My Meeden paper suggestion is 100% cotton, has a really great texture and is finer grade. My Artisto paper recommendation is student grade, handles lots of water, (still good for wet on wet) and is a bit less expensive.

That's so pretty!! Because of hand and shoulder issues long handles are not suitable for me, I have to hold everything close to my chest (weird I know). I've always seen long handles used for standing and reaching over to easels. Thanks much for sharing.

Thank you Kathy. I get that, I tend to h old my brush (short handle) close to my body as well. Maybe a co ntrol thing :-) I had always learned that the long brush handles were for acrylic and oil artists that were painting on an easel. Things are always changing though right? Jenna Rainy paints with a long brush, thats her thing, and she does beautifully with it. For me... not so much! I hope you give this one a try., I will be chopping off the end of my Blooms brush~ lol Happy painting friend.

Hi Patti, that is always the biggest challenge and struggle for new watercolor artists. I'm glad you are committed; you will get there. Here are a couple of my tutorials for water control. Once you get the feel, you will be amazed at what a difference. Lesson #8 shows water control, and there are good videos in the entire playlist. Always tap your brush off on the side of the palette or dab tip-off on a paper towel before going to your paper. As well Princeton Neptune brushes and other softer brushes I feel are harder for beginners as they hold a TON of water. I suggest either the Velvetouch rounds or the student grade Dugatos to start. I myself don't even use the Neptunes and soft brushes because water control is a bit more difficult. I hope that helps, let me know if you need links or more help. Maybe I should do a video on brushes and specifically how much water they hold. Meanwhile the videos for you friend. kzbin.info/aero/PLGvRyB1lQxykLi0zaDPArWVOjQ-_Hz3zA&si=ZH0Xf6Xb0F5ehg8S

Hi Sandy, interesting so yo udo the same. For me watercolor brushes have always been short, so interesting this one (and some others) come with long handles. I Suppose if they are meant to be used for other mediums makes sense. I cant stand long handles, i hit my face, my filming light, its almost comical~ Like minds gf. Have fun, I Hope you give this one a try, it reminds me of a filbert brush which I Love for florals.

From what I have gathered over time, short brushes are meant for when you are painting when seated, and long handles are for when you are standing and painting loosely in front of an easle holding the brush towards the back of the handle. Most brushes come in both lengths. Just saying!

@@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy I used a large round brush the other day and although it was ok, I prefer the smaller brushes. I think it is because in the past I did very detailed pencil and charcoal drawings and also detailed acrylic painting. Watercolor is a much looser style of painting. More impressionist I think? I enjoy it, but sometimes I fall back into it old habits of trying to be too tight and too detailed. Bummer, but I am not giving up. 😊
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy 6 ай бұрын
@@marybarton5651 That may be your unique style Mary, but I love that you are trying to loosen it up a bit as well. What I do is I will paint very loosely, then go back in and just add a little bit of detail with some fine line work or even an ink pen do what you love friend if detail is what you enjoy challenge yourself occasionally with the different techniques and then go ahead and add in a bit of detail here and there🎨🖌️🌸

@@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy thank you so much for your insight. I think that you are probably right. I am and always have been highly detailed in EVERYTHING I have ever done. From drawing, painting, crafting, sewing, quilting, writing, etc., etc., etc... but I am trying to get away from being such a perfectionist and try to get more enjoyment out of my creative endeavors. I am trying to be more relaxed and have the philosophy of my college art teacher who used to tell the class that if you make a mistake or don't like what you created, it's only dirt (the medium) and paper... of course, I didn't tell him what I was thinking at the time, being a 31 year old mother of 2 and living on a tight budget, that I couldn't afford to just toss it in the trash. Lol. He was however an excellent teacher and I learned a lot about technique, form, light and shadow, composition, etc. Just like I am learning so much about watercolor from your tutorials. TY so very much. You are appreciated. 😊

Long handle watercolor brushes are strange to me bc I feel like not many watercolorists are using an easel so what's the point?
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
@DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy 6 ай бұрын
Hi! Yes, they are weird arent they? I was saying above its alomst comical for me to use a long handle, im hitting my face, my water containers, its so in the way for me! IN college I learned wateroclor artists do not typically paint on easels because the watercolor drips, therefore I always painted on a flat surface. (made sense to me) Easels were more for oil and acrylic. therefore the long handles would work if you are standing infront of an easel and a little farther away. I paint close up and flat lol Just my preference. Some college day art classes stuck with me. :-) Happy paiting friend, I say whatever method works for you is perfect!

There are watercolor techniques that require an easel. Painting in many light layers (called “veil painting” - look it up if you’re interested in very beautiful art) is slow but lovely and uses long handled brushes so you can stand back a little from your work. Completely different from the way most watercolor is done but popular especially in Germany. And there are other methods too which are done at an easel. Thanks for listening.
