That was the biggest mistake made by parliament, instead Sanskrit should have been made National language, which is mother of all indian language. And it was National language till 1800s.

Sankrit is the mother of only the Indo-Aryan languages not the Dravidian and Tibeto-Burman ones but it did influence those languages in the past, that is why we can find many words derived from Sanskrit in them.
