The Exo Marine is a Warhammer 40,000 design icon of a bygone age. A single metal miniature released in 1988 has created a lasting imprint on the imagination of 40K universe fans.
Mark Louis Spark - Sparks Artifex - was one such fan of the Exo Marine, so much so that he lovingly re-imaged the design as part of his seminal animation work "Death of Hope". In this video please join me for a special model unboxing where I'll share the first look at one of just 30 miniature examples made for supporters of Project Tetrarch.

The idea of printing the very asset that is used in a digital medium is fascinating. Something feels uniquely authentic about that.

There was a fierce battle raging in the jungle between the Imperial Guard and an ork warband. Eventually, they were running so low on supplies that everyone only had the ammo on their person left. Gathering his courage, one of the guardsmen floated the idea of a tactical advance towards the home base to their commissar. "Sir, at this rate, we will have no ammo left in an hour." "Don't be ridiculous, soldier! All you need is your faith in the Emperor." The commissar looked at him disapprovingly, raised his pistol at a charging ork, and yanked it up while shouting BANG! To everyone's surprise, the ork fell to the ground, unmoving. Emboldened, the soldiers started imitating him as they ran out of ammo, and the orks kept falling. Eventually, they were really getting into it, even tossing rocks as grenades, and the battle was soon turning in their favor. Suddenly, though, the orks broke through the "fire" and trampled the guardsmen. Before he lost consciousness, the last thing he heard was the orks' chanting. "IMMA TANK IMMA TANK IMMA TANK"

Thanks. I have indeed, seen quite a few people over the last year or so who've bought them. They look pretty decent, and I like the nod to not just Exo Marine but also the Nocturne Pattern Armour from the short story "Deeds Endure". Not mega cheap, but I've heard good things about TB's quality.

It is in fact the price holding back my purchase. I doubt GW will make that pattern of terminator armour any time soon as we are still waiting for key releases such as despoiler units. So perhaps I should pull the trigger and treat myself

Thanks Iron Bomb 👍 Chatting with Mark on the design, he said this is the first miniature he'd done which kinda blew my mind. He printed them all himself as well, and 3D printing at scale can be a lot of work. It was a complete surprise to me when he sent it over. Will do a video on the assembled model in the next few weeks.

It's no wonder they are "very similar" since they're literally based on the exactly same concept design. He didn't create something completely unique. There wasn't intention to create new terminator design. So your comment just seems like completely unnecessary outer circle level "criticism". This was more about symbolism and way how to say thank more than anything else.

Very similar isn't the same though is it? 😉 Mark's fine and the 30ish minutes of DoH animations are a towering achievement that he in effect gifted to the fans for free.

I love everything about this. That scene always stuck with me when we see this monster walking the deck of the ship and the camera is shaking. We even get the size comparison between the regular Space Marines and the Culchisian Cultists walking with them. Mark did so much work on DoH it's ridiculous. I caught him on stream, maybe a year ago, and I asked about that scene. Just basic stuff, and asked about the Cultists. I said they really interested me and that the language they're speaking sounds so good it's almost like Dothraki like its actually made up. He ends up telling me they're speaking Culchisian and that they're Chaos Cultists like Word Bearer rejects. He said he wanted it to sound real so looked up a ton of info and researched languages and basically made a rudimentary and very simple Culchisian. All for that one little scene of them walking the decks. He also wrote lore for basically every character on screen; he told me since I asked about black shield World Eater fighting beside the Ultramarine Captain. He said he wrote a bunch of lore for them and I believe he even said that it's that Captain in particular who is hanging in the fighting pit and missing half his body and face. That is serious dedication.

Mark "burned out" because of his inability to take critique about his short film. He's a talented 3d modeler no doubt about that. Animation and visual story telling are something he could work on, which is evident in his short. His main weakness is his ability to communicate effectively with the community.

@leakycheese it's very difficult bit when a shorts relies on visual story telling and there's a lot going on it takes away from from the whole piece. Take astartes, what's going on is very clear, we aren't told what's happening but some space marines have showed up and they a boarding a ship. In his piece its set on a ship, looks great but there is a lot happening at a fast pace Then we transition to an arena fight l, there are some people in cells and then there is some sort of dialogue. Hopefully that makes sense.

I've been following your channel for quite some time, and I see that you're rather fearless when it comes to resin, GW/FW or otherwise. In your opinion, is there anything to be afraid of when it comes to resin miniatures or is it mostly the case of "(few) bad cases being given a bad press by constantly being talked about". Who's your favourite resin manufaturer?
@leakycheese
@leakycheese 11 ай бұрын
I suppose a lot of my apparent "fearlessness" with regards to resin models comes from experience gained over many years of miniature model making. In terms of resin models, there are three things to think about before getting into the medium: 1. Manufacturer: almost all resin models available today are hand cast using silicone moulds (or semi-automated versions of that process). Items made this way are always subject to production inconsistencies and there's always a risk that you get a bad cast that's slipped through quality control. More advanced injection moulding techniques give okay to poor results - Citadel's infamous Finecast and Prodos Game's now-defunct Aliens vs. Predator range are examples. Forge World is where I have most experience, and kits of the last 6-6 years have been generally good and a marked improvement on the proceeding 5 years. Victoria Miniatures are also good and Anvil Industries have an enviable reputation for casting quality. From my knowledge, the very best resin models come from Adam Poots' Kingdom Death range, and are a paradigm of the quality that can be achieved in the medium. My favourite would be Forge World, and this opinion is shaped as a mixture of the product quality and the designs being depicted (the latter being their great strength). 2. If you thinking of trying a resin model, pick something easy to start with - I used to recommend the Forge World dreadnoughts but most of these are now out of production (Custodes still available) so would suggest either one of those or a small vehicle like the Sabre or Pallas. If you are an experienced modeller who has put together some hard plastic kits then perhaps be more ambitious, but the larger vehicles range from quite to very challenging and aren't the best starting point. As you'll know from my reviews, I talk about how I found the build experience and the issues I had to overcome so it's very case-by-case basis. 3. Tools - resin modelling requires a few specialised tools, and at the very least a razor saw, wet sanding sticks, pin vice drill bits and wire plus superglue are needed. As well as the various build demos I've done over the years, I made a video specifically talking about the tools I use - see my How-to an modelling playlist. Hope this helps 🙂
