The interesting thing about Killua vs. Kurapika is that their personal arcs are almost the reverse of one another. Killua starts the series as a ruthless killer and ends up becoming a much better person; whereas Kurapika starts as a good person, with a dark past, and ends up becoming a near ruthless killer.

Blue Blaze King Illumi wasn’t controlling Killua’s mind in that instance it was hypnoses so the decision to actually kill the guy was ultimately made by killua hypnoses can’t make you do anything you don’t actually want to do. Killua did kill him Illumi may have pushed him a little but it was Killua’s natural killer instincts which made decide to kill the innocent man.

Meruem is great too, but I think if we're talking about the one most outstanding character in HxH it really is Hisoka. Like I'm fairly certain that Hisoka is the single one character who alleviates HxH from a very good Manga and Anime to one of the greatest Manga and Anime.

HxH "good guys" are really underrated characters, Gon is literally one of the best shonen protagonist ever in terms of development and the relationship between Leorio and Kurapika, even if it's still under-developed, is simply amazing. The reasons why that happens, is because the good guys feels less "surprising", but I cannot overlook how brilliant are written, I honestly think that their just less "cool", more subtly-written and of course their story might just feel less "centered". Leorio and Kurapika feel like complete different characters, for example, but when you notice the reason why they become instantly best friends, you can see how Kurapika is just a Leorio put in a worst version of the same situation (being unable to save the ones you love), a situation that changed their whole life goals and values. The only difference between them is that Leorio was in a better spot and was able to copy with his trauma in a healtier way, and that's why it's already clear to me that he's the only one that can really help Kurapika to save himself, just like Gon did guiding Killua till his real objective. I was very sad about the fact that no one defended our good guys :(

I can't really see Gon as a "good guy", considering his relationship with Killua. If you take a look, that's a textbook example of an abusive relationship. Killua has a very dangerous personality, when it comes to his own personal well-being. He's too loyal, he's too considerate, and too accepting of the faults of those he cares for. Gon, on the other hand, has his self-centered obsessions as the top priority in every scenario, with no exception. We see this toxicity in full view many times throughout the series. In the dodgeball match on Greed Island, we see this in a very literal, physical sense. We see this in an emotional sense during Gon's obsessive tear toward Pitou in the Chimera Ant arc final confrontation. And these are just a couple overt, undeniable cases. There are dozens upon dozens of abusive interactions between the two. To be frank... I think Gon might be a worse person than most of the villains in Hunter x Hunter. And I don't really see much positive development in Gon. All of it that I can think of is development in a negative fashion.

There's a reason because I wrote "good guys" and not good guys. For sure Gon isn't exactly a good guy because no one in hxh is, they have flaws. Now, I think that to define his relationship with Killua as "abusing" is too much, even if it is at times, and you can tell that from 1: the fact that Gon isn't a sadist, he's just an egoistic kid 2: the attachment goes both ways with the same strenght without being a case of co-dependency 3: the growth Killua had: abusive relationships just make you suffer 4: an abuser will not let you go that easily. Anyway is true that Killua is too forgiving, but you have to take into account the relationships he had before, and even in this regard he's grown a lot.

I mean Kurapika didn't get hit by tsukuyomi at 8 years old, so to be fair I think it's a little more psychologically deep for Sasuke. Also the nature of their revenge is completely different. Sasuke also deals with more trust issues which makes sense because Itachi was his hero as a kid. Completely explains his outlook. And he wasn't 100% wrong even in Shippuden. Danzo was the progenitor of violence for Itachi, Shisui, Kabuto, Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan, Sai and his brother, and Sasuke. Oh right! And the ENTIRE Leaf Village when Pain attacked. You could say Danzo would have been dealt with later but fuck that they needed to take him out before his Kotoamtsukami, and 13 Izanagi became too strong. Imagine Danzo working undercover for Obito or Kabuto in the War Arc 😬 The leaf never really confronted or punished him. Kind of a fucked establishment if he took genocide over Shisui's solution and the Village was just like "bleh bleh There was nothing we could have done bleh bleh back to regular ninja life" Like Okay dude very stable societal system you got there.. Kurapika is my favorite of the cast in HxH but tbh I think people gloss over the massive ramifications of Sasuke's psyche. The phantom troupe wasn't a heroic figure of trust and empathy to Kurapika, they were just SOME bandits. No hate though I LOVE HxH rewatched both animes twice and caught up in the manga. I just think Sasuke's character wasn't symbolized or outright explained as much as Kurapika which adds even more depth to his argument that no one could understand him in universe. Because so few understand or acknowledge his perspective from out of the Naruto-Verse. Btw favorite HxH characters are Kurapika and Chrollo so no hate or downplaying how phenomenal Kurapika is here.

How in the goddamn hell did Chrollo beat both Hisoka and Meruem? I don't dislike Chrollo, but I just don't get it. Chrollo is boring as fuck when compared to those two. He's probably the most subtle and understated character in the series, and I appreciate him for that, especially as he serves as foils for other characters. His personality is hollow, _purposefully_ written to be hollow, but still hollow. He lacks identity and understanding of his motives. He cares about The Spider, but nothing else. But this ultimately makes him less interesting and less sympathetic to me, not more. He's a good character, but I find I don't really care what he does next. Whereas Hisoka and Meruem command attention with every action and every word.

That fight was bogus, and Hisoka knows it. It is why he is currently on a revenge rampage. Chrollo stacked the deck and prepped like crazy before the fight, Hisoka fought on his terms, and though he knew it, he was only ok with it because he got to fight him. Would Chrollo have won if they fought randomly on the street with no prior warning? Thats a different question.

Scientifically speaking, when you are young, things you are exposed to can have the most drastic impact. Follow me on this: I think they're equally as good. The thing is Sasuke loved and looked up to Itachi: the one person that took it all away from him. Sasuke's mentality is one that prioritizes the killing of his brother for his clan but possibly also because he was too psychologically damaged to truly connect with people again for fear of Itachi or that person taking it away just as Itachi surprisingly did to him. Trust issues are just one product of Sasuke's conditioning. His fear grew as Naruto surpassed him and Itachi met him. He has some kind of PTSD from being trapped in infinite tsukuyomi. Not to mention the sharingan which works better through hatred. Sasuke by both, nature and nurture was being encouraged to find a path of hatred. When Itachi turned out to be an ally, the blame shifted on the leaf village and after the war and kaguya shifted on the shinobi system. Sasuke saw something truly wrong with a society where mass extinction could be a solution. Kurapika doesn't need defending. He is also great and more well liked.

Hm. This started off well, but Chrollo. Really? I mean, he's a great character, but he ain't got shit on Meruem, Kurapika, or Hisoka. Maybe even Pouf. Chrollo is likely a well written character, but he hasn't really been in the series long enough to make the impact Hisoka has. Hisoka, on the other hand, while his motivations may seem shallow to some, has a set of solid ideals that he has consistently always lived by through more screen time, which is impressive writing. Hisoka is, to me, an evolution of the Toguro brothers from YYH, more younger Toguro than elder, but with the unpredictability of the elder. He's looking for challenges anywhere he can find them and realizing that there aren't enough for him, so he's spending his life raising the next challenges. And that's the beauty of Hisoka: someone so vile, so disgusting as Hisoka should be a caricature, they should be just a rough sketch of a character. Togashi made hisoka human in all the inbetween moments, which is....way more impressive than Chrollo, who is great, but just happens to be a bad guy with morals and a family. That's been done. Media coverage of mobsters has delved into that for ages now. As for Meruem, well, his life is one long arc, an identity crisis from birth to just before his final battle. I'd actually agree that in that arc it's arguable that Meruem was treated more as an antihero protagonist than Gon. His POV was given, and he was learning and evolving in a way antagonists just don't do, until he eventually began a fight over his shifted ideals. Chrollo hasnt grown, because chrollo hasn't had enough time to grow. Meruem had the best villain arc so far in HxH and I think that will stand the test of HxH's entire run. Oh, also a prediction: Kurapika becomes the final villain and the phantom troupe turns face. Coming in 2021.

Chrollo is a more bland version of both Mereum and Hisoka. Chrollo is great, but isn't as terrifying as Hisoka or as complex as Mereum. He just falls flat as a jack of all trades that I enjoy, but to be perfectly honest, he just isn't as fun or memorable as either of the other two main antagonists.

I actually REALLY hated Netero by the end of the anime for multiple reasons. He was basically bullying Gon and Killua for kicks. He prioritized his desire to have a good battle and fought Meriden when it was unnecessary. And instead of choosing a successor, he left the association to fend for itself knowing that Pariston was going to be there to mess things up. Is he a good character, absolutely. But he irritated me a lot. I also think his nen ability is way overrated, but I’m not a fan of giant statue abilities. I thought it was lame when Hashirama did it too.

You could argue Chrollo literally depends on every other member of the spider to shape his identity through them. He almost uses them vicariously, through them he is who he is. Thats why he sheds a tear when losing a member, because he essentially lost part of himself.

I'm really surprised that the hisoka debate never touched on the fact that hisoka isn't even a real antagonist in any shape. For me he even becomes a father/mentor figure for the heroes on multiple occasions- blocking them off the High Tower, during the dodgeball... And i find it fascinating. He also is the first glimpse we have of the power of the nen and that's frightening... plus for me he kind of is a nen "rulebreaker" in that his power is... Well... kinda crappy ? Compared To some powerhouses with some big rules... And he just gives it soooo many cool and inventive applications it always blows my mind... i mean i like kuroro a lot but... he is kinda cheap To me compared To that amazing pansexual don't give a shit killer clown that hisoka is. 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥HxH🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 The best three antagonists in the show are Meruem, Chrollo, and Hisoka Objectively Meruem is the best because we've seen him from birth to death and a character change he undergoes is fleshed out and beautiful. Dying at the same time in the arms of someone you love and all that brought him to that. Not only that but he fights his own nature and nurture of a global dictator in the name of love. But as for Hisoka and Chrollo, Things I like about Hisoka: He serves the narrative incredibly He has a great character design His behavior is interesting He is very innovative with his abilities He craves a sense of danger His motivations are his own He is hilarious! He is an interesting approach to sex appeal! SWHING! His backstory in the Manga was fantastic I can't wait to see what Hisoka will do on the voyage >:) Things I like about Chrollo He is loyal to his cause and comrades He is an idealist so much he puts his life into his beliefs, willing to die for the spider like Uvo He is a straight badass He is willing to understand his comrades concerns to the fullest He has formed an alliance with a very diverse membership He is incredibly smart at both, understanding others, and perceiving the best possible action in a given situation He is strategic His nen ability reflects him more There is more mystery to his history and whether he'll find himself after misery (His character has yet to be fleshed out, more prone to changing or finding who he is as a person) Bandit's. Fωcking. Secret. He has a conscious agenda He serves to advance the plot in Yorknew well His dialogue is stellar His character design is on point As awesome as he is he is still going through a very human struggle of finding out who he is His character has so much more to be fleshed out more I'm so hype for the dark continent! They aren't even there yet! All things considered, my favorite is... .. . Chrollo I even like Chrollo more than Meruem though objectively Meruem's character is better. But Chrollo Lucilfer and Kurapika Kurta are my two favorite Hunter X Hunter Characters. They are OPPOSITES of each other and yet are the same. Both willing to die for a cause (their comrade's lives) and yet Kurapika avoids involving his friends while Chrollo is with 2 spiders at all times. Kurapika is willing to work for a scumbag to kill scumbags while Chrollo is a scumbag willing to die for his scumbags Kurapika hates killing to get what he wants Chrollo feels nothing when killing to get what he wants I believe their abilities are so strong because they both came from a place of great viciousness (assuming poverty leads to the same result in HxH as the real world *coughcough* Meteor City) But that's my take on favorites!

@@gimiked8685 Well for me, in this series, I'm very attracted to deductive reasoning. I've always seen hunter x hunter as cross between dragon Ball action and death note investigation. Chrollo perfectly embodies this concept. While Meruem's nen ability is by one of the most well conceived, I like Chrollo's more and think it's potential for characterization along with his character far outstretch. I think it mostly comes down to the idea that moralizing is absent from hxh. And as awesomely unique as this makes the series, most people driven by their desire (Illumi, Hisoka, Meruem at the beginning ) are not AS interesting to me because they're kind of psychos conditioned and enabled in a society where justice rarely steps in. That aspect of HxHs world is integral to a lot of the character interactions but personally I like team work in Anime and I think Chrollo values something greater than himself. Subtle, but not invisible. So I DO. LOVE. Hisoka, Meruem, Uvogin, Killua, Ging, Netero, Pouf, Pariston, etc. But I think a lot of people are blatantly misinformed on the implications of nature and nurture affects on Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto: I like him a lot. As Kurapika's mission is far more personalized in (again) the less justice themed setting of Hunter x Hunter, I feel for him all the more. At least the discovery of the source of corruption in the leaf village was leading some shinobi to try and stop those responsible. The Kurta slaughter has had little to no requiem and even to accomplish Kurapika's light goal (recovering the Scarlet eyes), he will have to dive head into darkness (see the manga) All in all, they both contain self sacrifice, humility, analytical skills of motives and situations, a theme of redeeming the lost. Many traits I like and that a lot of other characters sort of have but not a lot of them. Also they both display the personality aspect of nen and principles of nen better than Meruem, Hisoka, Netero, Killua and so many other characters people love in this show. I'm sure I could think of more but thats why I'm Kurapika/Chrollo Gxng

Chorolo didnt go to greed island, he physically couldn't get there because you need to use nen to enter and he still had the effects of the judgement chain on his heart. The spiders recruited the nen exorsist to help then after he left greed island

Btw: Ging, Kurapika, and Netero were my choices for the first three rounds (that's as far as I've gotten in the video), but you have to remember the mangaka for round 2! Killua really got shafted on this one I feel. I feel like he had the best character arc in the anime by far out of anyone else, although Meruem has a similar arc as well. The scene of him breaking down in front of Palm I think goes really underrated because it really reinforces just how much Killua has gone from this emotionless badass assassin to really a kid who cares a lot about his friend. The debate was wonderful, love you guys! I thought people would vote for Meruem against Chorolo despite Chorolo is my favorite, wow! Notwithstanding, I have one thing to say about the semi-final. Both Killua and Meruem are like "the Shonen character of your dream written excellently". The concept of their characters are not Togashi's original, he just did his job right. However, the concept of Kurapika and Chorolo is not what you've seen in other shonens. (despite someone copying from Togashi...ye know) They are his original ideas of how to construct interesting anime characters that are fun to watch. Let me try to explain myself, I think if these characters wore poorly written, they'll elicit different emotions from us. Like, poorly written Killua & Meruem: "I thought they were going to be cool badasses but didn't make it up to my expectation." Poorly written Kurapika & Chorolo: "I don't get it, what was that character supposed to elicit from me?? It just won't click." The thing is that for Kurapika and Chrolo, it takes a genius to write them. To think through strategies, make no plot hole, actually make them as smart as they look like... require hard works. If I were a manga-ka, I wouldn't want to have them as my main characters because it's just not worth it! I'm probably not smart enough! So here's my conclusion. I'm glad to see Togashi's hard work pays off here that his most original and hard to write characters win here :) imao

It's a year later but i wanted to say thank you for what you said, i really liked reading it and i understand your point but i think that killua and meruem are not characters that you'll seen often in other show too. And for kurapika, he's a better version of sasuke and chrollo is arguably a better version of itachi and i know you mention that but i feel like it was not impossible to see other characters like that even before Togashi's work. I just think togashi makes them four unique in their own way. The ONLY ONE that i can see and where i can say like "yes Togashi you made a unique character in all kind of ways is Hisoka". It's already over by far but Hisoka is the best character of HxH this shouldn't even been a question. Like this discussion was who is the favorite not the best.

I think it was deliberate making Ging look underwhelming. lol. I find that most of HxH is brought to us via the eyes of Gon. Ging in Gon's imagination and the "flashbacks" we see of him through this lens is some legendary hero. Hunters in Gon's imagination are great people - Gon's concept of people in general is challenged throughout the show. In the Hunter Exam arc, Gon's initial impression of Hisoka was a being of pure evil and insanity and he was very scared (so even the graphic of Hisoka was far more evil and crazy looking in the beginning of that arc compared to later portrayals of him), etc. Despite what Gon thinks though, Ging was always a dead beat dad from everything and anything we knew of him. The fact that he is a despised (amongst many hunters and definitely the Zodiacs) disheveled man is actually not that shocking in that light. What is interesting now is that Gon is presently out of the story so we are seeing the plot and characters through a more mature view. And aside from Ging's physical appearance and him being more a "crazy uncle" than a father (per Gon's brief ongoing manga appearance comments), we are beginning to see more of the world that GING lives in rather than the world GON lives in. And it's a higher level of intrigue and machinations rather than a child and his best friend's adventure. So I suspect (assuming this story is every written to completion) that the initial "underwhelming" entrance of Ging will in fact disappear and be replaced by a "realistic" image of him. Not the rosy colored hero Gon imagined. Not just a disheveled dead beat dad (which he is too lol). But some combination of both and more and he almost certainly will have major impact on the future plot. I actually prefer this kind of entrance. It is far less compelling to have a character be told as legendary and then all we see is legendary behaviour. It is actually more interesting to get the audience to watch how the legend will manifest in a more subtle way. Then the story has a chance to continue to grow rather than just peak and fizzle :D
