can anyone explain what miller meant by the orange peel quote please??

hope - I interpret it as a metaphor of Willy and his deluded mind. He believes he is so valuable to the company he is employed in and that he holds it together (like the peel does with an orange). He is saying that you can’t just use me and throw me away as if I am useless to you; however, he is useless to Howard and this is made clear by Howard telling Willy ‘He’s been meaning to do this for a long time’ when firing him. This shows Willy had a job out of pity not need/skill. That’s just my view though ☺️

Laura Davis that’s great! thank you. at least i have one interpretation on it. i did read before that miller may have used it ironically. because that’s exactly what you do. you eat the orange and throw away the peel. so miller may be showing how deluded willy is because that technically makes no sense. thanks for the video and your response!

I had to find a song for my English leson about this play and had to have the song lyrics I couldn't find it so I typed it out for people who want it here it is: Act 1 work a lifetime to pay off a house. You finally own and there is nobody to live in it. Population is getting out of control. The competition is maddening. Lotta dreams and plans. I don’t know what the hell I am working for. What the hell was her name? It's a punching bag! I know that all I've done is to waste my life. your hair got so grey. In the ‘Death of a salesman’, by Arthur Miller, there are two acts to reach the climax of the tragedy of a small man in a big world. lost in his head. Gonna’ get that A on this great play that I read. They got the biggest ads of any of them! The girl I was with tonight is engaged to be married in five weeks. there’s more people! That's what’s ruining this country! I won't have you mending stockings in this house! A small man can be just as exhausted as a great man. Ben, how should I teach them? He's been trying to kill himself. How can I mention it to him? Act 2 You can't eat the orange and throw the peel away - a man is not a piece of fruit! I never got anywhere because you blew me so full of hot air he’s only a little boat looking for a harbour. You end up worth more dead than alive. I’d like to buy some seeds. The jungle is dark but full of diamonds. When the mail comes he’ll be ahead of Bernard. Why didn’t anybody come? Dad - I let you down. thank you for the song Laura
