Deb Embarrasses Carter With Her Presentation | ER

The surgical students do case presentations, and Deb seems to put Carter to shame when she does a far better presentation than he does.

Deb is what is known as a "gunner" - someone who goes above and beyond to succeed or make themselves look good, often at the expense of others. The frustrating thing here is that Carter's presentation was maybe a bit underwhelming, but not really bad. But Deb's presentation as well as inclusion of likely unrequired materials like recent articles and a slide show puts it to shame. Medical students and residents resent gunners for making them look bad when in fact they are performing on par with what is expected of them.

You gotta remember Benton was a gunner too. These are doctors with large egos that often times cause them to make mistakes in practice. They all should take more time as effort into presentations, therefore carter shouldn’t have been upset just because she put more time into hers than he did. Debs attitude is what causes her to make a near fatal mistake and quit medicine.

Your point being that brilliant students (and people in general) should tune themselves down to not make others unconfortable ? that they should strictly keep to the bare minimum of what is asked of them and not go "above and beyond" to not make others look bad ? I mean, it's not as if she undermined Carter's presentation to make hers appear better. She did better. Period.

I have seen the show enough to know that she is a gunner, but this isn't one of those instances where she's doing that.... She just had a better presentation then he did.

@@tsuba666 I agree. She is a gunner but not in this case. I bet her talk was super informative and interesting! To me, a gunner is someone who tries to "out do" other people in a malignant way. She seemed to be more interested in the medicine and science aspect than people. She really should've done something more like pathology or radiology. I'm not saying those docs don't care about people but I think you get what I'm trying to say.
