Magnus Reslow, a Swedish single-handed sailor, shipwrecked at the coast of Colombia. Close to the sunken boat the coast guard found a dead body. Obviously Magnus. But even three weeks after the tragedy the body hasn't been identified yet. Friends and family in Sweden are worried that the cause of death is being hidden. Is Magnus a victim of a crime? Again? Because Magnus was already attacked by pirates six weeks before he died and he was afraid of leaving the marina. In this report we try to figure out what might have happened on SV Dhokus. For this report we got in contact with Magnus' family and friends in Sweden. In this video we used sequences from an interview with Magnus we had in January, right after the pirate attack. We would also like to clear up some rumors that have been spread in local media.

Thanks for sharing Magnus' story. He seemed like the kind of old salt you would invite over for dinner and beers to share tales from the sea. Having lived full time on yachts for almost 11 years now, anytime you hear a story like this, it feels like it hits close to home. The community is small. Happy that despite his tragic ending, and all he endured leading to the end, he got to experience the kindness of the sailing community rallying around him to get him back out there and do what he loves. Fair finds, Magnus.

Thank you for helping the sad demise of Magnus not go unnoticed and with skilful narrative. He did not deserve such an end and without wishing to criticise him at all, his decision to sail into that weather system, given his considerable experience is puzzling and raises the question did something and or someone created the conditions that compelled him to do so.

First of all, so sad to ear this terrible news… I saw the first video about the attack and I was already sad enough, but to found randomly this one was a shock! I sailed couple of years ago in theses exact areas, was not easy and full of “surprises”. I had my dinghy stoled after 2 weeks at anchor front of Cabo de La Vela, then went to Santa Marta, Puerto Velero, Cartagena… Actually while at Puerto Velero Marina I was “lucky” enough to bought a dinghy from a Canadian couple who wrecked by night their boat on the Puerto Velero peninsula where Magnus was found from what I understood. This peninsula is not on most of the charts because it was created recently by the accumulation of mud coming from Magdalena river, after a modification of the seawall protecting the entrance to Baranquilla. Numerous boats crashed into it because of that ! In addition of that, waves and current and wind are terrific right here, I did some kitesurfing on this side during my stay at Puerto Velero, I get in trouble couple of times… Maybe he changed his plans and finally decide to sail close to shore, conditions are getting better just after puerto velero close to the shore, you can see that on weather forecast, at the opposite if you’re far offshore you will be in strong weather for a long distance. If he did so, that’s easy to run aground without up to date electronic charts, that he didn’t had as he explain during the interview… And believe me this peninsula is very tricky, shallow water extend far offshore and wave and current again are massive, easy to lose the control of your boat then break a rudder at the first contact with the seabed. 25-30 kts winds are the norm along this part of Colombia coast, nonsense to state that’s a suicide because leaving in theses conditions, because that’s almost always theses conditions! I myself left Santa-Marta with this kind of forecast, it was epic, but no choice. I don’t know him but from what you said in the video I don’t believe that’s a suicide. In my personal opinion, I think that could be purely accidental. But, without wanting to say anything bad about Colombia, that’s also a pretty fishy country… I experienced myself some troubles with authorities, robbers, … I will not say that it is impossible something bad happened to him. Evidences on the boat are probably long gone since the time but an autopsy is more than needed!!! Swedish authorities should get the body to Sweden and deeply look for something ! Really really sad for him 🥲

Thanks for sharing this tragic news. I am very sad to hear about Magnus passing away a few weeks ago it is only today that I hear about it. A few weeks ago, I watched the story about the ruthless pirate attacks, and just this week I told someone who asked about pirates, about Magnus's story. I wish all his friends and family strength and that they will get him home soon. Magnus chose the life he did, and he died at sea, the place he loved so much. RIP, Magnus.

Dear Jens, thank you for reporting this sad event, I'm very sorry to see and hear of Magnus passing. He is such a lovely soul who is fiercely independent. I also feel there has been a lot of defamation, tall tales with short legs around his precious life. He was obviously far too open about everything he experienced and his fears. I agree with Magnus's family "that something is being covered up". Highly Disappointed with the Swedish Embassy. I saw your first report of him and the scary trauma he experienced. For the coast guards to have found his damaged boat with a body floating by (Magnus) they must have been on his tail, as you have stated he is an experienced sailor, however a body was found close to the boat and had not floated out into the open sea.

Just thinking about a hypothetical scenario, since a gale warning had been issued and with the marina’s situation, Magnus might decided to go out this particular morning to take advantage of the storm to sail out to sea quicker and knowing that pirates won’t go out in that kind of weather he would feel safer knowing that he had seen for sure worst storm and stronger wind than 30 knots. His physical and mental shape might have jeopardized his sailing capacities that very sad day. R.I.P Magnus , you’re still free as you’ve been all your life !

I think there is some truth there except of his mental heath as it looked strong but just not how people expect, as I think he was used to being on his own you live with just facts as it’s just you, there was no social show that people do when use to have & living with a lot of people. There is something that stinks & I can smell it from here. The police & the pirates are working together. I would push for the source at the newspaper, as someone has given them information to create a story giving a profered picture .

@@MrChrisHobday , I definitely agree with you, I live in Ecuador and it is a very common fact that police and thieves work together, in Ecuador if a thief robs you for less than 600$, the police has the obligation to release the suspect after 24 hours of detention with no consequences . And for example, the thief took tools or something else , you need the original invoice of the good that had been stolen even if the police has it in hand…

'HERE BE MONSTERS !' is a warning to all sailors who venture out on the briney deep. While the image of carefree days under sunny skies and warm and friendly waters is what many hold when contemplating the sailing life, no matter where you venture the dangers of bad people with bad intents lies hidden in plain sight among the chance encounters aboard and abroad in the sailing world. Proceed at your own peril and keep a weather eye.

Such a sad ending to a terrific man. The narration and the interview were both calm and clear, in fact I could have listened to another hour of him speaking. Amongst all the tragedy was a very calming voice. I can't think Magnus was attacked on that last journey, no pirate in his right mind would risk such an attack for so little reward in that kind of weather, which makes me think he simply got into trouble, and as he says himself, he was in pain all over so in a weakened state he may not have been able to handle the conditions.

There is no doubt about it, but maintaning a boat in seaworthy order, is getting increasingly expensive and difficult to achieve, especially on a fixed budget. Parts are getting increasingly expensive, hard to find and have an increasinly shorter life expectancy, such that you find yourself replacing parts that you only replaced a few years previously. Of course, i have no insight into what happened to Magnus, may he rest in peace, but he was not alone in finding this lifestyle under increasing pessure.

Thanks very much for putting this video together. I remember seeing the article some months ago of the sailor defending himself with a Molotov cocktail. I believe that in those conditions, the wind is fine, but 3m swell, and his physical health most likely led to Magnus' death. His body, being sore all over, after being attacked by those criminal, they indirectly caused his death. His physical condition had deteriorated, he had 40 years experience on boats, but no years experience using a body that was badly injured. What would be interesting would be to determine, based on the weather conditions, when would Magnus have reefed the sails? Would he have departed with more sail? If so, if there was an accident when reefing, would the current have taken his boat and his body to shore where it ended up? I have sailed with swedes before, and I watched the man's initial interview, I doubt he ever wore a life jacket or harnessed on. Very sad, I am glad though he lived life the way he wanted. Bloody good sailors those Swedes, RIP Magnus ❤

Can i commend you for approaching this matter, with the sensitivity that you did? I am sure Magnus would appreciate it. And yes, the simplest explanation is often the most likely one, in that a combination of poor boat condition, tiredness and (perhaps) a monentary lack of good judgment, probably led to this outcome, alhough we will likeky never know for certain.

Aye m8’s! Hope you continue the investigation in this matter 🙏🏽 It IS important for all of us. Regardless of which waters we are sailing we should be able to be safe. If Colombia doesn’t want the world to know the truth - they are hiding something. That is a strong signal to all sailors to keep out of the area. If they can prove it was an accident - they should have a lot to win. If they can’t prove an accident - there is at least one police officer who is cooperating with the so called “pirates”

There are some places in the world where you just shouldn't go sailing, especially alone, or in an unseeworthy yacht. $230 a month pension is not enough to maintain a yacht, being a dreamer isn't enough. It's a sorry story, but more likely just misadventure. The yacht would have no performance with a heavy growth on the hull, sailing or with a working motor. The currents would take her.

I'd assume - Magnus experience with pirates were reasons to departure when storm was approaching as skids can't handle such conditions at all - Magnus left few days over the due-date for departure from the marina (Jan 10th - Feb 10th ) - with heavy current and win direction aligned to the current direction there was little he could do - but had no sea room so we have storm fails / reefed sails. - Hand-steering in such conditions when you need to tack or lower sail - means he had to fix somewhat steering and if that got lose during the work on sails , it could have resulted in accident. Seeing boat conditions and interiors - one would ask what was taken (things of value like a radio or else). When you say body was found - was Magnus wearing west normally ? has he had INS enabled on his boat ? for very experienced sailed leaving into gale winds was something that I can't understand with exception of above risk he try to mitigate ( pirates vs bad weather)

I spent a lot of years sailing single handed. I NEVER went on deck without a harness connected to the boat. I could also raise lower and reef sails from the cockpit. The anchor also. Loran was just coming in with the two hills and the house to ligb up. I had some pretty good navigational skills as well as I learned so much from watching the water and waves, I could tell if sand trees or water was over the horizon by the reflection of the sun on the bottom of the clouds. You can tell if land is 20 or 30 miles away by looking at the water. I am Sure I made some mistakes and misjudgements, but with dead reckoning, all the mistakes seem to cancel eachother out. Hay dead reckoning is just a fancy word for guessing where the hell you are at.

I saw the interview a couple of months ago and also checked out some older Swedish interviews with him on YT. Even though these last events is a very sad story, there is something in the way he tells the story about his life that doesnt really add up. The amount of times he has been robbed, details of shiprecks and jobs he had and so on, paints a picture of a person of course living an unusual life, but also a story about a guy stuck in a lifestyle where you tell the story you think people might want to hear. As he spent some time with the swedish sailor Sven Yrvind it is easy to understand what lifestyle has inspired him, but also how to dramatise a story. About this incident one has to ask a couple of questions. Experienced as he was, why expose yourself to those conditions, Colombian coast, questionable authorities ect? And the question about piracy, where it is very unlikely that pirates would look for pray in rough wheather... And the vessel a Laurin 32, a well renown ocean cruiser from back then that even in a poor condition can handle all kinds of wheather. It might be tough to tack your way into safety against wind and current in that full keled double ender, but then again why be there in the first place? Is situations like this there is often a row of small, in themselves insignificant actions, but stacked on top of each other they come to a catastrophic outcome. In this case sadly the end of someone living out his dream...

Tragische Geschichte.

I don’t think it’s right or fair to judge the capabilities of the Captain or his vessel. As other Captains might not except the visual aspect of his ship, that not being shipshape & Bristol fashion. I have no doubt at all of the seaworthy of his vessel & with the additional funds he received he had the means to address any concerns. On top what do you think he was doing for those 30 days? Watching Netflix? No he wanted to be out on the water somewhere safe. Has anyone know if his account has been accessed? As the police & the pirates would know he had come into some money. And in that area that amount of money. It being in cash or still in his account. By holding off being identified stops family & Swedish authorities access to his accounts will not be given to Next of Kin etc. I would push for the source at the newspaper, as someone has given them information to create a story giving a profered picture. And look into if any money has been taken, who was following him on social as they were following him no doubt. Accounts based in that area two fake accounts most likely but not definitely. Please keep the sailing community updated. Thanks

Most of the donations he got are still on his Swedish bank account. The only money he used was for paying the marina fee and to buy some food. The problem was that Magnus was still waiting for his credit card to get cash at an ATM. His old card was stolen at the attack. A Swedish friend in Santa Marta helped him out and Magnus transferred the borrowed money back to him.

if word had indeed gotten out that he had received a large sum of money then foul play is VERY likely , interesting how much speculation and all up in his PRIVATE business many were BEFORE his death , interesting that the American sailor and others were so judgmental and speculative willing to share unfounded rumor and lies . Interesting that is boat is said to be in "poor" condition time and again with no specifics , because he had no auto pilot or windvane ? Did he exaggerate a bit ? maybe , but so what , all sailors tell tall tales ! RIP to a Man who did what others fear to do !

My only problem with this is why would pirates target his boat too be honest just looking at it all I don’t want to sound like a conspiracy person but if your pirate you would target something that would look like it has money on it so was he contacted by a drug runner or something like this I just don’t

He is clearly a drinker but seems to be content with moving on with his adventures in your meeting. I'd rule out suicide... With a combination of the local police knowing the thieves, the mysterious woman he had befriended and that he had come into a small amount of money, I'd think these things are tied and the pirates returned... He also publicised his intention to leave... maybe Magnus carried some pride from the previous attack and promised himself he wouldn't let it happen again. He seems like a guy I'd like to have met, maybe another time Magnus, take peace, rest easy 🍻

Sounds like he was robbed - like the pirates saw the gofundme and targeted him again. The family should his bank accounts and transfers from the GFM proceeds. How terrible. Sailors should be allowed firearms to protect themselves from pirates. All the criminals have guns - potential victims must be able to protect themselves.

@@WaveformV1.0 Few countries, particularly the safe ones, will allow you to import guns and keep them on your yacht. You would have to hand them over to the relevant authorities until you leave.
