In cases that are 100% proven guilty, they should have a death date given. Not let them live on death row, breathing, eating, contact with other humans. They took the life of an innocent, theirs should be taken just as quickly as they murdered the victims.

There are people who were "proven guilty" who were actually innocent. Jonathan Fleming was "proven guilty" of a murder that took place in New York City when he was actually in Orlando, Florida at the time. It was very easy for the prosecution to "prove" Fleming guilty when the Orlando police withheld a phone receipt that was in Fleming's pocket when he was arrested. The Innocence Project used DNA evidence to get people--some who have been sentenced to death--exonerated.

Maybe it hasn't changed the victims lives for the worst. Maybe they were better off dead since they it was a simple mistake. What about ones that murder inside prison? They are already in there for serious crimes and yet the commit a higher offense incarcerated?

@@joannemcfadden6405: No, that's not always true. Many who have faced a firing squad did not die instantly. The are few methods of dying which actually do result in immediate death. But if the standard you're seeking is an instant death here are a few sure-fire methods you might want to endorse in the future. 1. Exploded. All that is required is about 5lbs of C4. A vest similar to those suicide bombers often use would work instantly. Here one second, vapor the next. We could send all death penalty prisoners out with a really big bang. One downside, though, is the cleanup. You know, bits of this and that flung through the air in all directions at speeds faster than sound. Now that's a major clean up project. 2. Crushing. No, I not talking about setting a large heavy object on top of the condemned. I'm talking about dropping a ridiculously heavy object on the condemned that has allowed to freefall from above for 20 feet or so. Imagine, if you will, the prisoner is walked out and restrained in a face up prone position. He or she has been blindfolded and a hood place over the head. The surface bound to is a concrete pad with a large, thick steel plate bolted to it. Above the spot were the soon to be 'squashed-like-a-bug prisoner has been placed is a 100 ton flat-bottomed object. Upon the Warden's order the object is released. Instant bug goo. No that's immediate. That's instant. That's a clean up requiring a sponge and a bucket. Need more examples of instant, immediate ways the government can take lives? I can come up with more if necessary. Then again, maybe we should forego this barbaric notion of justice and accept that what we are really talking about is revenge or retribution. And here's another argument for why this should become a thing of the past: no matter how quickly we take a life we cannot reverse the act once carried out. Our criminal justice system is simply too imperfect to risk handing down sentences that cannot be reversed, should the system be proved once again to have gotten it all wrong.

Actions have consequences these people are not the victims the people they killed are the real victims. The criminals had a choice and they made it in choosing the time of someone else's death and the fact that our legal system allows them to live many years after their crime is a flaw in our system in absolute cases of murder.

While I oppose the death penalty- mostly because there is a chance that an innocent person would be sentenced to die- I am inclined to agree with the lady in this- if the death penalty is absolutely necessary they should bring back the firing squad. I'm pro death penalty as well. However we need to do it cheaply and quickly. In Japan you get 1 appeal so use it wisely or your toast. I think the appeals process in America is too long and that's the real "cruel and unusual punishment". The methods also need to be cheap and effective no botching, up to 10% of lethal injections take over 30 mins now because all of the drugs. They need to use the firing squad or guillotine instead, they are a lot cheaper/quicker and can get the execution line moving again.

and them possibly making a mistake + executing a innocent person is the rub. Me personally as Ive gotten older I think I would rather the death penalty go away because you put a guy 19, 20, 21 years old when the crime was committed + 20, 30 years later you're now finally ready to carry out the sentence and I see kids when they committed the crime now guys and women who are no longer that same person. I mean you do some really stupid things as a young person and some of us maybe we're lucky that we didn't end up in prison. Now granted maybe we didn't do horrific murders but maybe got into a fight, you hit someone they fall + hit their head + die and whose to say you don't end up on death row. Mostly poor, under educated people end up on death. So I see people who are no longer what they were when they committed the crime and even if they killed me I don't want anyone to get put to death in my name, I just don't. and if we insist on keeping the death penalty it can only be for the most horrible crimes, killing kids, cops, multiple murders, and only on absolutely no doubt about guilt. Do all the DNA + other tests that you have this person in jail for, it's iron clad solid that they're the murderer and no longer than 2 years from conviction you carry out the sentence. But I gotta also say this, we are the only country in the west world who still have the death penalty.

You could make the opposite argument with the same logic. That life, even of a murderer, has little enough value that it can be justified to be taken away by the state. Hence having the death penalty shows the little value that we as a society place on life - that it *can* be used as a currency to pay for a crime.

If I knew 100% that the prisoner was guilty I would not have an issue. I really do think some people should be executed for their crimes. But I think there is an obvious class and race divide among death row inmates. A black man who murdered a white person will be more than likely sentenced to death while a white man who does the exact same thing will likely get life without parole. The only way I would accept life in prison, is if the prisoner was kept in his cell 23 hours a day. No cable TV in the cell, no access to drugs, conjugal visits, the right to get married and have children, enjoy special meals on holidays, access to the internet to converse with pen pals, no movie night, library or workshops, and no ordering from a commissary where you can purchase foods to heat up in your microwave. I'd rather watch the person who killed someone i cared about rot in prison for the rest of their life than be executed and be at peace, i want them to regret their actions every day for as long as possible and yearn to be free but be denied their freedom. Plus if i support that person being killed, i have no right to be upset that he took my loved ones life, either all life matters or none of it does. I cannot logically be angry about a killing and simultaneously support the killing of the person who did it. Plus there is always the chance that the person is actually innoccent and we cannot morally take someones life if there is even a 1% chance they aren't guilty.

Kawana R Hamilton The reason why executions are sometimes a necessary evil is to deter this type of behaviour period, and if you spare every person whom murders, OBVIOUSLY, they will be stupid ENOUGH, to even feel sorry enough to even try to let these heinous murderers out someday, also, that's why, lady, it's at the utmost, sometimes, very very necessary, alright!!!! I don't think that you would want a serial murderer to get life in prison whom rapes, molests, then kills woman and children, and stay for life in prison, would you, oh, and esp. a loved one of yours included in their count and have the luxury to stay in prison, would you, now that will be food for thought, for people whom want to be sorry for serial murderers, alright, that's why!!!!

@averyflannigan2506 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, the 17 year wait is less about waiting for the needle and more about making sure justice is served. If, by any chance, a prisoner on the death row was innocent, the generally 10~20 year leeway is meant to act as a safety net for those people and their lawyers. An estimated 4% of death row inmates are innocent yet only 1.6% are ever exonerated. Meaning, if you're innocent but you're condemned to death, you've got roughly a 60% chance of dying for crimes you didn't commit. Sure it's a long process and one that's far from perfect, but it's meant to save as many innocent people from being killed as possible. If the legal system tried to jump the gun and execute them after a few days, then... I don't envy the families of the wrongly condemned nor do I relish having to face them when 17 years later new evidence comes up proving their deceased loved one's innocence. Think of it this way - your tax payer dollars are potentially saving innocent lives :)

Mrs Boren is right: firing squad was found to be the most humane method of executiong with death occurring within 15 seconds. With lethal injection: when they did finally execute Kenneth Williams it took 13 minutes or so. Atleast one executioner from Virginian (who was interviewed in another documentary) preferred the electric chair to lethal injection. along with the difficulties of finding veins if the condemned was an intravenous drug user. the fact that pharmaceutical companies are refusing to supply the drugs used for lethal injections. finally there is the hypocrisy of making an execution look like a medical procedure.

If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. Love for Enemies 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[b] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Knowing that everyone moves on while they stuck in there. I think it's really sad that still in 2017 we're executing people. I definitely don't believe in it. I feel for the victims families but I am a believer that this execution doesn't make them feel any better. May the Lord have mercy on all of us.

@Ivelisse. Thanks. Punishment has to serve 2 main needs : it must give the perpetrator a guilty of insight that society does not allow these acts and has consequences. Secondly, it must give the victims a sense of justice. Revenge and retribution do not belong to it !! Far better would be, that work is done , so that the perp. can pay to he victims.. Cause if people have nothing more to loose : they act like it aswell...

That would be like saying stop caging people in jail to prove kidnapping is wrong. If holding people against their will is wrong then jailing them would be wrong using your stupid logic. It is killing people for no good reason that is wrong!!!

I support the death penalty not because I think it is a better punishment but because it costs a lot of money to keep the murdered alive than to just end their life. I would much rather the murdered to suffer a long painful death but it is pretty pointless to keep them alive for 50 years

That is a long time for a family to have to Waite for justice 17years , they should carry out these kind of setences 2 weeks after its been handed down ,better for all concerned
