The original version of this movie, with Peter Ustinov, is one of my all-time favorites. This version is just "okay", but like you said, it's filmed so beautifully and is such a nice change of pace from the usual blockbuster movies, that it's nice to spend a relaxing evening at the theatre with this being shown.

@@megamikethemovieman The original gives the somewhat complicated story more room to breathe. We get much more time spent with Jackie (Mia Farrow) and understand the intense hatred she has for her former best friend. Linette is definitely someone who would rub a lot of people the wrong way; she's really rotten in the original! All the suspects have much more time to show their anger at her. Yes! I share so many of your feelings, especially just being able to get a big budget murder mystery. It inclined me to love the movie especially and I personally felt it was stronger than Murder on the Orient Express. We need more of these types of movies greenlit, and I hope Branagh tackles more Christie canon in this style (I'd love to see And Then There Were None from him, and The Mirror Crack'd; with the latter I do wonder if that property is why he's said he's moving into Marple next). I personally liked most of the changes made to the original novel--they strengthened the themes and made the investigation/red herrings stronger imo (though I know many Christie stans would disagree with me). I've seen some Gal Galdot hate but honestly she fit the Linnett of the book well, I thought. She has to play the razors edge of a beautiful, rich woman who is... thoughtlessly and carelessly callous at turns but is not an evil or "bad" person, and in fact has many positive traits. Nailed it, imo (whereas the ITV Poirot bungled that character I feel). And the many other super strong performances outweighed any potential weakness there... the weakest link, honestly, for me was the unfortunate casting of Armie Hammer. Even without the scandal, I thought he was a weak Simon Doyle, though it's also very clear they carefully edited out scenes with him in it; it's a more present and major character in the book.
@nikitamohanan21242 жыл бұрын
Seriously??? Most people thought it was predictable. With Murder on the orient express I don't think most people didn't expect that ending. Also after a Knives Out getting an Oscar nomination and knives out 2 coming this year as well on Netflix...this movie just seemed a bjt disappointing
@AlexaDonne2 жыл бұрын
@@nikitamohanan2124 Oh, it's incredibly predictable. The book is, too--or was for me, possibly in part b/c I knew the movie's casting already. Casting 100% messed up and I suspect Chris's note about a shot that lingered is related to this as well. I'm fine that people were disappointed w/ this but I personally thought it handled the book well--and it's not my favorite Christie book at that. MotOE didn't come together for me as DotN did overall as a film--my big thing isn't "can I guess the ending" but "how do all the performances, tension, beats, themes and story come together as a whole." And I prefer this one, especially thematically. ITV's Poirot did a much better job at MotOE whereas Branagh bested that series w/ his DoTN, imo. YMMV.

Murder on the Orient Express has a star studded cast, but apart from Daisy Ridley, Josh Gad, and Michelle Pfeiffer, none of the rest really stood out to me. Here, while Mackey is a standout, but Bening, Brand, Letitia, Bateman, Okonedo, Gadot etc.... all have scenes where they make a strong impression.

Armie Hammer is an actor I have adored from Lone Ranger and Man from U.N.C.L.E., but with his recent "cannibal" scandal, my opinions on him changed a bit. Thus why I am so shocked t see him in a film so soon after the incident. I still enjoyed his performance as I always do, but I am not sure if I can look past the weird incident. Outside world stuff aside, the movie really makes you think like a detective by seeing all the clues left through out the film. You feel like you are on the cruise with them, and I even felt Jacqueline's envy on a personal level. Seeing Hammer's character switch to fast to Gadot within a few weeks was such a dick move, I was practically cheering her on to have her revenge (though the ending kinda ruined that). I don't know why people don't like the film. In my books the plot makes sense, the theme is very glamorous and scandalous, and I was glued from beginning to end. One gripe I do have though is why doesn't Hercule laugh like he did back at the Express? Such a weird and quirky trope, its sad not to see it return in this film. Anyway, all I have to say thus far. Thoughts anyone? Edit: So I looked into it. As it turns out, Armie Hammer has been shown less and less through out the trailers after the first one. There was even a debate weather the movie should be released at all. They could have either edit him out or replace him with a different actor; but since Hammer plays one of the main characters with so much screen time and plot relevance, they have to keep him in and take his least important scenes out. Hammer is a genuinely fine actor and it is a real shame the total shock he has brought on himself. Hopefully whatever he decides to do in the near future is for the better not only for himself, but for the people he has affected so negatively on.

A month before This came out I stayed at a British themed inn, each room named after an English author and the suites after particular books. They mixed up our reservation and ended up in the Death on The Nile room as a happy accident. It was very Egyptian themed through English lens. The bathroom tile was chosen to emulate papyrus reeds, a "Vacation to Egypt this Winter" poster which was lifted right out of the book in which there were 2 copies in the room in 1 or the 2 decorative book stacks. The inn was next door to my favorite 1 screen art deco theater (they added a back lot so it's kind of a 2 screen theater) and I was disappointed that they didn't do some cross promotional thing possibly even with the other twee establishments in the area, and that that theater isn't even playing Death on the Nile. The multiplex down the road had it, but it's not the same.

I need more mysteries that maybe fit more with Clue than they would a gritty thriller (though those are great in their own right). I want a little more camp and theatrics in film again. Not in the mood and definitely not meta... just like to sometimes get over the top without surreal. I trust you a lot Chris, you even enjoy more obscure and odd and experimental stuff I adore. I'd love to hear you explore Gregg Araki filmography. He's the weirdest filmmaker that seems to work on some notable TV stuff and his own indie weirdness, but few seem to know him in the mainstream, and once you watch one of his original films you know why, but still question how with so much WTF factor.

For us Brits, Hercule Poirot will always be David Suchet. If you haven’t seen the ITV series Poirot, then you should definitely watch it. The show is on a TV budget, but the cast is so good, and the world feels real and lived in. You will also see a number of famous British actors before they became famous.

Agree that Branagh really kills as Poirot. It was also beautifully shot and the cast all did (mostly) fine with their roles. The only nitpick to me was the central story as I think Gadot played Linnet a little too nice (or was written too nice) for basically stealing her best friends lover. I think they needed more motivation than "she was in love" as a woman as beautiful as her would have so many suitors, why she would chose an out of work cad who her BFF loved demanded more of an explanation as to her character (or lack thereof). Her fiancé being able to pull that off given Linnet's looks also demanded a little more explanation. I never usually argue for making a movie longer, but a little more set up or showing why should would do this to her friend and why Hammer's character would also do this would have made the plot a little better in retrospect.

This was the first book of Agatha Christie I ever read, and they changed the characters and their relationships so much to fit Hollywood’s view that it is almost unrecognisable from the book. The arrogance to think they can make a book written by a master and ‘improve it’ astounds me... I was really looking forward to seeing one of my favourite books on screen.

That is completely spot on. They did not make Death on the Nile and did something completely different. What we just seen were the indulgences of writers and producers.

I watched this movie in theater and I really damn enjoyed it. Not as much as Orient Express but still a great film. Really, I thought I had the plot figured out after a kinda obvious hint but at my surprise the plot did have some surprises that I really didn't expect. That was awesome! I loved that. I am SO DOWN for more Agatha Christie adapts... Saying from you that this is again on a moving vehicle... Is there a murder mystery on a plane? And an actual big ship? A bus? Oh my, I had never seen nor read any of Christine's work or prior adaptations. I've only seen the new Orient Express and this one. As one who loves films and the process of filmmaking and the art of that... Death on the Nile and its prequel are much needed movies. We need those.

Good review! I liked this version, but the one Peter Ustinov did is much better. It had a great cast also: Peter Ustinov, Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Maggie Smith, Jack Warden, George Kennedy, David Niven, Angela Lansberry, Jane Birkin, and Olivia Hussey. After watching that one and "Evil Under the Sun", which also had a star cast, I will always think of Peter Ustinov as the "Official" Poirot.

I have seen multiple adaptations of all the Agatha Christy stories that have been made so the plot can't surprise me. I will judge it on the acting and the way it looks. I bet I'll like it. I agree with Chris that Knives Out was particularly awesome because it gave me something new but I will have a soft spot for Christy's stories always. There was an episode of Dr Who ( a British show about time travelling) in which the Doctor tells his human companion that Agatha Christy will be in print for thousands of years and I thought that was a need idea.

The biggest unsolved mystery of the film is why did simon decide to kill Linnet. He could have just taken the easiest method, which was to simply dump her. Instead, Simon decided to come up with a complex method of killing her and covering his tracks.

As someone who grew up watching all the Hercule Poirot movies and tv series with David Suchet (who as an actor practically became Poirot), seeing Branagh take on this famous, well described Agatha Christie character and comletely changing everything characteristic about him, makes me feel sad. TBH i give this movie 10/10 it was a banger of a movie.. after seeing all the reviews i watched it with low expectations, i was captured the moment the movie started, from the beautiful music, too the dancing.. and i can name a lot more.. sometimes movie review can have you thinking one way then when you see it yourself you feel completely different.. soo many sad moments and i love the fact they took their time to build a moment with majority of the characters.. something they sort of lacked in the first movie.. all in all both movies were GREAT.. but this 1 one was a homerun in MY opinion.. excited for a haunting in venice now :)

Great points about the familiar feel of things. It's easy to forget that Agatha Christie was blazing a trail that this genre is still following. If this movie feels derivative, it's only because they're being faithful to the source material that everyone else has been copying for decades.
@DragonHeart6132 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Branaugh has been really killing it with his Agatha Christie adaptations. Of course no Christie adaptation will ever surpass the iconic Poirot tv series starring David Suchet but Branaugh has definitely put his own unique touch to Miss Christie's legendary Poirot mysteries. I really really enjoyed his adaptation of arguably the most famous Poirot story of them all in Murder on The Orient Express although Branaugh's Poirot's mustache looked so wrong as was the Kung-Fu aristocrat (I don't ever recall Miss Christie including Martial Arts in any of her books) & also did not like changing the character of Arbothnot from a soldier to a doctor as it changed his connection to one of the victims quite a bit but other than those 3 negatives, really loved Branaugh's take on Murder on The Orient Express but I think his adaptation of Death on The Nile might have been even better, such a great adaptation as well and just as Orient Express had an phenomenal all-star cast so did Death on The Nile, loved everyone in that film.....well almost everyone in DontheN, never been a fan of armie hammer as an actor and now with some of the stuff that he's said & done & been accused of makes me dislike him as a Human Being as well. That said, I love both of Branaugh's Poirot movies. I hope that Branaugh gets to make more Poirot films. I think he should adapt next either The Mysterious Affair at Styles, The ABC Murders, Death in The Clouds, Five Little Pigs or Appointment with Death as I think that any of those 5 Poirot stories would be perfect for Branaugh to adapt for the big screen. I'd also like to see Branaugh produce a series of Miss Marple films as well.

I guessed the ending because while I'm sure Christies ending was great at the time it came out it is now a common trope but that was fine, I enjoyed just looking at a beautiful movie filled with some beautiful people and scenery.
