I'm new to fishing. Last weekend I was using my spinnerbait, made a cast and watched my bait launch 100 feet out into the lake. At first I thought I made the cast of the century, but I learned that my knot had come undone. SO, I'm submitting proper knot tying for beginners 🎗
@AndrewFishman
@AndrewFishman 5 жыл бұрын
The cast of the century in distance maybe. We just learned, accuracy over distance, so the true casts of the century are those you land exactly where you want them, not the ones that travel 100 feet. Remember, the vast majority of fish will be caught within a couple of rod lengths of the shore.

When I turned 60 my wife and I found ourselves in Alaska on the dream fishing trip of a life time, and we had no idea 1) how good we had it and 2) how much we love fishing. Since then we've booked fishing guides and they tell us what to do. Now that I just turned 70 I have decided to learn to fish, and in the last week I found out the difference between spin cast and bait cast reels. I also opened a tackle box that had not been opened for 50 years. I'll be overhauling the reels I found soon. I appreciate the rundown of mistakes I need to watch out for. Although having a game plan is something I'm good at.
@ataraxical6694
@ataraxical6694 4 жыл бұрын
Never too late to start! I'd definitely recommend picking up a spin cast over a baitcast for the beginning. I've only been fishing for a few years now and recently picked a bait caster up. It is super smooth but there is a huge learning curve to it. Tight lines!

When i was a kid 5. My dad was stationed in Anchorage. We fished a lot there. Cooler full of salmon. We'd even catch them w a net as they swam up stream. I started bass fishing at 8 from atop a bridge. The biggest challenge was figuring out to cast into the sun instead of away from it...it all clicked one day on top the bridge fishing straight under it...I literally had my plastic worm stationary with maybe 10 fish surrounding it debating to pick it up...what I didn't realize is they seen my shadow.

I’m a brand new fisher and I think I’m perhaps the worst beginning fisher that ever was, but I’ve gotten some missed strikes, some hits, some almost-catches, and a total of two catches, all within maybe 30 or 40 hours on the water. Those moments where you even come close give such a thrill that it keeps me coming back to the water, and it keeps me coming back to KZbin videos. That’s all to say that I appreciate these types of videos very much. One of those catches was right after I watched a video about how to work a plastic worm. First cast, caught a fish. A little blue gill but a huge encouragement.

My biggest mistake was spending a ton of money on gear before really understanding how to use it. I bought 3 baitcasting reels before I even knew how to cast them, I bought a ton of lures that I had never used, and I bought a boat, thinking to myself, "the pros have all of these and they catch big fish, so why would I be any different?" Start slow, gain confidence in one thing before moving the the next. Walk before you run.

2 things that have helped me a TON. 1) Fish every cast. Even if it isn't "the" cast you wanted, dont just crank it in as fast as you can. Fish it the way you would on your best cast, you never know what might end up taking it. 2) Change your retrieve and location before changing lures. Give it at least 15 minutes of various retrieves and casting locations before you change lures.

Great video Debo. My biggest mistake was thinking that my saltwater gear would work for freshwater fishing. So I'm out there using 65lb braid with a 40lb mono leader trying to catch 2 to 4 pound fish. Now I have become a tackle junky because I have as much, if not more, freshwater tackle/gear as I do salt water. Two years ago, I moved up to Oregon from SoCal. There is very little freshwater fishing in SoCal. Ocean fishing is king down there. When I moved up to Oregon, I didn't know much about freshwater fishing. Thanks to you, Debo's Fishing, BassGeek, Tactical Bassin, etc, I am much more well versed in freshwater fishing now. Speaking of you here in Oregon, I am trying to spread the word out here about you and your KZbin videos. I don't do social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc) so my only way to contact you is through the video comment section. Do you have any plans for Debo fishing t-shirts?? Black shirts, white lettering. I am a 33 year old, mom of 2, and I thoroughly enjoy watching this "regular dude from Iowa! You've taught me a ton. I'm still struggling hard with my spinning reel...🤨. (I had never used one & still haven't successfully used one😅😑). Nothin' but birdsnests...😔. So, I finally broke & bought a new big girl bait caster (what I'm familiar...ish...with), and stopped stealing my kiddos' pole. Lol😉 That being said, Im sure if I had more time to put forth, I would most likely have come much farther than I have by now. *You have certainly taught me so much! Your tone of voice is pleasant. You're honest & very real about your experiences etc. You're extremely knowledgeable, which is very informative for me! I really just enjoy watching/listening to your videos. So, Good for you! And whoever edits your videos (yourself, or someone else). Seriously! You do a very good job with that! Keep it up! I'll keep watching & learning!🥰

I just started learning how to fish, my biggest mistake is learning to tie knots. I should practice at home before going out and taking 30 mins to tie something different on. But I’ve also learned that it doesn’t matter how much your rod cost, I’ve been using a $20 rod and I’ve been catching trout and drum. It’s been fun 😀

Absolutely great advice!!! Only thing I can think of that you didn't mention was dressing in blending colors. I wont wear bright colors. If I have brush or trees behind me, I wear camo shirt or hoodie. If no brush I'll go with a sky color or a gray color. Definitely stay kind of closer to the ground so not to cast a shadow or reflection. Always stick to basics. Don't complicate things. By all means...... listen to Debo!!! Great job on this one. I show it to anyone who asks me to teach them to fish

I've been fishing since I was a kid, usually for panfish which I enjoy. Just in the last maybe 15 years I have started to get more serious about bass fishing. One thing I struggle with when bass fishing is trying to learn to fish all the different styles and lures too quickly. Instead of becoming proficient with a lure or style, I keep trying something new on every trip. I just realized this was a thing for me when I bought all these different plastics and I have only tried them a couple of times. I also just ordered a couple of different ned rig colors.

Knowing the fish in your water (Google "Fish in X state / county") can have a pretty big impact on your day on the water. If you're throwing lures meant for bass (because they look cool and it's fun to cast and reel more than cast and sit) in a place that's mostly crappie and trout, you're far less likely to catch anything than if you used something trout and crappie wanted. Worms, rooster tails, and spoons can get a bite from almost anything, so if you don't care what you're catching, and don't care about what's in the water, I'd recommend sticking to those

One thing that has helped me is having combos set up for different “strike zones” before I head to one of the ponds I fish. I’ll have a topwater setup (suspending jerkbait or a squarebill), something to fish cover (Texas Rig) and something for fish bottom (jig or chatterbait) that way I’m not going to have to re-tie (something we all hate) if I need to change things up. I have a backpack with a sampling of lures, in case I need to change colors, or I get hung up, but my three strike zones are covered (top, cover and bottom). Learned a lot from watching this channel, so I’m also really good at catching dinks!! (Sorry Debo) JK

I picked up two fishing 13 bait casters( inception Z’s and a 13 prototype x spinning reel. The. Reason I bought the 3 fishing 13 reels is because they all came with a free fishing 13 fate black 7’ medium rod. My question is do I have enough versatility with these 3 rods or do I need a different rod now for frogging, flipping, jigging etc? Or will I be able to dress them with different line and get the variations that way?

I live on the gulf coast so the vast majority of my fshn is salt, but every angler has to fight his/her addiction to lure hoarding, and I’m certainly no exception. I basically fish 2 “styles”, surf casting or inshore canal/flats & I’ve whittled myself down to pretty much the basics & concentrated more on my skill level & not thinking I need to be reliant on the latest & greatest products. When I’m inshore, assorted jig heads in size & weight & soft plastics are economical & force me to develop presentation skills, which I enjoy very much. Everything eats a shrimp here & learning how to realistically work a Power Prawn & catch fish has been a joy recently. It’s free to practice & learn things like how the color of your lure looks in clear vs dirty water for example. I appreciate the knowledge transfer Debo.
