That's because it is. Apparently the people behind this "prequel" were too lazy to make new sets and props (or likely blown the budget on that opening chase with the yellow Mustang) so they reused the same stuff from the 2008 movie and called it a day. Making things even more confusing is when the movie that came after (Inferno) ditched the setting in favor of a more Baja-style cross-country race, also replacing the cars.

The irony is that they actually screwed up the designs of some of the cars. If you compare the firebird and mustang used in the opening sequence of the first one to the ones used here you'll see that they used the later designs instead of the originals.

The original Death Race 2000 from 1975 is beyond campy as hell. Give it a watch and you'll see why. Same with the sequel Death Race 2050.

People say this movie was bad. It’s actually good. You gotta watch this one before you watch the first one then it will all make sense. This is how it started before Frankenstein died in the 1st scene of death race 1. Machine gun joe wasn’t in this one because big bill was there before machine gun joe in the first one. Some had different actors before death race 1 because some got let out. People criticize the actors and how it goes but don’t focus on the story of the movie

Maybe you right, but if it was before death race 1 then there's somes details that didn't work : if you look well in the first scene of DR1 you can see that the mustang don't have 2 minigun but 3 machine gun, and the fog lights are not on the same place; finally the front bumper of the pickup is different. And it missed a the scene of the drop of the rear shield in DR2

This how the old Frankenstein was born after the explosion he was taken to medical emergency and he was burned so they created the mask and that's how he became the old Frankenstein

Carl Lucas then set Niles York up as the new Frankenstein by the end of 3. The "Frankenstein" killed by Machine Gun Joe is York's Frankenstein.

Sooo the ending i gotta say. They fucked it up hard Franks car goes into the warehouse area, the gatling guns fall off but yet the scene where the car explodes its back, but not only that the wrong wheels are on the car when its flipped onto the roof, pause and you’ll see it. Its not the first movie i watched that has done that with a dummy car, the wangan midnight live action movie did it as well with replacing the crashed S30 ( modded ) with a stock S30 with the obvious wheels and wing missing
