Why Extract?
Extraction allows for a purified product from the cannabis plant, that is showing increased popularity among consumers.
Extracts also offer more consistent dosing.
There are different methods of extraction each with their own advantages and disadvantages.
Water Based Extraction
Advantages
Elimination of additional sample clean up
Ease of automation
Cheap solvent (water)
Disadvantages
Long residence time of extracts has an increased risk of phytochemical degradation.
Rosin
Advantages
Near pure concentrate produced
Relatively simple and easy process with minimal specialized equipment required.
Disadvantages
High pressure rosin presses can be extremely dangerous if misused
It is easy to burn the extract if not properly pressed
Distillation Method of Extraction
Advantages
Extremely pure product, when compared to other extraction methods.
Complete control over terpenes and flavonoids
Easily automated
Disadvantages
A very costly and long process with multiple steps
Takes days to pass 1 liter of crude oil through the machine
The distillation process strips the cannabis of all compounds except for the desired compound, which can have a dramatic effect on the terpenes when adding them back into the mixture.
Alcohol (Ethanol) Extraction
Advantages
Cost effective for large amounts
Alcohol extraction can pull a broader range of compounds from the plant than other extraction methods
No risk of leaving toxic residual chemicals in the final cannabis extract.
Disadvantages
Ethanol has a much higher boiling point than other solvents, which could lead to a longer process
Post processing is extensive, several refinements must be made to the extract before it is consumer ready.
Can be extremely dangerous, significant fire hazard if indoors
Carbon Dioxide Extraction
Advantages
Less valuable material wasted
Specific compounds with adjustments made to heat, pressure, and runtime
No residual solvent in the final product due to evaporation of CO2
Disadvantages
Much higher initial start up cost when compared to other extraction methods
Even once purchased the equipment requires proper training and safety procedures to be understood and followed.
Hydrocarbon Extraction
Advantages
There are a wide range of extract types that can be achieved through hydrocarbon extraction
Can be done with trim and flower.
Relatively low equipment and run costs
Disadvantages
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS, butane and propane are highly flammable and extreme caution must be used when extracting with hydrocarbons.
Unwanted compounds could make it through the extraction process and would need to be later refined.

While I do prefer bubble hash and live resin over bho, I feel like it actually is a pretty good experience. After the refining to get rid of hydrocarbons, it’s pretty pure. You breathe more hydro carbon waking on a side walk than from dabbing bho. It also usually has a very rich terp profile and flavor.

Don't let them trick you, "live resin" just means they didn't cure or even dry the flower before moving to the extractions..

Bubble hash is typically associated with higher terpene levels and ethanol extraction is often used with high volumes that incorporate automation while still offing high purity end products and for these reasons it is typically the preferred choice.

Distill your own alcohol, make cannabis extract into your alcohol, distill it again, and recover the alcohol for reuse, collect cannabis oil from your distiller.

In my opinion, extraction is one of the coolest aspects of the nutraceutical/pharmaceutical sciences Some of the processes, carbon dioxide extraction for example, are still cutting edge and plenty of room for improvement

Would and could you add activated charcoal to coconut oil extract or tincture then bentonite clay to the liquid then run that through celite's diatomaceous earth that has hardened overnight in a funnel attached to buchner and a vacuum? I have it all ready to go but not sure of the process or ratios. The company wasn't nuch help and good info regarding the chemistry side is getting harder to find so your the magical genius i thought of.

Depends on the end goal and there are many details that would need to worked out to make what you stated happen. So, I would suggest starting with small quantities.

What about decarbing the weed & steeping it in oilof choice? Would I need to double extract it with either water, alcohol or all, each for separate thing? Not sure what you are asking. There are many end products that contain cannabis concentrates so it depends in part on your long range plan.

Two stones cannabis nursery here. Just do a 30 to 60 second wash and shake. Then strain. Soaking the flower in ethanol for more than a few mins creates Methanol in your Hash. A 24 hour soak produces such high levels I can't legally sell it. You can use any non-polar solvent. I really want to try chloroform, as the solvent. I've just got such much going on at the farm I can't get to all my experiments So far 200 proof Ethanol has been my favorite as it captures some cannabinoids the others don't.

If you do a ethanol extraction you have to use 200% organic ethanol

Starting with 200 proof (100%) is advised even though this is short lived as it absorbs water from the air is typically "only" 95-97% ethanol.

Saturated fat isn't a very good capture method. It's just easy and cheap.
