I'll never forget my deer drag again. Had the worse hand cramps that night after drag one out! I have 3 State Game Land deer and a lot of Federal Land deer. Now, everything is on private land. Glad you final scored on the Game Lands.

I'm glad that worked for you. I have another suggestion for areas like that. Find a tree to saddle from that's about 10 feet off the cut strip. Or if you want to hunt from the ground, get closer to the deer trail but sit a few feet in the brush and Infront of the biggest tree you can find. The bigger the better. If your close enough that you don't need binos to identify your target then you will have a lot less movement. Your just flicking a few cameras on to record and then the bow off safety and range. If they scent you, you will never see them anyway and if they don't then your in for the jackpot. Also, I feel your pain on public land and dragging a deer out. It just wears you out. However an e-bike will do wonders for you. It keeps your scent to a minimum going in. Gets you back to the truck quick to pick up your cart and then back to your harvest hopefully before a 2 or 4 legged creature claims it. Then you can walk beside your e-bike while it's hauling the deer+cart out for you. I strongly recommend an e-bike. Congratulations on your harvest.

Most of my hunting is in the river hills on public ground. The ground is very steep and gnarly. Getting those deer out can be very difficult so I made a battery powered deer cart. It runs off of an 18v cordless drill. I can disengage it and freewheel it when the cart is empty or engage it when needed.

Great Video, very good information. Learned my limits with my current crossbow this year. Shot a buck in the left hind quarter because he stepped and turned on the string release when I misjudged the distance. Thought the shot was 35 yards, ended up being more like 55 yards.

I have a game cart. I can hook it up to my 4 wheeler or where not allowed easily cart it in and out to get a deer out of the woods. It’s not made anymore ( NXT SHOT VERSACART) but it has held up great for about 21 seasons now. We used it in Illinois to get 2 deer out of the woods 2 weeks ago. You might consider getting one for next season. Although the NXTSHOT is discontinued, there are some decent models out there. I’d avoid anything that requires air in the tires. Just something to think about. Congratulations brother! Great hunt!

I haven't been hunting very long. I started late 2019 with a purchase of 30 acres here in Texas. I started with a crossbow. I always told myself I would not take a shot longer than 40 yards. This year was the first to harvest on my land. I was blessed with 2 doe ( 20 yards) and a buck (30 yards) MY FIRST BUCK!!! I will be turning 60 soon. lol. Well I did take a shot at a legal buck at 53 yards. Wow, it was like slow motion watching my arrow travel and hit the deer. The deer did not move or jump the string. ( I hunt out of elevated blinds) He darted off with the arrow in him. I tracked him for over 300 yards then blood trail was gone. I did find my arrow. I believe my shot was high and little back. For sure it was not a gut shot. I think this deer will survive . Lesson learned for me. At further distances your margin for error increases. I will not chance a shot like this again. There is no need to take a chance of injuring a deer and not able to recover. Im not an expert but the way the deer fell and shot placement looked like spine? I am glad you were able to harvest the doe. I enjoy all you videos and appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experiences . Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas.

Congratulations Rich on your public land harvest! My current formula for hitting deer before they can SIGNIFICANTLY move out of the way of the arrow has changed. Arrow velocity divide by 4 then divided by 3 will give you a good estimate of deer distance (in yards) for a successful shot. Examples Recurve 160/4/3 = 13 yards. Compound 300/4/3 = 25 yards. Modern crossbow 400/4/3 = 33 yards. This formula is based on 1/4 of a second for the deer to START to react. In other words, where is your arrow down range, in 1/4 of a second? Some use the "divide arrow speed by 10" formula, but I don't think it gives a deer enough credit for its ability to detect and react to the sound of a bow or crossbow.

I thought about tree saddle but at 74 yrs old and 6'2" and 285 I thought it would be too difficult. What do you think? It just seemed like to much work for a man my age and size. I was physically able to do it but it just takes so long to get set up, and it's a lot more gear to haul into the woods. Once you're set up it's pretty handy, but it still has its limitations for crossbow Hunters. I do have a video coming on that topic, I know I keep saying that lol.

Relatively new hunter - last season I shot with my compound at my first opportunity on a nice public land buck. He ducked my arrow at 35 yd not knowing I needed to shoot low like you say. This season, had the same shot at about 40 yd, and I'm convinced the buck this season ducked my arrow because there was no blood, and couldn't find the arrow. It's not easy..

enjoyed the video I watch your videos all day when I have time lol a lot I learned from you and I ended up buying the Excalibur micro mag 340 td pro model I wanted to go with recurve crossbow despite the fps against another crossbow I can get for the same price that's way faster but the thing is Excalibur ended up growing on me and I always looked at there crossbows and I really do love how they look against a compound crossbow sure I could've bought another compound crossbow but I wanted something that's just easy to maneuver around small compact and also powerful so I ended up going with the Excalibur and fps didn't really bug me with it as long as my crossbow shoots more than 300 fps I'm fine with it only thing I'm afraid of is limb breakage since I've seen how the micro 350 suppressors limbs went out on one of your videos it was pretty alarming I feel like these recurve ones have more tension and stress because there not compound crossbows I noticed that compound crossbows have less draw weight but keep that consistent fps above 400 or so and the Excalibur's since they are a recurve crossbow they have way more draw weight and less fps so I'm just worried about the limbs breaking on mine because of how much draw weight it has

One night there was another guy there. I talked to him for 5 minutes, wished him luck, he was great. I told him where my first doe went because I wasn't sure if I hit her and he was happy to walk in a different direction, really good about it. It turned out I missed her anyway after I saw the video. During rifle season there's a lot more people out there I'm betting!

I have this discussion all the time with people online about deer being able to duck a xbow, some guys are shooting them at 70-80 yards and think the deer cant outrun the arrow that's moving 400-500 fps. My bow is 425 and had deer duck it at 40 but got the spine shot. Some people even try to tell me the deer is dead before they here the shot...LOL...i guess xbows are faster than sound now...congrats on the deer bud....I am all tagged out for the season and so is the wife, but i go sit with my dad and help him out.

They certainly can duck the string, of course, but 425 ft per second is way better than 325 ft per second, for example. The speed really does make a difference. Not just in time, but in energy, also. Congrats on tagging out!

Hahahaha you got her done!!!!👍 She went down hard too it was hard for me to see on my cellphone but it looked like she was quartering away and you hit her in the neck area...I will check out the video again...I hunt upstate Pa on public game lands and we sit off ( we call them feeder fields game people make them for the hunters & deer they try to grow apple trees on them but the deer get to them first and destroy them) the feeder fields on established well used trails...in the summer the deer will let you almost walk up to them by hunting season they have already seen tons of hunters so they know and are on high alert...there is a big lake they like to hide down in near it where it's swampy hard terrain to walk and set up near...the deer trade back and forth from it... you'll figure Gameland hunting..... You looked beat up after dragging your trophy out...done it many many times the same way you did.... Great Hunt I use a Caldwell too to sight and use in a blind...for me sitting on the ground has cost me some really nice bucks both with guns & bows I use a tree seat that I strap to a tree not on the front but on the back side not directly behind that tree so I can see if I guessed right where the deer will come from....if I had one I might try your new saddle you'd be off the ground in a half or 3/4 standing position...I have a telescoping shooting stick... pretty slick ...it has a cuff you put your hand through that holds the bow...it has a brake that you set the tightness to it...the bottom/foot sits in its holder that goes around your waist so you can raise your bow or lower your bow and there is no arm stress... pretty cool concept

YES! Nice work Rich! By the way, thanks in part to you I landed my first ever crossbow deer here in VT a couple weeks ago. A doe on land I've hunted in the past unsuccessfully (I rattled in a huge buck on opening day one year but the primer on my 30-06 was a dud!). I used a similar setup as you, Scorpyd Aculeus rocking the Oracle X. Gave me the confidence to take the shot (from the ground as well). The scope is impressive, after sighting in at 31 and 50 yards, I walked back to 65 yards and shot where it told me: landed in my target inside an inch from POA. Of course I will not be taking shots much beyond 44 yards given it is shooting around 440 fps, but that is a fantastic increase over my bow options! Still time left in the season, I got a saddle as well (Eberhart Signature Series and will be using the JRB climbing system, developed by another Pennsylvania fellow no less!). My teenage sons are and will be eating well this winter thanks in part to you my friend. Appreciated!

The size and fit and feel are incredible, way easier to travel with, handles 500 grain Arrows with ease, and it really likes the Burris Oracle X scope because the enclosed Barrel raises it up to eye level perfectly. I've taken several deer anywhere from 60-90 yards with my scorpyd. All of them died within seconds. The argument against long archery shots is hypocritical at best. The main argument is "the deer has time to move before the arrow reaches it" Ok. The first question I have to ask is, are you ok with someone taking a deer at 20 yards with a longbow? That arrow takes 0.5sec to reach the target. My scorpyd crossbow in the SAME time can reach an 80 yard target with 4x the energy. Plus past a distance of 40 yards a deer reacting to a bow sound of any type is minimal at best. So in the end you have the same scenario, except the longbow has WAY less energy to penetrate and a much bigger likelyhood of jumping the string.

You make a great point, energy is lost in this discussion a lot of times. It is a ridiculous difference with modern crossbows. The rules that apply to traditional archery and compound bows even kind of break down with modern crossbows. It's just a fact. They really aren't the same equipment when we talk about energy.

Is it normal for the inside of your crossbow rail like on the sides to be scratched I’m guessing for it’s from the arrows ?

Every one of them is different but I can't say that mine gets scratched, at least not enough that I see, make sure the nocks are not doing it

Hunting Urban state game area is as tough of hunting as one will ever see in a life time. Take away bait and its nearly an impossible task. Hunting private land / farms with ag fields almost takes no skill set at all in comparison.I have done much of both. I consider this real hunting, one must do everything correct to even see any deer on these parcels of land.

I don't disagree with that advice, whatsoever, don't forget that years ago one of my early videos was how to always make a good shot, and that video had a whole section on Don't Shoot at alert deer!
