I was a minority in my last school and it was wayyyy more yeehaw than this one , and a lot of people got offended over my views, and the fact that I made better points than they did cause they’re so stuck in the past and I always made “moving forward “ points if that makes sense

I unfortunately went to a school like this and did lose my mind, I was the only Arab Muslim in my whole entire 500 student grade lmao. I can’t express how much I hated it there, most of my friends did not go to my school lmao. I’m in college now and I go to one of the most diverse universities in the country now (University of Illinois at Chicago) and I swear it’s such a refreshing relief.

Exactly!!! Like advocating freedom of speech to express yourself there in that video with an oppressive symbol is allowed, agreeable, and understandable, but not for this instance discussed in this video? You can hide behind an old flag and the support that you know you'd get from other like-minded alongside you, but what Colin Kaepernick did was brave because it was new and highly relevant. And though being widely supported wasn't guaranteed, he didn't let this stop him from expressing his truths and using this as a platform to create space for a new discussion. "Democracy is hypocrisy (Malcolm X)." Still true to this day. The difference between this video from the one about the confederate flag is that the students advocating for it don't have a strong connection or belief in it, but the kneeling to Kaepernick had meant so much more to him, making it that much more powerful. kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3_JcnmcqpuJepI (quick 1 minute video if you don't understand the quote)

Whose interpretation it is saying kneeling is disrespectful. Disrespectful is when you turn your back against the flag and anthem. You kneel when you are proposing, you kneel to face your king, you get down on both knee to pray. Kneeling is a gesture of humbleness and submission. @RedToons1

@Fjj I dont know why you keep arguing that this form of protest disrespects the military and its veterans. Kaepernick got a lot of support from military personnel not because they agreed with his messages necessarily, but because they respect his right to protest. In fact, as others have pointed out, the kneeling element was a suggestion by a veteran, since taking a knee is something that is done in the military. You've also tried to separate history for some reason as if slavery, segregation, and the overall bigotry experienced by black Americans is somehow the fault of the south. America is one country with one history - you don't see Germany not taking responsibility for nazis or trying to argue that that was just Hitler and not Germany itself. You're allowed to love the US and be patriotic, but people who recognize an issue within a country and try to bring attention to it and change it are just as patriotic and you should not fault them for their actions. The constitution may have been written over 300 years ago, but its only been in the last 50 years that black people have seen some sort of equality in America. And even then, it hasn't been great. So just because he's protesting and people are agreeing with it does not make them ungrateful or unAmerican or automatically mean that they don't recognize the sacrifices of the military

Debbie Martin I do understand where you are coming from and you do make a valid point. It is great that these kids can have these conversations. What a meant when I said I felt bad was that it must be frustrating. Both you and I know that the kneeling protest has nothing to do with the flag and our troops. And so do all non whites who have experienced any sort of discrimination. So when people are ignorant to that I’m sure it frustrates you just as much as me. Because then the whole point of the protest gets nullified under a different conversation. That’s what I meant. He explained that when he lost a soldier during his deployments, him and other soldiers would kneel to honor his sacrifice. So when Kaepernick kneeled, it was a sign of respect to those who poured blood sweat and tears for this country while also defending his personal beliefs
