Most of the time, the starting issue on those old engines is caused by air intrusion through the fuel return line caps. Fix those, add an electric lift pump, new set of glow plugs and my old 91' F250 had no issues firing off down to -10F.

in case of doubt, glowplugs on a pushbutton/switch, my 6.2 starts at -30celcius unplugged
@redlinearroyo8472 жыл бұрын
Lift pumps make the biggest difference. Maybe it's just my issue to get air in the system after it sits for a week or 2. Plugs help too but it doesn't get that cold for me. Only like 15° but it's better than using the starter to warm up the engine.
@DeusTex-Mex2 жыл бұрын
There's multiple issues that can hinder easy starting on these. After addressing everything else, my issue was simply that the old stock starter cranked too slow. Got a Powermaster and now I don't have those issues. These things want to spin REALLY fast when they start. Batteries, cables, starter, anything you can do for it will help.

The idea of an old idi diesel is torque, and mileage. My 1970 Highboy, with a 7.3 also has cross over steering and panhard bar, Wich has improved stability ,steering anomalies like bump-steer, etc cleared up it's a dana60 kp, new rotors, calipers. It's like driving a newer truck. , aluminum rad, new rear springs with my design rear spring hangers, some poly mounts like cab body mounts and spring bushings. Has air springs for my 3000 lb camper. Limited slip (power-lok) in rear. There's always room for improvements. Lots of these motors around and even more parts available then used to be. I still would upgrade the motor but like the re-liability and rpm range.

@johnmorgan8750 he's probably soft peddling it while shifting and riding at 2 k he's getting 19 mpg and it technically wouldn't matter if they were in hi 4s or low 3s but his speedometer wou😮ld tell you his gear ratio . I had a 90 f250 5 spd 2wd I'd get 19 + keeping rpms low and turning 2-2200 max usually, drive my 96 f350 4x4 srw pretty similar hitting hi 17s on regular mixed driving and have bumped hi 19s on a couple long hiway trips 4:10 in my 96 I'm certain the 90 had a little longer legs. Some people will try to make a case of driving it harder for better mpg also these people are not in with basic math etc. Be it checking fuel mileage or not understanding the obvious more rpm = more fuel consumption. But they technically don't offer a big variety of gears as a rule a lighter 2wd f250 2wd will be about the highest geared and lightest truck in the category of f250 vs 350 450 ok I wrote a lot I doubt it gets read lol

The 6.9/7.3 IDI's are one of the most overlooked diesels out there. They are not powerhouses, but are more civilized than a 5.9 Cummins and economical. I'm rebuilding a 6.9 out in the garage for my truck. Like Gavin, I'd rather have a non-electronic diesel.

@@everettschroeder1441 A 5.9 Cummins is louder and has a much narrower powerband. Ford chose the V8 International over the Cummins (when they owned part of the company) for this reason. Remember, the buying public still had the Olds 350 diesel stigma on their minds in this era...
@everettschroeder14412 жыл бұрын
My 91 7.3 is wayyyyyy louder than my brothers 5.9 Cummins, both from the sheer clatter of the motor and the exhaust (granted I have a 3.5" straight pipe and a stack and he just has a 4" straight pipe) but also the cackle in the exhaust of a idi. I won't disagree with the wider and much better power band than the Cummins, and honestly stock for stock the 7.3 had the 12v in power hands down, but the architecture of the idi killed performance above stock power levels and that why they never caught on like the 12v or the powerstroke after them

I don't know what it is about the idi, you get one that starts right up after sitting in the freezer for a month, or one that won't start for NOTHING, EVER. Of all the ones I've ever driven, it was strictly 1 or the other no in-between. She's either a quick starter, or you hold the key and say see you next Tuesday (or wait until the battery runs down whichever comes first)

I think we towed like 6000lbs uphill for mostly 100 miles one way going maybe 15 mph rapping out the engine in a 87 f250 with a 6.7 with no oil. Then drove another 100 back with no oil then after another 2 weeks in 110 degree weather driving around town hauling a 16ish foot flatbed sometimes loaded with logs sometimes not then we loaded up a john deer riding mower on a Saturday morning about 80 degrees and the truck just wouldn't start went through 2 batteries recharged the batteries went through 2 more and the thing just would not start I wish I had gotten to check the compression but seeing in how it would barely do 50 mph after a 10 miles of acceleration I'd bet it was shot or maybe just had a clogged fuel pump but I remember that faithful 100 mile day the temp meter was well pegged around 230 degrees for 80% of the trip uphill But I'd have to say it was still better at hills than my 88 300ci i6
@Drmcclung2 жыл бұрын
@@hickstylez yeah lack of turbo on the original 7.3 iDi did make it a real shitshow pulling trailers up a hill. They just look at a grade and start crying. But they do run forever if even halfway decently looked after. Albeit consumption to power ratio is never acceptable no matter what you do, unfortunately. Today as of 2022 personally I'll leave engines like that to numbers-matched great shape pickups, the kind you couldn't bear tearing apart (it's only 100% original in good shape once). 7.3 power stroke is the one I'd go after if if the price is right and project demands but even that's getting expensive to maintain

The problem there is lack of a proper power steering system. I mean, yeah, Ford did make factory PS for them. But you don't want it. Working a proper Saginaw PS box into there can be done but they always end up a bit janky. You are better off sticking with the manual box and muscling it around with the big steering wheel. I used the frame from a crew cab long box so I had to shorten mine. Make sure to tighten the body mounts down to the brackets before you weld them as they squish some and you’re liable not to have it line up with the box. I used the original Superduty cab mounts and bushings for ease of finding replacement parts. I had to do a bit of modifying of the front mounts as they were a hair narrow if I remember correctly.

Even though the result would be EXTREMELY EXCELLENT in every way. Remember, the old fashioned 4x4 stuff that is considered problematic now are "features" and not impediments. At the end of the day the real story is how he scabbed in a proper Saginaw power steering box to a 4th Gen Ford. Not the engine/trans/axle swap. Making the steering geometry work is a far more complicated task than dropping a new engine/trans into something with a divorced t-case.

It's not that they don't start it's that they're finicky haha. Mine starts perfectly/instantly every time, once I fix the problem it's currently having haha.

I’m fixing the starting issues with my current 7.3idi by swapping it with a 7.3 Powerstroke :P

I'm in northern bc now, and water/heater circulator and in cab heater for warming the fuel tank behind the seat sure helps. Just had -21 temps and it starts great. Power-stroke starter

I love the way the rust on top look on those once the pain flakes off... I was walking not long ago trough downtown, I stopped for 5 minutes just to watch a green one from the 60 still looking solid with a nice coat of wax but underneath you could see the transition from paint to rust to metal.

I had a 79, same color. Meth head stole the drive shaft & tail light's. He got busted for meth & died in prison. He wont be stealing anymore drive shaft's. PS, The 400 got 10 mpg going downhill wth the wind at your back or uphill pulling anything. Just an old farm truck.

You can use a 1410 yoke off the later axles and machine the spline section deeper so that it will bolt up to the shorter pinion of the older axle. You have to machine about .187"-.210" deeper. Works great on the dump truck I built. Then you dont have to do the conversion joints...

This is great information. I’m impressed you had the insight to do some machining and make it fit for easier maintenance in the future.

You guys were giggling like a couple of school girls. That truck has more character than anything else on the road.
