I played the 2nd edition Battletech in the late 80's and early 90's with the cardboard 2D miniatures. Played for hours at a time with mates from school, loved every minute. I play the Battletech PC game periodically and got to wondering whether the tabletop version is still a thing or not. So happy to see people still loving the game, the universe and the lore. This channel is great, wish I'd subscribed sooner. It's a blessing these days having so many people at your fingertips talking and playing the games we love. "Back in the day" you were stuck with only the people you lived near, and the internet really didn't exist like it does today. BBS was terrific, but pales in comparison to what we are spoilt with now. Thanks for a great video, will be checking out more content in the coming days/weeks/years :)

I understand that Alpha Strike is a BattleTech product designed for faster play, I just enjoy the chaos factor that is part of CBT. In CBT you can get a through armor crit that blows off limbs or even do a 'headshot' or miss with some weapons and hit with others. Alpha Strike is almost like repeat center torso hits at maximum damage or miss entirely. I can appreciate how it works better in larger games or where time is an issue, but if time isn't, CBT it is. Note I have not played Destiny as of yet, but it seems like a balance point between the two and I do want to try it out. BTW Kilt patterns are called tartans, usually a unique pattern to each Highlander clan/family. Blackjack is a BJ-3 Variant with PPCs and medium lasers. The one with the 4 Streak SRM-2s went with the ER Large Lasers on the BJ-2. Someone pointed it out to me on the Wasp, it is an early Wolf Dragoon's variant that uses a lot of small lasers. It's a C variant on the Warhawk, 2 Large Pulse Lasers and 2 ERPPCs, it also has a Flamer and 3 more Double Heat Sinks. But yeah, eager for the new mech packs and everything else.

There is a variant of Alpha Strike that you can roll for each weapon damage point.

If you use the Multiple Attack Rolls rule, you roll for each point of damage on the card. It addresses the issues you mentioned while still keeping the game faster. You should give it a try as its the only way I play AS.

The Atlas is a new variant, the AS7-S with a pair of Streak 2's in the back. Also, I think it may have just been an idiosyncrasy or production that made the Phoenix Hawk look like a new pose. The announcement for the box indicated that there would be 4 unchanged minis. As far as I can tell, they are the Timber Wolf, Nova, Warhammer, and Phoenix Hawk.

IIRC.....the pouncer and the phantom were both added for either the battle of Tukkayid sourcebook or the Wolf Clan Sourcebook and then later added to the revised TRO's. Back then every source book had a couple new designs and I think that these two were added in this way. Then holy crap they were actually decent designs. Hope that helps. great review guys!!!

23:28 With regards to 'Why the Pouncer?', a quick Sarna search reveals that it's a, quote, 'testbed design that was upgraded to combat specifications on the orders of then ilKhan Ulric Kerensky, as it was realized that a more mobile 'Mech was needed when combating Inner Sphere forces.' It appears to be a midpoint between an Adder and a Nova in terms of combat role - I mean, look at it, it's just a fat Adder - and it's a 'cheap', low-weight Omni that can fulfill a wide variety of battlefield roles, so long as those roles don't involve close-quarters combat. Doesn't appear to be a fan favourite, can't find any particularly noticeable appearances, weapons payload is not so incredibly diverse as to merit special attention - I think that there's a member of Catalyst's team who just really loves the thing, like me with 65-tonners.

Also, the Fire Moth is a D, which I only know because it is the single most expensive Light Mech in Battletech. 5 ER Mediums with a T-Comp on a Walk-10 with MASC means 2307 points for a fancy Locust. It's hilarious.

Sorry to comment again but: The reason why the Wraith is popular is due to mechanics in CBT. Essentially, it has the movement speed and jump capability to go wherever it wants. So you jump to a heavy woods or light woods or cover with it, attack with pulse lasers to reduce your own movement penalty while using your jumping speed to remain un-hittable. Some folks even trade out some other weapons and/or armor for a targeting computer to basically nullify their jump penalty to gunnery. It's basically a unit that tries to abuse some of the mechanics of the game to an extreme degree in order to find a niche/edge in combat. Yeah, they're fragile, but if you can't hit them, then does armor matter? That's the concept. To put this into perspective for you, Wraiths are the reason I grab 1 ton of Precision Ammunition in my autocannons as a standard load out.

I got so sick of seeing Wraiths and Goshawks in every game after 3055 came out that I dropped to 3025-tech games for a while. I lost count of how many Turn 1’s began with “the Goshawk dumps its ammo” 😂 Amazing mechs. Few FASA designs even came remotely close.

I've very much looking forward to this box becoming widely available. The heavy Quick Ref sheet for AS will be welcome. The ones for TW in the AGoAC box are excellent. The included terrain is a great value add. Of course the stars of the show are the 'Mechs, and I'm never going to complain about the post-KS sculpts. The Pouncer is a "yet another Puma" Clan light, but it had some fun variants in the old CCG with some decent art, so I'm happy to see it included. The Wraith features in one or two of the novels, and it has some truly amazing CCG art, so I'm very glad to have it in plastic now. It's always fun seeing new variants/configurations sculpted, and even simple reposes are fun. BTTW (Battletech: Total Warfare), BTD (Battletech: Destiny), and BTAS (Battletech: Alpha Strike) are all Battletech, as are any of the other scale variants.

The odd thing about the whole Alpha Strike debate is that players don't recognize it is an alternate ruleset in the Battletech Universe. Battletech is just Battletech, it no longer has the "Classic" titling and no one calls it Total Warfare. Battletech is Battletech and Alpha Strike is an alternate ruleset for Battletech. If an argument is made that neither should be called just Battletech, then "Total Warfare" should be added to the Game of Armored Combat box.

In traditional battletech a wraith was an amazing mech. Very hard to hit with a 7/11/7 movement and if your opponent had a basic gunnery and piloting you had to role insane numbers to hit it. plus with the large pulse and 2 med pulse the wraith had enough damaged to cause the mech you are attacking with a piloting skill. So many big melee games where won with this mech.

Yeah I noticed that the Gencon sample cards were pretty much all IlClan era. Personally I think AS is a far easier point of entry into the IlClan era than CBT, due to the abstraction on the weapons systems. Also, I believe the word you were looking for is 'tartan'?

Good review lads as for a few things: 1. You guys got any idea when they seek to release this to public sale so us sad Brits who didn’t get to attend GenCon can start nabbing them in from the states. 2. I believe you were referencing tartan mate. Should maybe take a look up at your own history’s and maybe you will potentially have a clan (family) tartan you can adopt/note and paint your mechs up in. 3. I think they included the Pouncer in there to: A. Start advancing the miniature line of mechs forward from 3052 - 3055/58 and even more into 3067/3151 designs (as they seem to want to include both the ability to play Clan Invasion/FedCom era as well as the new IlClan era). B. Probably cause they introduced the 5 clan mechs made by Clan Jade Falcon (the Fire Falcon, Black Lanner, Night Gyr, Turkina and Cougar) while only including a handful of other clan designs like the Kodia (CGB), Battle Cobra (CSV) & Linebacker (CW/CWiE) so probably wanted to include another Wolf made mech to start catching up with the Falcons.

LOL "the box says it's Battletech." Still a matter of opinion, like "low fat" and "tastes great." As for a new Alpha Strike tutorial, I suggest using the actual rules, rather than optional rules from a commander's edition that they wouldn't have if they just bought this... of course, you could do your regular games with all the optional rules you want, since you bring it up at the beginning of each episode.

I really like that Blackjack model. Not sure if there has been a newer design since, but in MechWarrior 5 and HBS's Battletech they are some of my least favorite mechs to look at. Which stinks because Blackjacks make really good early game mechs. This model seems to give the torso more depth / complexity, which it really needed. I have the same issue with the Jagermech to a lesser degree (the huge antenna helps) - they are basically gun-arms attached to a large, blocky torso with big blocky legs.

Are the Alpha Strike figures scaled for B.T. classic? My first BT lance pack was Ral Partha Fire Lance with 2 Archers, Rifleman and Phoenix Hawk, I ended up getting another year's later.

Saw that Aries Games and Miniatures have updated their website a great deal from when I was there last, and looking forward to them getting new stuff in stock. Some thoughts for Aaron. I noticed that there is a new Banshee IIC sculpt there, on the Aries Games and Miniatures website. Had me thinking of the story progression for Bubbles a little. Something involving her becoming isorla for a Clan, then becoming an abtakha for that Clan, to eventually get a rematch. Vegas vs Bubbles 2. Would like to hear your opinion on the Banshee IIC sculpt.

Last comment for the algorithm God , yep the Warhawk with 4 large pulses is dirty , hell even the Gladiator with 3 large pulses is nasty and I dont overly rate the Gladiator unless its carrying elementals to use as ablative armour for the side torsos .

As per Sarna, there is no Warhawk with 4 LPLs. I think the mini represents the C config, with 2 ERPPCs and 2 LPLs

@@moragion While you're certainly right about the config, the whole point to being an omni is to be able to tailor the weapon load to the pilot's preference. Somebody wants to tell me those are quad LPLs on a custom loadout I'd never complain. Clans have too many drawbacks in AS already.

@@richmcgee434 Absolutely, you can make any config/variant you want. That's whats great about Battletech. But the comment was in response to what Aaron said in the video about it being a config with 4 LPLs, which doesn't exist officially.

There are a few flavors of our AS house rules… there is a campaign packet which we used in our last AS campaign, then the general list of house/optional rules we use. All of them are on the site, but are intended to let you pick/choose what you want to suit your gaming group 👍

Played some Battletech back in the late 90's. I'm now just starting to look back into what to get. This looks like a good place to start with this boxset. If I was to get this and the group was also wanting to do RPG along side the miniature gameplay, would that be Battletech - A Time of War? Or would you suggest something else? And what are your thoughts on doing the minitaure game alongside rpg game? Cheers Edit: Just curious, if you were going to start playing Battletech and wanted the full experience (I know there's a new Beginner Box Set coming out) which box set would you pick up? And why do people say Alpha Strike is not Battletech, are there different game mechanics? I guess I could ask on your Discord, but have been unable to find a link to it. Thanks.

When you have to mod your models to have the weapons on your deployed Mech - that's when I am out. One thing about CBT players, they were always happy with a hex-shaped piece of card with a facing arrow. Tried that playing Warhammer as a kid with units being card with one painted model to show what they were ... and then we went to a store ...

I'll just have to use the MLU for that The buildings are a missed opportunity to have a factory building and scenario where a mech factory gets attacked by tanks. Doesn't Terra have that last demon tank factory? Its old star league tech so Clan Wolf might think it's important but comstar has given up on taking it back and instead want to test a new anti-building weapon with the help of local rebels
