LOL Thanks for the shoutout! Yep, I watch all the time. You and LoJo, I don’t miss a video I have learned a lot about modern day fishing especially from you and your teaching. I fished all the time growing up. Sometimes months without missing a day. When I left home I basically quit fishing. Getting ready to retire I took it up again. I have been fascinated by all this new stuff, and like I said, I have learned a TON from you. Thanks Brother. I really really appreciate your videos and all the work you put into them.

I tried a couple Bass Pro reels in the distant past and they are still going strong. The good thing about buying anything from Bass Pro is the service and warranty. If you are an experience baitcaster user, you might be more critical in your choice of tackle. However, most budget reels are pretty good for any new angler starting out. Most reels are setup for easy use. They preset the internal brakes with half the brakes engaged. If you read the directions that come with the reel, it explains how to use the brakes. If you don’t, as many anglers seem to do you might not know you have two kinds of brakes anyway. If you abuse a budget reel, it doesn’t last any longer than a costly one you abuse. If you do a Debo clean and service job like he explained in his videos, that budget reel will last a long time. In fact doing it to a new reel is even a better idea. I found out it improves the reels operation before you ever use it. The difference between a $50 dollar reel and a $100 dollar reel is $50 dollars. The performance is only slightly better. From $100 dollars to $200 dollars, reels often perform only slightly below reels costing $300 to $500 dollars. If you can’t cast a $100 dollar reel buying one that costs $500 dollars isn’t going to make you any better.

I have all baitcasters, 3 bass pro qualifiers, a Johnny Morris platinum (red), a jm carbonlight (white), 2 jm signature (black) and 2 jm titanium (blue -discontinued). They are all a step above the pro qualifiers. But I feel the carbonlight ($120) is very similar to the most expensive platinum ($160). All but rest are very good but hard to distinguish a difference. The signature (black) are the bigger 30 version with stronger drag capabilities. They all go on sale Friday with a trade in program the makes them even less expensive. I have not had any problems with any of the reels. I’ve never used any of the higher end reels but I’m happy with these. Kinda afraid to try a higher end reel because I don’t want to know what I’m missing if I’m missing a lot 🤣

Thank you!!!!! I looked at this reel and I don't know anyone who has one. I like to"play" with one before I nab one up. The price is definitely in my range. I don't tournament fish anymore so I'm not so critical about what I arm myself with like I used to. That's why I chose the Abu Garcia Black Max 3 low profile. It's really smooth, quiet and simple to set. Personally I prefer that over everything. You push the cast button, you hear one click. Cast so smoothly with no winding sound then it engages with one click. No play or give in the handle. Very solid & assuring that it's working like it should. When you set the hook on larger size fish you don't get that crinkle sound. When the fish takes drag it's silent and doesn't tell everyone within 50yards that you hooked the Lochness monster. I really like that!!! As you mentioned,it does have a intriquit external drag brakes system and that does weigh heavy for me. I can throw something as light as 1/5th oz to something 1.3ozs heavy so I don't care about it's ability at all!! Bass Pro Shop is made by a company that makes stuff like Shimano. They field test it substantially before they put it on the market. I really like that as well!!! Daiwa's been my favorite for almost 40yrs. They are real critical about what they put out. Now there's so many brands out that it's literally mind boggling!!. I found that I like Okuma. They have a nice spinning reel but there has been some people that said they last about a year then they act up. I love Lew's!!! Have the original speed reel that started their business into where they are now. I retired it so I can replace the bearings. It's a little noisy now where it wasn't for 40+ years. People judge me when they see it. I laugh because they have these Ryobis that I feel are trash and you hear the reel talking when you reel it in. It's sounds like a " yinko yinko yanko" sound. I always say " your reel needs a stiff drink, it's had a tough time around the lake today". I'm so glad you you put this video out. I want one of those but nobody I know has one. I liked the feel of them and they are quiet. Just needed to hear what they do after a year of experience with it. You hit it all on the head.👍 Can't ask for anything better. Now to watch for the sales so I can save the money for good line. I still don't see the need for braid on a baitcaster yet. I know it cast farther but I am old school oriented and don't like stopping to tie on leaders. Again, thank you for your help. Been wanting a KastKing Royal or Legend but I'll wait until I know more. My Black Max and Silver Max are sweet arsenals and do the trick.

I take it out still from time to time, and it still feels as good as the day I bought it, though its mostly retired now. I'll pass it on to a friend when they're ready to move up to a casting reel.

I think any reel at that pric3 point that performs half decent and lasts a year is worth the money . I have bought other reels at that price point and they are basically trash after a yr of use . Imo i have found when you get to that $100 price point the quality jumps up significantly . 2 of my favorite reels I have a bunch of are the Lews LFS speed spool and the SLX . I think imo those 2 are gard to beat at the $100 price point. I am going to pick one up at the classic sale for my 10yr old to use this year . He made the jump to baitcasters last season and I bought him the Lews American Hero combo at like $75 for rod and reel . He used it all year and works great still. The abuse a 10yr old puts on his stuff ,well you can imagine lol. He will be excited to get it though and I can help him with the breaks as well . I used a Lew's Tournament MB for a little more than a year, which has a nearly identical "dual braking" system. I really grew to dislike it and eventually sold it because of the wild inconsistency of the braking power, primarily from the centrifugal brakes. My analysis is that since they are spring-loaded, the brake tabs provide an "all or nothing" type of braking. As soon as the centrifugal force is not strong enough to move the tabs out on the springs, you lose the centrifugal braking altogether. This is in contrast to traditional centrifugal brakes which are loose and fly outwards proportionally to the rotational speed of the spool, providing high braking force at high RPMs and lower braking as the spool slows. The Lew's ACB and Shimano SVS/VBS systems are far superior and more consistent IMO. I think "dual braking" is used as a marketing term because "dual" sounds better than "single", but in this case I think it's inferior.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
I agree with the free swinging brakes being more consistent. That's why you see that system on the higher priced Lew's reels. I'm a bit befuddled because the mach crush has the dual brakes and that thing will BOMB a lure. I'll have to compare those to the brakes on this 🤔

Great review. Especially with the BPS Spring Fishing Classic sale coming up towards the end of March this year. (Yea it's later than other years) Yea I picked one of these up for $49 or there abouts. Definitely worth the money when on sale, but still at $99 price point is still worth it. As for the brakes, I keep my centrifugal brakes at 2 pins, and magnetic at like 6 / 7, spool tensioner loose. However to be honest, I only use it for 1/2oz (plus or minus) baits.... spinnerbait, bladed jigs, ect. I think I rely on thumb control more than the brakes. Not sure myself. But as you pointed out, for a beginner who might have only one or two rods, it might get annoying with the two brake system everytime you change lures. But yea, overall it worth the price especially when on sale.

Debo, Check out The Reel Test, he just did a 5 reel comparo revealed Lew’s, Revo, Pflueger and many others are all made by the same OEM. Thereby they share a lot of components. Nice review, as someone who is re-entering the baitcast world after a very long time. I can’t get enough information. The Reel Test suggested with the dual brake system. You may be able to turn off the internal brakes and just use the external magnetic brakes for a newbie until they get more experience.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
Yep, they are all made in the Doyo factor I believe. Similar parts but I still like to test the reel for what it is. This one was great for being $49.

Debo, I was a big fan of the Pflueger President spinning reel. I spin tested about 20 at Cabela’s and bought the smoothest one I could find. It was like butter until one day I dropped it on a sand bar in a couple feet of water. It filled with sand and was never the same. Purchased another and it was no where like the original nice but not quite the same. In this world of mass produced products that is common. Everyone who used the original swore it was a great reel and must have cost a lot of money. It was better than reels costing twice as much. I compared it to a Quantum Smoke the reel I was at Cabela’s to buy and they did not compare, so I walked away with the President. Now I have a Lew’s Speed Spin (generic Lew’s terminology) with 12 bearings that is as smooth as silk but they do not make this model anymore. I should have purchased 2 when they were available. The Lew’s was on sale for less money than the Pflueger, I think I paid about $35 for it. I did not realize it was a closeout at the time. All of these reels may come from the same factory yet exhibit different performance and in the case of the President when the same model is compared side by side. I purchased the President XT on sale to replace the original and I wish every day I use it I did not drop my other rig overboard.

@@DEBOSFishing I think it's because I'm a light power caster. I don't whip my baits out there. It's more of a finesse fling, a power lob. I also sidearm most of my casts due to so much hanging cover around my bodies of water

Also I actually found the 2 systems made it easier for me to dial in. It did take a lot of trial and error tho. With my SLX it takes a lot more thumb control and just general experience to get it set with just one brake system.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree the reels with only centrifugal brakes take a bit more thumb control. Once you get use to them....they're great!
@LeatherNeck18335 жыл бұрын
I have 2 of these; one in each speed. Mine have been super smooth and quiet...so far. I haven't had mine as long as you have so we'll see how mine fare over the next few months. As for the DBS and your settings; mine are COMPLETELY opposite. I'm not known for using super loose settings and probably set mine a little tighter than you do. So when you opened it up and showed that you had 4 of the 6 centrifugal brakes on and the mags up to 8, my first thought was, "Geez, he must have had some terrible wind." I literally use one centri. with mags at 5 for weightless stick baits in normal conditions. Today was really windy so I upped centri. to 2 and my mags at 6 1/2. Both reels perform the exact same so I'm wondering if BPS had some QC issues with the braking system that have been fixed on newer models. My biggest con with this reel is the nose. When I wrap my pointer finger around the nose of the reel, the line guide/worm gear adjustment hits my finger. I wear fishing gloves so if I move my finger higher to miss the line guide, the glove interferes with the line and how it spools. I've made adjustments to my grip, but if the nose was 1/8" longer or the adjustment an 1/8" shorter this would be a non-issue. None of my other reels have this issue so it's unnatural for me to adjust my grip when I pick these up. Not a game changer, just a pet peeve of sorts.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, I'm not sure. I generally keep my reels loose but this one I couldn't or it would blow up. Yeah, grip can depend on the person. This one was fine for me but I've got some that hit my finger and I dont love it!
@LeatherNeck18335 жыл бұрын
@@DEBOSFishing I might add too that I fish straight braid so I'm sure my spools are spinning much faster than ones with mono or fluro.

@Mr._L30.5 жыл бұрын
Can you do a video one day on different brake systems for different lures on one combo? Meaning, beginner brake set up for 1/8oz. Texas rig then changing out to a frog or 1/2oz. jig, all on one combo for those that do not have multiple combos. TIA Debo.

I did do a vid a couple of years ago on brakes. That's a great idea to go over something like that! Will make a good "on-the-water" demo vid!

Just one specific combo that budget anglers have where they can switch from Texas rig to frogs to jigs and changing brake settings on the fly. I think it would be greatly appreciated to the anglers that don’t have or carry multiple combos or their finances aren’t there to allow them to have multiple combos. One combo, multiple jobs. Thanks Debo. And I did watch your video about brakes which helped me out a lot.

Don't like the new side plate method Bass Pro is using - it might be quicker removing but not as secure reattaching. I have a couple of these older reels, updated with ceramic bearings and removed the magnetic brake. They're actually really nice feeling and I still use them in spite of having many newer and higher end reels lately.

From everything I see, this is just a Doyo. Pretty much the same as many Lew's, which are also Doyo's. Not a knock, though. Many great reels are made in the Doyo factory. I just got the Lew's Super Duty 300. It has the exact same braking system and I also noticed I have to run the brakes pretty high. 3 or 4 on internally and 8+ on the dial. Very different from how I run my shimano brakes. With Shimano's VBS I only need 2 out of 6 internal brakes and with their SVS I only need 2 internal and like 2 on the dial. I guess Shimano's centrifugal brakes are much more powerful than these Doyo ones. But I'm getting the same distance throwing large swimbaits with the Lew's as I am with Shimano's throwing jerkbaits and other well casting lures.
@DEBOSFishing5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Doyo is the factory. I like to test the reel for what it is. Like you said, a lot of good reels come out of there. I may pick that super duty up for some swimbaits!
