I honestly believe if the game had a rerelease with slight tweaks, balancing and engine+graphics upgrades it could be successful. Could you elaborate?
@rlelinney46466 жыл бұрын
@@kazielbonn I would say that PVP which drew us in, is also what drove us away. For my experience there was not much PVE in Warhammer, and it left PVP as the main source of entertainment. But we reached a point where one side would be beat 9/10 times, That side eventually quit participating in citidel battles and PVP as a whole. With no other real draws, that ended the game abruptly.
@machineofadream6 жыл бұрын
Ironically the PVE questing that was in the game was better than WoW at the time and I believe they could have had more success talking the game up as a true full-on competitor in every way and not just a PVP game. There are plenty of people who like to only PVE but also plenty of people who like both PVE and PVP. Warhammer was only advertising itself as a PVP game so it didn't attract either group of people. Only attracted PVPers. But the PVE with shared zone objectives could have really pulled a lot of the PVE players if it were advertised and made into a viable endgame activity.

@@galloy9551 This is the same problem weve seen from blizzard for the last 15 years. WoW became "Everything" for the company, but they failed as a company to expand their opportunities to exceed their needs, made worse by devs eventually climbing the ranks of the heirarchy who are too obsessed with disrupting the status quo of the base game, rather then letting successful development earn its time in the sun while new tools are developed alongside to improve classes that arent doing as well.

Sadly, not far off. EA’s mismanaged MMORPGs from the start. The best they’ve done to date is SWTOR, but even though F2P saved that game, the model EA used turned off enough people that I believe it limited just how successful it could have been, given a less restrictive F2P model (like ESO, which I thought for sure would be dead by now, but am happily surprised at its success).

It hurts my soul how many games EA has ruined over the years. SWTOR being mentioned briefly in this video reminded me of when they had the balls to claim if SWTOR maintained 500k subscribers, it would be considered "successful". If it maintained 1 million subscribers, it would "very successful". Then the moment subs dipped below 1million, they slapped one of the worst F2P business models I've ever seen on the game. So much for being successful at 500k....
@spencers41216 жыл бұрын
And here we are a year later and they are still ramming that F2P model, with the same countless re skinned items. And very little actual game changes or additions. SWTOR had crap gameplay, though. Typical of a game trying to be "The WoW Killer" in that time was to find a lacking aspect of WoW and focus on that. How EA can then add insult to injury: Let GOA handle the EU servers. What a fucking clusterfuck that was. I bought the game - never played it, though not for lack of trying. Every time I tried to start up the game I'd end up getting a black screen when the company logos were supposed to show up. Checked various forums for potential causes and tried whatever solutions I could find. None worked. Contacted GOA support, telling them about the issue and what I had tried doing to fix it. Their response: a copypaste from their FAQ, which of course I had already tried. Contacted GOA support again after trying a few more things unsuccessfully, adding those to the list from the previous email I sent them: got another copypaste of their FAQ. Tried yet more shit in a futile attempt to get the game running but ended up contacting GOA support a 3rd time, listing all the fixes I had tried and also mentioning my growing suspicion that they weren't even reading the emails they received (in light of their insistence on simply replying with the same fucking copypaste every time). Guess what their reply was. Yup... The same fucking copypaste. I uninstalled the game, sent them yet another email to voice my discontent with their so-called support and never looked back. Received a reply to that email - with a very familiar copypaste. Needless to say, GOA's abject incompetence left me feeling nothing but utter disdain for the company.

I really appreciate RoR team and their project, but sadly, the god awful engine makes it unplayable for many interested players. The graphics are really bad, but that would not be a problem for lovers of Warhammer. But its clunkyness and the "balancing" on RoR makes it dull, boring amd tedious. They focus a lot on sieges, they balanced around that. Thats why some classes feel even worse than on the original servers. I second what John Smith says. While it's great to be able to play Warhammer Online again, don't get too invested in it, as the staff can be rather aggressive in forcing gameplay changes down your throats, and locking any posts that try to discuss the changes they make. It's why I've quit. That, and the fact that my friends didn't have the time and patience to grind npc's for weeks to reach level 40, so they had quit earlier. PvP was deserted for mid tiers, so that wasn't a leveling option back then. Not sure how it is now.

Apart from all its (deserved) "Bad Guy" rep, EA generally had a horrible record with MMOs in particular going all the way back to pre-WoW days... Half-baked launches, a few years (or even months) of languishing in neglect and a shutdown... Motor City, Earth&Beyond, The Sims Online... My personal feel is that EA simply doesn't get that MMOs aren't like the kind of games that made them rich. With MMOs the launch isn't the moment when you can more or less coast from then on, and transfer most of the team and money to work on BigFranchise: 2019. It's where the really difficult part begins. And people really, really don't like bugs in MMOs, things that are less than ideal, but tolerable in a single-player game are MMO killers.
I wish they would come out with a 2019 version of this game. The pvp was so good in this game.

The art was dark, jagged, and corrupted. The quests were done with gory details and gave a sense of helplessness. Elves being frozen by cockatrice but being able to feel while their eyes were pecked out, nurglings pouring out of wounds, the dying Order npcs crying in pain and for their mother, etc. I liked RvR but I loved the quests and exploring. I remember how hyped I was for this. I played Chaos and Dark Elves, though I tried a few Order characters as well. It was a complete and total travesty. While I met some great people, playing as destruction became more and more frustrating. Trying to take a keep, when there were just three bright wizards inside it, became impossible. They'd spam Rain of Fire in overlapping fields through the gatehouse, and not even a fully geared Black Orc being actively healed could make it through without dying. It became impossible to play, and people started leaving in droves. I was gone for a week and a half at one point ... when I came back, the server had gone from destruction struggling hard but -barely- managing to hang on to at least some of their keeps and their capitals, to having lost everything. And I do mean everything. Not a single keep stood. There were more order-players in the capital than destruction players at any given time. It was impossible to move without being butchered by griefers and gankers. It happened -really- fast. Within two weeks of that, my entire guild had disbanded and eight out of ten players had left the game. Around that time, a rumour started going around on the destruction side that the reason why Bright Wizards were so ridiculously overpowered was, that the development team universally played them and kept buffing them with every weekly down-period, to do slightly more damage. It seemed every time we got a patch designed to fix one of those stability issues NerdSlayer mentions in this video, we also saw a buff of the damage done by Order-characters, primarily the Witch Hunter and Bright Wizard classes, and a decrease in damage done by practically every destruction class. In the end, people who played Dark Elf Sorceresses (don't get me started on the whole sorcerer fuckup), were generally advised by their guilds to swap to different classes or be rendered completely obsolete. Their Pit of Shadows-spell or whatever it was called, was so underpowered that even bright wizards, with no armour, walked into them, danced a jig and walked back out practically unscathed. I agree with almost everything said in this video, except that it was my experience that the unbalancing issue was -a lot worse- than what NerdSlayer presented it as. It was absolutely crippling and made so many destruction-players simply quit the game that they lost a significant part of their fan-base. People almost always prefer to play good guys. The developers, as NerdSlayer points out, WERE made aware during Beta that this was already a serious problem -before- release. All they did was fob people off with some vague promise of "intelligent NPCs" who would make up the difference in numbers on any PvP battlefield and that their "revolutionary new AI" would allow them to easily make up for the differences in players. What did we get? AIs that could barely use their abilities, routinely ran into walls and more often than not simply stood around getting slaughtered while the enemy hacked them to pieces, before coming for the tiny handful of -actual- Destruction-players trying to hold on to their capital for what ... ten more minutes? It had so much potential. This -could- have been the game that had given WoW serious competition. Warhammer has a massive fan following world-wide and it could have been so damn good if the developers hadn't screwed the players over so badly. It's one of the great "what ifs" of gaming. What if ... Warhammer: Age of Reckoning hadn't been so pissing awful.
@thamor47468 жыл бұрын
Well said, although I did play Order side. But I did understand that destruction mirror classes were totally outperformed mostly by their Order counter parts, like AM vs Shaman was just ridicilous how much better AM was at everything from healing to dps. My server did have good destruction players so it was alot more even fighting on for both sides.
@SirTimbo8 жыл бұрын
yeah, they also put some of the key abilities on the specs of the weakest classes of destruction. Like the offensive aoe Cooldown increaser. For order it was on slayers and they just had it on themselves as a pbaoe. For destruction it was on the squig herder in their melee spec, and was focused as an aoe around their pet, which in the melee tree was ranged and squishy s very hard to get off in a group...
@2roly28 жыл бұрын
Aslaug75 , as when I was playing everyone played Marauders so they can do that long ass pull . pull a single enemy player into your group that shit had long ass range . White lions had the same ability but with their pet that could be killed before it got to its target .Kotbs & Chosen had those cheese addons called twister , made their chants automated like no tomorrow so endless health and endurance . then players were stacking jewelry that had health regeneration on them which made a defensive Kotbs or Chosen outlast giving them the best guard tank in the game .
@SirTimbo8 жыл бұрын
The white lion's pull had over twice the range though.
@2roly28 жыл бұрын
SirTimbo can't pull anything when pet dies , Marauders just had a tether which can't be targeted so it just pulls do easy . the White Lions pet can be targeted and destroyed easily so their pull was useless .

Shortly after this came out WoW reached its peak. I was too young to appreciate what WAR did and joined the WOTLK bandwagon (which was also great.) If this game could have survived until Warlords of Draenoir and had texture and a Tomb King/Skaven/Lizardman/Vampires expansions, it would still be alive today I think.

Yep. Wrath of the Lich King was great. I left WoW for WAR and when I found out there was no end game content in WAR (and it was repetitious and not fun), went back to WoW. If they had waited another year and polished the game, would have been better for them.

This is for me the reason enough to forever hate EA. I haven't bought or played a single game that bears their logo since 2013 and have pirated and will continue to pirate their entire catalog and upload it to a seedbox I've bought exclusively to torrent them for ages so no one will have to buy their filth ever again.
@flyingspaghetti8 жыл бұрын
2013? Please. EA killed the *ENTIRE* Command & Conquer series in 2010, a series flourishing since 1995. Actually EA effectively killed the RTS genre, so that in '10s the RTS games are considered "niche" and Total War flailing the rotten corpse of RTS around till they make money out of it. I have been pirating every EA game ever released, even retroactively. Never felt bad for either the developers (aka people making the game) or the publishers (aka people releasing and marketing the game). Forcing them to close game studios? Don't care. Forcing them to close servers and online games? Don't care.

So you play games published for EA? Shock. Since EA are publishers, start blaming developers instead. Then we might just get what we want.

If you had any idea how up close and personal EA is with their products you'd know why we hate EA and not the developers. Take BF4 for example. DICE employees have come out personally to backlash EA for pushing the release date 10 months earlier than planned, in order to make quicker money.

I remember being a Realm Captain under the character named Anatharion. I ran a warband, and had four other warbands in communication with me during peak times. For a while I decided what Realms all the RVR Order would attack, what keeps we would defend, and which enemies I needed flanked and such. I had a great time running the server Order side for weeks on end until I realised I'd best get back to college before I flunked out. lol Warhammer Online PVP as amazing for its time when it came to experiencing battles with over 300 players at once. Even though the FPS drops were huge. Guild Wars 2 was the only other game where I experienced anything as close to real war in a video game again. Warhammer Online did it best though.
@jesmcdevlin31164 жыл бұрын
I likely faced off against you at some point. Back in the day I was the one leading the 4+ WB groups on chaos side. I never played T4 though, only T1-3. Mostly because even though i had T4 characters, i was the only one of my friends who no lifed the game that hard. XD I really miss the sense of comradery the game had. One night i'd lead the T3 warband across every zone, purging the order from all the land, in a 6 hour long campaign. Each keep was a slow arduous battle. We had to set an entire warband to counter flanking just to keep the order from trying to come from behind us, while our other 2 warbands focused a keep and another was off scouting the area around us and preventing more troups from getting into the keep to defend. Logged off that night and got a litany of "Hail Warchief Stompa'!" (My black orks name.) shouted at me in game, sent as PMs, and even a few mails if i remember correctly. Fucking glorious. Rest in peace WAR. I think i'll download ROR and give it a shot.

It really was warcraft in a way. The AOE packs where made possible when mythic nerfed resistances. Tanks would load up on spell resistance, usually fire if you were destruction, which allowed them to be legitimate pvp tanks. The game was balanced around high resistance tanks in the beta. Bright Wizarda complained because that wasn't how things worked in WOW. Mythic nerfed resistance then BW ran into entire war bands and blew them up. While BW, who BTW were all pricks, argued that resistances should be more in line with WOW they never once argued that damage coefficients on AOE should be in line with WOW. In wow damage scaled at only about 20% for instant cast AOE all spells in WH scaled 100%. It didnt matter if it was direct damage or aoe. When you included that BW had a tallent that added additional fire damage, creeping flames I think it was, that damage also scaled at 100%. So BW got 200% spell damage on all targets on instant cast AOE. It was the high tank resistance that kept this major oversight from ruining game balance. Once BW succeeded in getting the devs to agree that tank resistance was too high BW literally blew up the fricking game.
@damiengonzalez72634 жыл бұрын
I was waiting for him to bring this up in the video. The game turned into a crazy aoe fest. At about the same time that BW got insanely OP they thought theyd balance it by taking the 2 healing classes damage mechanioc away and making those off hand things all they needed to generate mana. So theyd just sit there and spam AOE heals with no danger to themselves. This whole fiasco is what drove me away. And I loved the game at launce.

Well, it's a good thing Warhammer had PvE, because the public quests completely changed MMOs forever. The Tome of Knowledge was also the first MMO achievement system I can remember, and was later adopted by...well...everything? It still suffers from all the same problems, 2 factions, balance, content. Is a very boring game very 1 sided as people want gear and will play 70% vs 30% often with no intervention by devs. Even games like planetside2 with 3 factions has max pop regulations. Not in RoR and very low lock out that encourages xrealming. Balance is just random, often run by lobbyists who spam forms in their factions favor. You can work on a character for years just to have it nerfed to the ground in 1 patch, no explanation or care given to those who worked so hard to get best in slot gear for said class. Don't bother with this private server unless you would like a reminder of why this game failed in the first place.

32:20 "But EA didn't treat it like it was successful." Seems to be a common theme with EA. There was this MOBA named Dawngate which was published by EA. It definitely wasn't a bad game based on quality. Sure it was no LoL oder DotA 'killer' but has trying to 'kill' well established games ever been successful? Many people spoke rather positively about the game's quality and style. However, apparently that wasn't enough for EA and the game was canned in beta. 'Somewhat successful' isn't enough for EA.
@Tamaki7427 жыл бұрын
That's the biggest problem with EA and subsequently, the big gaming companies nowadays. Mainly because they're controlled a lot of people who don't understand and don't even care about how passionate their companies and the gamers are about their games.
@wtfbbq4 жыл бұрын
This is exactly the problem. EA is run by executives and is publicly traded so all they care about are their earnings. They have a meeting and look at a game like WoW or LoL or DOTA or Destiny and think "OK, we need to make a game that captures that audience" .... Then they make the game, give it 6 months, and at their next board of directors meeting go "OK, this game doesnt have the same numbers as WoW or LoL and it was supposed to be the WoW or LoL killer. Time to cut our losses, stop developing new content, milk the remaining players as much as we can until they leave, then shut down the game." They haven't learned they need more than hype to actually keep people around. They are good at marketing and getting a huge number of people to try their games, and then people discover there is no substance behind the hype and leave. EA seems to have just gone all-in on this business strategy and just survives off hype to generate pre-order sales, game dies within a year, rinse and repeat.
@mjkittredge3 жыл бұрын
it's like what they did to Darkspore, an excellent ARPG that innovated and did so much right. The fanbase was passionate but EA didn't market the game and cut the dev team down and there was barely any content made for it after launch, no expansions. They let it die, then de-listed it, then took the servers offline making it impossible to play. I'll always hate EA for doing this to a brilliant game I loved.

I loved this game. The first 2 months. I had a dark elf witch that had basically a suicide-build, there was a spell where you did AOE damage in a radious from yourself, by basically exploding your own spirit in dark warp energy. But you took damage when doing so. I basically sprinted and jumped straight into the enemy clump on stalemate battles, and just spammed my self-explosion ability, super satisfying kill sound effects, got 5-10 kills, then jumped back out with 5% health remaining xD Then saw my team break through the stalemate in the formation splitting chaos that ensued. It was hilariously fun. But then i realized that the endgame basically DIDNT exist at all at launch, and at that point i was just like, whats the point of continuing to play if there is nothing to look forward to at the endgame (zones and quests and even gear didnt exist for the last levels). So i stopped my subscription.

The reason the game fell sharply after the first year was because Blizzard rushed out Wrath of the Lich King right after WAR's release, the second biggest reason was that people started noticing that the balance was stacked against the Destruction side. - They buffed the Order classes *massively* to make it more appealing in order to balance the 1:5 population ratio. This was seen when Rune Priest quick heal was 40% stronger than the Zealot's, all abilities that mirrored each other was heavily in the favor of Order. They weren't objectively better, they intentionally buffed the Order classes regardless of CC or difference here. This caused MASSIVE issues when you would get the World buffs, you would see a group of 5 Bright Wizards run around with 880% more damage, this is on top of the fact that they already dealt more damage than Sorcerers did and had a MUCH wider area of effect. - This caused massive issues when going into Battlegrounds, Blackguard had a 5 yard knockback cone, the mirrored version from Ironbreaker was a god damned 360 degree 20 yard knockback, same cost and same ability of the same level. There was nothing the Blackguard did better than the Ironbreaker could do, and Ironbreakers would use 2handers to tank and deal ludicrous amounts of damage without any efforts, and Blackguard was supposed to be the damage opposite of Ironbreaker. As patches went on they did shorten the gap eventually but they had already ruined the playerbase.

Now, technically it's not dead. EA no longer runs it and Return of Reckoning is a fan server that has a HUGE amount of players. Huge enough to still have massive battles on the higher level battlefields and even massive battles on the 10 - 19 battlefield where humans and chaos fight. It's great. You got most of these correct. Players did not sign up to run same pve 5 man instance 30 times, but would do them anyway for the gear. Also in open RVR terrain plays a huge role and there were no natural bottlenecks, some zones were not designed for open pvp just the geography of them was very bad. Lastly the city siege was a pve raid mostly. A big item you mentioned is bad itemization, such as pve sets being superior and also stats on items were completely randomised with casters getting melee stats and so on. I would say that most of these could be easily fixed if someone on the team actually cared. Really brilliant class design and system, most everything relating to pvp was great. As for ways to make a game have long term potential from pvp alone, they could have monthly events that changed the setting to bring variety.

Yeah Eataine was great for that, just open fields for the most part. The battles in that game were just so dynamic that unless you could 'read' the battle, you could get sideswiped very easily. Speaking strictly from a healer point of view, it was a learned skill to be able to do that over time

This game had some of the best classes to play in any MMO. I've been playing MMO's since Ultima Online (MUDs,MOO's and MUSH's before that) - still pay for a WoW Sub and drop in and play Neverwinter, DDO, LOTRO, The Div2, ESO amongst others still installed on my system. Always been a Pve 'Raider/Carebear' as PvP wasn't my thing ... except in Warhammer Online. This was the only game where I was not only happy to do some PvP but actively ran plenty of battlegrounds and RvR, and it was for both factions, I loved playing all of the classes, especially those Melee Healers! Coincidentally the only MMO I have ever had healer toons. Thanks to this video I am downloading that private server to give it a go over this Easter long weekend, bit of nostalgia and re-experience those awesome Tier 1 melee healers ;) I would re-buy this game in a heartbeat if it was ever re-launched in an updated format ;)

2roly2 My favorite was the Iron Breaker/Swordsmaster, 2 Slayers,2 healers group The swordmaster would use his ability that reduced all cooldowns by 5 seconds and the slayers would use their tactic that gave them 5 less cooldowns when raging. It reduced their aoe rune to 0 cooldown and they would just run up on people spamming it. It was great for keep door defenses

see I did the exact opposite with my black orc friend where we would do something similar but it would increase the CDs on a single target by ten seconds, it let us kill warrior priests and was pretty much the only way to kill them without running a train on them

Warhammer Online could’ve easily been a three of four faction game. Faction 1: Empire Dwarfs High Elves Bretonnia Wood Elves Faction 2: Chaos Beastmen Skaven Chaos Dwarfs Dark Elves Faction 3: Orcs Goblins Ogres Trolls Faction 4: Vampire Counts Tomb Kings (And there was still Kislev, Norsca, Lizardmen, Cathay, Arabs, Ind, Estalia and Tilea) So yeah, lots of room for factions.

Oh wow. You've been doing this for awhile, eh? Love how the format is evolved. Ive always thought the whole "clue" aspect of the series was an absolutely genius way to hook people into not only listening, but also watching the video to its conclusion. Not many channels have this kind of active engagement aspect to them. Not that I can think of anyway.

I played both Camelot and WAR. I loved both games. Imo no other game has captured the same excitement i felt during those years.

I miss this game a lot. I played sorceress and PVP was so incredible. I remember sneaking up on hordes of order forces, and unleashing shadows on them all. I lost most of my HP by straining myself, and somebody would finish me off - but I'd take down 10+ people. It was crazy. People were so focused on the blob of enemies in front of them, that they wouldn't notice me.

If I recall, scenarios we're one of the best ways to level up. Moved to this game with a guild from AoC. Oh man. It was soo much fun! So many good times. Def checking out the private server

I been buying PC games all my life and this was one of the only ones where I ordered the special edition or w/e... Still have the hardback book "Art of warhammer online" which showcases a lot of the concept art that went into the games design phases.

In 2011 they launched Dark age of Camelot?? Common even a google search would have hinted (October 10, 2001). Even the next 2 expansions where before that

It's clearly a typo. There's literally dozens of dates mentioned. You think the one I said wrong I would somehow defend rofl?

or stop selling license to any studios who happen to pass by and actually give work to competent ones

CastelDawn If only they had allowed Blizzard to make the Warhammer games in the 90's. Things would be quite different now.

Yeah it's amazing how GW handle their licenses; sometimes they would NEVER offer their licenses some years and at other times, especially in more recent times, they would give them out to everyone.

I know I am years late but, I loved this game, but it was painful to play, tons of lag and zones crashed and reset frequently. Also the exploits.. The reason why the performance issues is, the engine was the DAOC engine, heavily patched..

I had a friend convince me to switch from WoW to WOAoR at it's launch. Had a ton of fublowing myself up as a bright wizard, but I was always more of a PvE kind of guy, so its huge focus on PvP was a turn-off for me. Not to mention the oppressively dark graphics. Felt like I was choking the whole time.

Warrior priest was my choice. One of the most fun classes I've ever played in my MMORPG days. I loved everything about it. I joined the private sever for a while but I just dont have enough time anymore sadly.

Third Faction? They should never have split into two factions to begin with. It's not an Alliance vs Horde setting. Every single race has been at war with every single other race (the only exception being that Dwarves and the Empire have never been at war each other). Even within factions there's fighting. Chaos warbands will often fight each other. Orcs will fight anything and everything, including their own mates. Different regions of the Empire have gone to war with each other. This is why I never played it. It would have worked far better as a Planetside clone than a WarCrack clone.

God, I miss this game. I remember back in the beginning being with one of the largest guilds on the server and wrecking Order weekly. Was so much fun... and then ... nothing. There was nothing new to do. I had all the classes maxed with max gear and there was just no new content. :(

Maybe if Mythic didnt act like condescending assholes to players complaining about bugs and giving suggestions in online forums they'd still have a game today... They were the worse ever, locking threads and snapping at you the second that you made a constructive critic on how to improve this otherwise promessing game. I guess Karma catched up with them
