I agree. 95% of the work on these landys are really easy in comparison to other vehicles. Especially if you’ve owned one for a bit. The kicker here is shoddy repairs that were done beforehand. If someone who knows these, actually went through the whole truck and you use these as intended. Aka don’t let EGT get too high, and stay under 75MPH. They are rock solid.
@gysbertvanderwesthuizen80112 ай бұрын
LOL, I so agree, but they would have more time to see the landscape, specially from a BOSS that thought snorkels on a 4x4 is to go diving with HaHaHa. And blaming the dealership, LOL try a new landy next time, you will spend just as much time on, lets say niggling little problems:)

i think defenders are as reliable as the hands that work on them....people tend to take short cuts and then develop relialibility issues... I know because I've got one and have been shafted by mechanics doing shoddy work then hiding it and the result being breakdowns in the middle of nowhere.. nowadays if i can i supervise the service jobs or thoroughly check it..

So, as a 34 year Toyota LandCruiser owner (565,000 miles driven on 3 80 series), I was all snickery about your Toyota comment and then the various and sundry issues you began having. But watching you guys continue to meet some REALLY impressive trail fix challenges, I quickly dropped that attitude in favor of bowing in your general direction repeatedly. That level of get 'er done, broad skills, and abilities across so many challenges transcends petty brand choice static and your entire group's great attitude during all of them made a friend out of me. Bravo from the great state of Idaho.

This reminds me so much of my runs into Mexico. I had a '71 Datsun 521 Truck. On the US side of the border, she ran like a top! Could bonzai the desert and nothing would break. I could spend a day with the truck on a lift, go through everything, brakes, rear axle, transmission, motor, electrical, everything! Gauranteed, within an hour south of the Mexican/US Border, something would break. 50% of the weight in the truck was spares. Axles, Kingpin front suspension, distributors, coils, plugs, wires, carbs, alternators, water pumps...Gods I loved that truck and damn do I miss the adventures.

Beautiful scenery Rich. Thanks for taking us along. Other than the nuisance of the troublesome vehicles, looks like many good memories were made with friends that will last a lifetime. The dealers who sold you those vehicles seem quite shady. If they had sold those vehicles to someone whom did not possess your mechanical ability to keep those vehicles running, they would've spent their entire vacation at a place of automotive repair.

I've had series Landies.... 2a and a few SIII, Landcruisers, FJ and HJ, 60 and 80 series as well as 80's Rangie Classics which were as close to perfect as a Rover V8 Rangie can be :-) Still have the RR classics but my Daily is a 1997 Disco 300TDi R380 5 speed and it is just awesome, Bosch mech VU Pump TDi, Rangie classic underpinnings and simple as can be with reliability and comfort out the wazoo... and 500k plus on the clock. Everyone I know with a TD5 setup has higher maintenance and cost and with the 5 cyl oil burners they just dont do the miles the older ones do. Zero smog gear, EGR etc and if you tweak the pump you get great mileage and more throttle response too so watching you guys is entertaining as heck in Australia.

Hello Rich. In 2023 beginning in March we shipped our 650 Suzuki V Strom to Heathrow in the UK. We rode to Vimy, France then made our way south stopping along the way eventually we ended up in beautiful Northern Greece. We then began our travels west eventually meeting friends from Calgary in Barcelona, Spain. Spain was amazing. We parted from our friends who returned to Canada after 12 days of riding and traveled back to the UK to visit Wales and Ireland before returning to Heathrow for the flight home. I enjoyed your adventure and agree its a big world out there! If you can do it go visit it.

Well, you are definitely not a Land Rover Virgin anymore! I liked the discussion about how the different engine/transmissions changed the character of the Landy 110. From that perspective, I would like to introduce the Santana PS 10. Made by Metalurgica de Santa Ans in Spain under licence, Santana had a habit of "improving" the Landy's idiosyncrasies. This wrankled with the bosses back in Britain and Land Rover eventually stopped the Licence Agreement, but not before Santana produced the PS 10. Powered by an Iveco Fiat 2.5l straight six and through an Iveco gearbox it was a more capable power unit and transmission than those offered by Land Rover at the time. Along with things like anatomical shaped seats and a host of other improvements that Land Rover UK didn't originally have, the Santana produced Landy's are well worth a look at. Some were exported to Mexico and South America. If you get a chance to drive a half decent Santana PS 10, grab it.
