Debbie Harry is magnificent, but something about the Muppets, especially Kermit... Surprisingly performers tend to just end up treating them like other actors instead of puppets. Henson and crew had (and some of the crew still has) an ability to get folks to temporarily forget it is just a puppet, and the results are sometimes just magic. I think that is why Jim Henson Workshop and alums are still so sought after for TV and move productions. Yeah, we can do basically anything on screen with CG, but the actors (and sometimes directors) suspending their own disbelief and treating a puppet as a character is a whole other level. Reportedly during filming of Mandalorian, Werner Herzog was giving direction/acting advice directly to the Grogu puppet ;)

This was during the last season of The Muppet Show. I am reading Jim Henson's biography now(Which is why I clicked on this video), and Jim had asked his then 16 year old son who he would like to see on the show. His son said Debbie Harry, and that "She'd be great!" At the wrap party for that episode, Jim turned to his son Brian and said, "You were right."

I worked with Debbie as a stage manager on two music videos depicting live performances in the late 1980's. I approached her between filming to have her sign a few Blondie photographs. I was 8 or 9 when I saw the originals. It played on Saturday nights on one of the four or five channels we had. The line up that night included Space 1999, Welcome Back Kotter and the Muppet show... And then Hockey Night in Canada with my dad. What a totally magical time.
@tconnolly9820 Жыл бұрын
@@philipberthiaume2314 We're very close in age. I grew up in Ireland and we had just one Irish TV channel then but we could also receive the then 3 British TV channels. The Muppets were on both the Irish channel and the British ITV. Did you know that Jim Henson did two pilots for ABC in the US but they were rejected. But instead it was picked up by ITV in the UK and 120 episodes over 5 series were all filmed there? So it was actually a British production. I only discovered that recently. I always assumed it was filmed in the US.

Debbie was so incredibly talented and mesmerizing. Her facial expressions and mannerisms remind me so much of Marilyn , I can't tell if she is doing it on purpose as part of the Blondie persona , or if that was Debbie just being her natural self. Either way she is amazing to look at and her singing is so honest and touching in this song. I didn't realize her full range before as this song is a big departure from the great pop songs she was famous for. I was a teenager when Blondie first came out and I had a huge crush on her. I still do.

@@jimmyoddsocks8666 lol, his voice is instantly recognizable. His voice is so full of character (throaty, low larynx while raising the larynx during delivery to hit higher pitches) that it sits in a middle register and constrains falsetto and larynx drops due to that being part of the schtick. A real trick to sing as Kermit, I imagine. But, Debbie is such a world class talent, she could partner with someone having a sneezing fit and make them sound fine 🤪
