Richard Christy never gets the credit he deserves for this album. One of the most complete drummers in metal. Prog, death, thrash, jazzy at time, his drumming here is simply innovative. Modern death metal super-technical, super-fast, blast-machine drummers should give a careful listen to this album. Oh and also props to Scott Clendenin (RIP) for his amazing bass lines and tone.

@@eugene8827 Christy joined Death in 96. He was present when the album was being composed and he came up with all that crazy stuff. Chuck wrote the songs but the details on drums are all Richard. He was determined to impress Chuck and get the gig, so he went with a "drum solo" mentality and Chuck liked it. I found something: SDM: How did you come up with the drum pattern for “Scavenger of Human Sorrow” off Death’s Sound of Perseverance”? Richard: From what I remember, Chuck played me the opening riff for the song and just told me to go crazy and come up with a technical drum pattern to fit the riff. I can’t remember exactly how I came up with the drum pattern for that song, but usually I just listen to a riff and start playing along with it until I find something that fits musically with it. Chuck was very open about all of my drumming ideas and he loved when I would come up with crazy drum patterns that would fit his riffs. I remember when we were working on Spirit Crusher, we were laughing at how crazy the drumming stuff was in the drum and bass break on that song, it was always fun writing music with Chuck and we had a lot of laughs writing and rehearsing together. sickdrummermagazine.com/the-drummers/sick-drummer-hall-of-fame/richard-christy-talks-all-about-death/

@@ItsNotaTuhmah The part that I linked is completely random and irrational for a drummer's point of view, now there are only 2 options, it was either composed by a non drummer composer (Chuck) or it was composed by drummer who is also a mental madman (Perhaps Christy is one, I don't know)...

Chuck was so desperate to end Death and move on to Control Denied, that this album's lyrics and themes, all the way down to the title represent his anger and disappointment. He felt that Symbolic wasn't marketed well, and he hated being strictly associated with Death Metal. But I have to say, this album is the bomb. It was a blast to listen to, and a perfect finale for Death. Symbolic was supposed to be the final album, and Perennial Quest did a great job and kicks a ton of ass, but A Moment of Clarity is a beautiful ending for probably the most dramatic Death album ever. This album was an awesome goodbye from Death and I can't overstate just how great a job they did with this unique, powerful, aggressive, and dramatic album.

Most of the songs and lyrics were written for Control Denied. Was originally recorded (demo) with clean vocals -,not Chuck singing. However record company wouldn't release it unless was a Death record, hence Chuck did the vocals - this album is essentially the first Control Denied record.

This album will continue to rule and reign throughout the time. it's simply beyond humanity. not every ear is blessed enough to capture the sound and not every mind is capable to comprehend what is actually happening there, beyond and below the insane riffage and drum play. Kudos to the ones who could understand this madness. who can pry the riffs open and access the soul of the music. if you do that you'll have an undying companion which you can rely on, for the rest of your days. DEATH rules! 🤘🎸🤘

If you love he technical feel and timing changes, I highly suggest you check out Carcass; Descanting the Insalubrious. Also, upon first listen; read the lyrics along with the music and you'll experience true theatrical horror music as it was intended; later named Heavy Metal. Carcass, much like Death created a subculture within the metal industry and forged an entire legion of bands that laid themselves bare by offering tribute, plagiarism and straight out copying. Carcass belongs on the same shelf as Death.

THE SOUND OF PERSEVERANCE [Lyrics] All songs written by DEATH, except 9 by JUDAS PRIEST Produced by Jim Morris & Chuck Schuldiner Recorded and mixed at Morrisound Studio, Tampa, FL in April - May 1998. Shannon Hamm - Guitars Richard Christy - Drums Scott Clendenin - Bass Chuck Schuldiner - Guitars and Vocals "For anyone with a dream, this album is for you!". - Chuck Schuldiner 1998 (c) NUCLEAR BLAST Records 01 - SCAVENGER OF HUMAN SORROW What pain will it take to satisfy Your sick appetite, go in for the kill Always in sight-prey The time always right-feast Feed on the pain-taste Sorrow made flesh-sweet Live how you want, just don't feed on me If you doubt what I say, I will make you believe Shallow are words from those who starve For a dream, not their own to slash and scar Big words, small mind behind the pain, you will find A scavenger of human sorrow, scavenger Abstract theory, the weapon of choice used by scavenger Of human sorrow, scavenger So, you have traveled far across the sea To spread your written brand of misery Always in sight-prey The time always right-feast Feed on the pain-taste Sorrow made flesh-sweet Live how you want, just don't feed on me If you doubt what I say, I will make you believe Shallow are words from those who starve For a dream, not their own to slash and scar Big words, small mind, behind the pain, you will find A scavenger of human sorrow, scavenger Abstract theory, the weapon of choice used by a scavenger Of human sorrow, scavenger 02 - BITE THE PAIN Look down at the body You may see no trace of wounds But in the eye, the eye of the beholder One cannot assume Not a drop of blood is drawn, but you know how it bleeds Beware of the sharp edged weapon called human being It is a shield of passion and strong will From this, I am the victor instead of the kill I will not feed your hunger, instead I bite the pain Looking not back, but forward, I bite down hard Try to cover up the trail of deceit And daggers spawned from your soul Acid, the tears of remorse flow in vain Too late for regrets save it for the next ill fated game It is a shield of passion and strong will From this, I am the victor instead of the kill I will not feed your hunger, instead I bite the pain Looking not back, but forward, I bite down hard 03 - SPIRIT CRUSHER It comes from the depths of a place Unknown to the keeper of dreams If it could then it would steal the sun and the moon From the sky, beware Human at sight, monster at heart Don't let it inside it could tear you right apart No guilt, it feeds in plain sight, spirit crusher Stay strong and hold on tight, spirit crusher Speaking in killing words The vicious kind that crush and kill No mercy, its pleasure to taste The blood that it bled When it's time to feed, to fulfill the need to Consume a breath, some will rise standing tall Breathing out all the breath from The voice of a soul Human at sight, monster at heart Don't let it inside it could tear you right apart No guilt, it feeds in plain sight, spirit crusher Stay strong and hold on tight, spirit crusher Speaking in killing words The vicious kind that crush and kill 04 - STORY TO TELL Drifting into the lives seep into the soul Where emotions hide Dark skies were beating me down with shadows Of deceit slashing at trust till it forever bleeds With doubt, with pain, with trust is pain When you think of me in your multidimensional mind Try and wash the "evil" from your mind and open it When you taste the truth, you will see like others before me To you, I am past, a story to tell, tell it You may think you own the end Take another close look at the script Of sadness etched in the book Dark skies were beating me down with shadows Of deceit slashing at trust till it forever bleeds With doubt, with pain, with trust is pain When you think of me in your multidimensional mind Try and wash the "evil" from your mind and open it When you taste the truth, you will see like others before me To you, I am past, a story to tell, tell it 05 - FLESH AND THE POWER IT HOLDS I told you once, but I will say it again When you live the flesh, it’s the beginning of the end It will take you in, it will spit you out Behold the flesh and the power it holds Passion is a poison laced with pleasure bitter sweet One of many faces that hide deep beneath It will take you in, it will spit you out Behold the flesh and the power it holds Touch, taste, breathe, consumed Deja-vu, already knew from the first encounter But know I know to let go of words to speak no more Like a wind upon your face, you can't see it, but you know it's there When beauty shows its ugly face, just be prepared Passion burns like fire carried by the wind The end of a time, a time to begin It will take you in, it will spit you out Behold the flesh and the power it holds It builds you up one way and tears You right back down, a time to begin the end of a time It will take you in, it will spit you out Behold the flesh and the power it holds Touch, taste, breathe, consumed Deja-vu, already knew from the first encounter But know I know to let go of words to speak no more Like a wind upon your face, you can't see it, but you know it's there When beauty shows its ugly face, just be prepared 06 - VOICE OF THE SOUL Instrumental 07 - TO FORGIVE IS TO SUFFER Throughout our time, a thought escapes us To enforce a word, no Holding on to pain, it may seem to some The easy way to say o.k., twist your knife a little deeper Words so sharp, actions dark hide the blade of the deceiver Enforce the words no more, be free Alone you might just find serenity To accept another day we choose To give away another piece of life To forgive is to suffer Once or twice is kind, three or four is blind It is not the end yet a way to begin The power of words, both good and bad The easy way to say o.k., twist your knife a little deeper Words so sharp, actions dark hide the blade of the deceiver Enforce the words no more, be free Alone you might just find serenity To accept another day we choose To give away another piece of life To forgive is to suffer 08 - A MOMENT OF CLARITY I would describe it as an invisible darkness Casting a shadow, a blinding black Guarded by hope, my soul is kept safe from the bloody claws Look to beyond, what vision lets me see Time after time, unneeded misery My dreams I own, no price for you I grip them tight and hope for sight Open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity Confusion gone, it's in your hands, your turn to ask why Life is like a mystery with many clues, but with few answers To tell us what it is That we can do to look ror messages that keep us from the truth Look to beyond, what vision lets me see Time after time, unneeded misery My dreams I own. no price for you I grip them tight and hope for sight Open my eyes wide to see a moment of clarity Confusion gone, it's in your hands, your turn to ask why 09 - PAINKILLER [Judas Priest Cover] Faster than a bullet, terrifying scream Enraged and full of anger, he's half man and half machine Rides the Metal Monster, breathing smoke and fire Closing in with vengeance soaring high He is the Painkiller This is the Painkiller Planets devastated, mankind's on its knees A saviour comes from out the skies in answer to their pleas Through boiling clouds of thunder, blasting bolts of steel Evils going under deadly wheels He is the Painkiller This is the Painkiller Faster than a lazer bullet, louder than an atom bomb Chromium plated boiling metal, brighter than a thousand suns Flying high on rapture, stronger free and brave Nevermore encaptured, they've been brought back from the grave With mankind resurrected, forever to survive Returns from Armageddon to the skies He is the Painkiller This is the Painkiller Wings of steel Painkiller Deadly wheels Painkiller

musical genius, lyrical genius, it astonishes me how people think metal is just screaming and hitting a guitar, yet 90% of the time they listen to people who can't sing, and use digital "instruments" to make up for a lack of talent, while guys like Death are given only a fraction of their credit when they could easily blow them out of the water through their technical ability on actual instruments. these guys fucking rule, Chuck may be gone but his impact on extreme metal will be felt for the rest of time

@HazyMan yeah, while most of death metal sings about gore and problems of the world and shit like that.Sincerely, lately I'd much rather prefer listening to some Migos than the ever complaining metal bands. And for the original comment, "actual instruments" are overrated and technical ability means shit when you can't write a catchy riff or a memorable hook. Stop being so goddamn stubborn and close minded in your singular musical cavity named metal and widen your horizons, even the top 40 has some pretty groovy stuff in it. That's why people can't stand metalheads, we're a bunch of arrogant ingrates who think music is something more than just fucking music, and metal is the one genre to rule them all, cause to be fair, metal stopped being relevant a couple of years ago.

This album is my favorite of all bands that I've heard in my life. Chuck is the a monster of a guitar and a composer as well. All his trajectory as a musician you can really understand the true meaning of musical evolution. The day I read in an old metal magazine that I signed called Rock Brigade (brazil) that he had died was a very painful impact, I imagined what would come after the Sound of Perseverance or even a new Control Denied album. R.I.P Chuck - thank you for letting us so much masterpieces. And Richard Christy is a F** Monster!

Ocean Sage That's true, but also a lot of commercial crap. And I noticed that some good bands that joined Nuclear Blast have changed their sound in favour of a more commercial one (easy-listening chorus, less complex songs, cliché videos). I think Nuclear Blast is the "pop" side of metal. Of course this doesn't apply to all bands in Nuclear Blast.

Ren well the problem is that this was going to be their last album regardless. Actually Symbolic was supposed to be their last album, but due to contractual obligations with their record company they had to made one more album with the name “Death”. All these songs from this album were supposed to be used on Chuck’s new project, Control Denied. There are even a couple demos of chuck singing some songs with clean vocals. If you want to listen more stuff similar to this check out The Fragile Art of Existence from Control Denied, actual last album Chuck ever made. It basically the same lineup as this album plus Tim Aymar on vocals.

Thanks again for the info, man.

Ren It is hard to adjust since it is pretty much Chuck’s music but without the vocals, so it takes away the death metal side, and it is 100% a progressive metal album. It will grow on you, the album has some bangers. Glad that you were able to listen to it, you’re welcome man!
