Or make it at home. Steak is not an upscale food. It is very easy to do at home on a $150 grill with some charcoal. Or in a cast iron pan. I have had very few steaks at restaurants better than I can make at home.

Want to know a weirdly good steak? Waffle House. According to my father and sister, it’s not the best cut of meat but it is tender and well seasoned. They said this after going to an expensive steakhouse. Granted all steak is generally about how you cook it, but they like their steaks medium well and Waffle House could so it without making shoe leather.

You can out cool Out back Steakhouse at home, but you're not out cooking a trained chef at a proper high end steakhouse who does this all day, every day, and has ingredients and techniques you aren't even aware of. As the other person commented, up your game out of the average places and try some high end ones and you'll enjoy a new appreciation for a really good steak.

My local Texas Roadhouse is routinely the busiest restaurant in the area, and that entails a lot of places. They even bought the closed Long John Silver's next door and tore it down just for the additional parking. They're not hurting for business at all.

Yeah, that, but for some, like me, I just got....well, bored of them, so went to 'unique' locations, some local, others, well, while rare, I was actually willing to drive 50 too 100+ miles to try some location I saw when I became a diver, or, just go to a Publix or some place called 'Hitchcock's' it's a grocery place in Palatka, FL that often has really thick steaks, affordable, go to another place that's....not sure if it's a local chain or not, but called the 'tea and spice exchange' buy some of their blends and just cook at home.

In regards to that robbery that was mentioned in this video with the Ponderosa manager being killed (Vanessa Wells), after reading court documents of a 2019 appeal, apparently the proceeds from the robbery were $275, which the two killers (Lozier and Widener) spent the next day at the mall on a movie and food. They then went on with their days afterwards for 5 months as if nothing happened until they were caught. Widener, the one believed to be the gunman, was released in 2016. Lozier, at the time of the appeals documents, had a anticipated release date of March 2024 (so would be out by now). It's incredibly vile for any person to be murdered but it's just even more extra vile when you picture the image of them sitting down eating food and watching a movie that they deemed was worth someone's entire life. Absolutely vile. The fact that either would be shown mercy in regards to lessening their jail times is despicable.

Here in Thailand, Sizzler has remodels their restaurants and they look pretty nice. In Asia beef is not the preferred meat so upscale steak houses are extraordinarily expensive in a food environment where excellent food is available way below typical western prices.

You’ve made a mistake with the premise. The title should have been “The Death of the American Chain Steakhouse.” The chain versions got squeezed between ordering steak at casual dining chains on the low end, like at an Applebees or Olive Garden, and a non-chain, upscale steakhouses on the high end. Starbucks, incidentally, is being squeezed the same way, by cheaper coffee from McDonalds, Dunkin’ Donuts & 7-11-type convenience stores on one end, and boutique, unique mom & pop coffee shops on the other.

The Texas Roadhouse in my town is always packed at dinner time,especially on weekends. I am not sure how though, all steak houses are too damn expensive now and you can grill up your own equal foods for less. Sure you have to do it yourself but its way less expensive. I do love Texas and Logan's steak houses and even remember Ryan's when it was a steakhouse,back in the day.

Steakhouses cook mostly simple things that could easily be replicated at home for much cheaper. Far better value for the money to go to an Asian restaurant where most of the dishes involve unique produce and tons of pantry ingredients that would be expensive to buy up front and sometimes a pain to shop for.

Dan Blocker didn’t retire. He died before Bonanza finished its run. But his death contributed to the demise of the show. He started Bonanza steakhouses with a couple of business partners. We had one and loved it. It’s now a Japanese restaurant. Ponderosa was started by Lorne Greene and his business partners. Fun fact, Lorne Greene was a Canadian citizen. I still love to watch Bonanza in reruns, but it’s hard to believe they are all gone. Dan Blocked was so young when he died, early 40’s I believe and the show was his first major acting gig. Best Western on tv hands down.

I enjoyed watching Dan on Bonanza. Fun fact is that I heard he was a nudist like I am. He died during gallbladder surgery. Another fact is that vegans have lower rates of gallbladder disease and the ischemic heart disease that the high levels of saturated fat in steaks and other red meats contain. I used to love the Outback, but their quality really deteriorated a few years ago. This keeps happening with restaurants: They get a bunch of regulars who go there out of habit, and then profit off of return visits until people notice. Then rebuild with a new name, and repeat.

Chiming in to reiterate two things that have already been said repeatedly: steakhouses charge a premium, and a lot of us prefer cooking our own to our individual tastes. Me? I've got a pot roast that's going in the crockpot in a few hours, but for some reason I'm craving a decent steak. I group steakhouses into three categories: big chain, big budget, and buffet. I regularly ordered burgers and chicken sandwiches from the "big chain" Longhorn next to my former employer, as they were sadly the cheapest option in the area, but their steaks were just too pricy for me, so of course I'm not going to the likes of "big budget" Ruth's Chris. The buffet, with their cheap but still tasty all-you-can eat steak and more is my preferred option. Golden Corral seems to be doing okay, but I miss the heyday when Ponderosa, Bonanza, Western Sizzlin', Ryan's, Old Country, and other restaurants were thriving.

We've got a Texas Roadhouse and it does decent business, but it's also right by the interstate. Locals all go to the independent ones around town which are all better. If you want kitschy fun, there's Pinnacle Peak, which has a whole faux western town around it, an antique carousel and a stunt show a couple times a night. If you just want a good meal, there's a dozen other options.

I live in Los Angeles. And at least here there is no death of the steakhouse. There are tons of steakhouses here. And they’re all thriving. They’re always crowded. You have to make reservations and advance. So if they are dying, it’s not here. So I’m not sure what you’re referring to. I think it’s an exaggeration to say that there’s a death of the American steakhouse.

I will say Outback practiced consistency until the bitter end. The first time I was served a piece fatty gristle masquerading as a filet, I thought it was a fluke. But it was the same at every Outback, every time I tried afterwards, until I just gave up.

I recall the popularity of Sizzler and Ponderosa in the 70's-90's as a child and young adult. In Chicago we had a famous steak house named Ronnie's. The burgers were really good.

When I discovered Cooking KZbin in general and Guga Foods in particular, it was game over for the brewpub near my place. Why pay $30 for a mediocre top sirloin or NY strip when I can spend $12 at Safeway for a choice-grade ribeye (or a bit more for a better quality steak, but ribeye's got plenty of good fat even at choice level) and make it perfect at home? Those videos (and some practice) taught me how to do it right every time.

As painful as the cost to eat out has become, at least it's helping us recover some of these atrophied skills in the collective consciousness. Paying for the overhead of an entire building and trained staff plus the cost of food that expires and needs to get dumped is not sustainable at the level of market saturation we reached before the pandemic. But that's the nice thing about markets, they'll always figure out where equilibrium is.

The last time I was in a steakhouse, was probably 40 years ago. They sold cheap cuts of physically and chemically tenderized meat. You were way better off buying a steak from a grocery store and grilling it yourself. The salad bars were disgusting. Don't get me wrong, we probably ate at one pretty frequently, but after a while it became... old, and we just stopped going. Maybe they got better, but we found other places to eat...

My best friend lives in Como Mississippi, the amount of google reviews for the steakhouse on the tiny main street outstrip the population. Absolute amazing place, good service, great atmosphere and a fantastic dessert. Most chain steakhouses can't beat the energy the tiny places put out.

In Russia, you can’t really find steaks in a normal meat stall, and only imported steaks in a regular supermarket. I would buy roasts and cut my own steaks when I lived there from 2013-15.

Brazilian-style steakhouses were brought into existence quite by accident. A roadside restaurant suddenly received an unexpected flood of customers and the place's owner - somewhat baffled by the situation - decided to serve his patrons by directly cutting chunks of roasted meat from the spits at the tables. People actually liked the innovation and started demanding for more. And the rest is history.

Unless its one of those "places to be seen" type of steakhouses, I can cook WAY better steak on my Weber than what Outback, Logans, etc offers. Publix has really good cuts of steak, but its something I don't eat very often so I don't mind paying the premium. Also I don't really like the pretentious vibe of the "places to be seen" types of restaurants, some of my favorite dining establishments are total hole in the wall places.

I stopped patronizing steakhouses because they either serve your steak raw or burnt to a crisp. Many of them actually print on the menu a legal warning that you can't refuse to pay for the steak if it's overdone. Eff that! I tell them exactly how I want it but the result is always bloody or hard as a rock. One chain actually defines the different degrees of cooking a steak on the menu and illustrates this with photos of both the outside and inside; nevertheless, you can point to a photo on the menu and say "I want it this way", but they won't give it to you like the photo. It has literally been many years since I've had a satisfactory steak in a restaurant. The last two steaks I had were at Western Sizzlin in Wilson NC and Texas Steakhouse in Rocky Mount, and both times the steak was cooked until it couldn't even be cut with a knife. NEVER AGAIN! (Don't even get me started on Golden Corral.)

Dan Blocker never retired He died during the run of Bonanza. Bonanza started in 1963, Blocker died in 1972.

Bonanza was on the air from 1959 to 1973. The producer considered asking Pernell Roberts to rejoin the show, but decided it was time for that long running western to come to an end.
