choice" and pushed it through, even made the damned things more obnoxious. Also included lots of "well our "fans" love it" style comments, whenever they did something controversial (spoiler alert : loud people on twitter doesn't equal paying audience, something many media companies are slow to accept, much to their detriment). While nerdSlayer touched on how the CEO was a negative influence, what he failed to capture is that his toxic mindset had permeated the entire company well before development of OTWD was even announced, from the Community manager Almir Listo down to composer Simon Viklund (who acted like such an absolute Cunt to people with valid criticism that it cost him a large swath of followers on twitter at the time). Or that time that Overkill decided to fund youtube creators H3H3, who had been hit with a (spurious) copyright lawsuit meant to silence their criticism (of a videogame, I think). Almir Listo claimed Overkill was "deeply in favor of free speech"... except weeks before he'd put out a community message for Payday 2, following the inclusion of Microtransactions in the game that Overkill had promised would never happen (and shame on us for thinking otherwise!), stating that community negativity would "lead to temporary or permanent bans". _So much for "free speech" then, eh, Almir?_ I need to stop on this point, but the sad fact is that I can keep going about tonedeaf behavior for a while, well into 2023. 2) Lots of handwaving on in-game issues, and general incompetence put on display; best summarized by the arm and leg hitboxes debacle. Developers stated making enemy AI have arm and leg hitboxes was impossible... two weeks later someone modded it into the game, no muss, no fuss. Or David Goldfarb (former project lead/creative director) getting many innovative ideas he'd debut on twitter shot down by Developers, only to see them implemented after his departure from the company. Another great one is the recent switch from Steam P2P matchmaking to a reliance on Epic Online Services... something no one asked for, and which has been extremely detrimental to the game and community. Overkill's response "we're sorry to hear people aren't having a good experience, but we're working on it!". Meanwhile, six months later it's still a mess. 3) Toxic cronyism from the company, defended to the death; best captured by many, MANY instances when Fanboy "Clans" would get beta access, would be instrumental in getting (detrimental) new things added to the game, excessive kowtowing to said "Clans" in terms of game balance, getting free stuff seemingly for no reason other than their fawning over the company and game, excessive mentions and "easter eggs" mentioning these "Clans" in-game... And that's ignoring the nonsense with various Influencers (Starbreeze and Overkill like to call them "Creative Partners" or some other contrived shit) shilling the game. That was the short version (and yet still a wall of text). The long version would cover a LOT more of the previous points (think six to seven paragraphs EACH!), and would delve into Overkill outright trolling people on twitter... with community retaliation that was just such an epic bombardment of memes, gotchas and insults that it would take nerdSlayer twenty minutes just to detail what was once dubbed "the battle of the memes".

@@alostbaron781 Overkill Amir had promised that Payday 2 would never have Pay2Win DLC or stat buffs through mystery boxes. Later on they implemented exactly both of those two things. The entire community for Payday 2 was OUTRAGED. I genuinely gave up the game after they did that because I was so detested. Eventually they relented and skins no longer have stat buffs for their guns, but I still have a very bad taste in my mouth over the entire saga.

Overkill's TWD was one of those games i was really stoked about, mainly because of my great experience with PD2. I still remember watching character trailers, when i got access to the Beta thanks to my owning PD2, when i installed it to play with my friends... here's where things went down hill. Despite having a lot of good ideas, so many things worked either too slow or just badly. I'm thankful i didn't buy the game.

Honestly, it's a shame; the concept of the game seemed pretty cool. Its launch definitely left something to be desired, but it didn't seem like it would be completely unsalvageable given a few updates; it just didn't get that time, and with how things are looking for Overkill now, it seems the same might happen with Payday 3. I wouldn't be surprised to see it here sooner rather than later.

Double Zombie Game Feature? I’m so down for this! Thank you for mentioning Project Zomboid, I think it’s a bright spot in the currently weird and scammy world of zombie survival crafting games. It’s far from perfect, especially with the long development cycles between builds, but I think a good Zomboid RP server PZ would capture a lot more of what Walking Dead fans actually want from a Zombie game. It even has several TWD mods on the steam workshop!

Good vid except for one thing: the Entire Campaign could be played offline. By the time I bought it , no one was playing and I was still able to finish it. It just made the entire map very difficult because there was no bots. Other than that , you got everything right.

I feel this helps explain why Payday 3 has been such a disaster since launch. Starbreeze has had one hopeful recovery after another, but they've never felt like the bad guy. From the Red 5 Studios loot boxes that Starbreeze had to buy their studio back, to Payday 2 shutting down but surviving due to their fire sale. Now Payday 3 has failed to come close to expectation and there's already $40 in DLC. To me, it now seems Starbreeze is really good at making terrible decisions and killing their devs over it. Death of a game : Mabinogi..... I'd like to recommend that but it would probably be impossible to make, I'm not sure there's a catalogue of changes that would have caused it anywhere. I could tell you a lot of it myself, but that'd just be one source. Also the game was pretty niche to start with.

The first issue was the fact that overkill was working on it. If you want a game with a heavy narrative and intense character moments in a world that is built upon the interactions of the people within it, you don't have a company known for making games with minimal story writing and repetitive, arcadey shooter gameplay.

Idk if you've heard of the game SOS but it could be an interesting death of a game video on it. From having Snoop dog play it live on stream to remaking the game into a PUBG clone that was worse in every way into death. Either way thanks for the series. One of my favorite series on youtube. Ngl, feels like the Walking Dead would be really suited to something like STALKER GAMMA or a Tarkov-esque extraction shooter type of game. Where faction relations, hardcore/semi-hardcore gameplay and survival elements, and scavenging would really feel like you're in the Walking Dead. The main difference between the two just being either PvE or PvEvP focused.

Why on earth they made the game like... this, instead of making a story focused FPS shooter/rpg hybrid akin to Deux Ex Human Revolution or Dying Light, is beyond me. TWD's universe doesn't really mesh well with looter shooter and multiplayer mechanics like this. Not to mention it's already a super oversaturated genre. TWD's strength is in the storytelling.

A tidbit of question to anyone who happens to be up to date: beyond the myriad of problems listed in the video, how does the brand of 'The Walking Dead' hold up? To my knowledge, the series/storyline popularity peaked around 2015, and it was not what it used to be by the game launched. Could this have added to the failure of the game as well?

I'm willing to bet most of that hype was primarily because of the premise: A zombie survival game set in Washington D.C made by the creators of Payday. Sometimes a concept can overpower just about everything else, especially prior to release. (Hell, even I think this concept had some potential, especially because of the setting: You can count on one hand the number of games set in the District of Columbia in the last 10 years that were even fun and still have at least 2-3 fingers left over. The number gets even smaller once you narrow it down to zombie games: At BEST one or two that were even remotely mediocre. You get the point about the power of a concept?)
