What I got from this is to pay close attention to body language...it's those subtle movements of eyes, ears, head, etc. of the horse which Pat reads instinctively but for me it's like learning how to walk...lol. Thanks for your work and these videos are priceless!

Trying to figure this out with my OTTB. She seems happy to run and run when I rope her. I started stepping in front to turn her back more often to get her thinking. She seems to grasp the concept that my rope landing on her back isn’t there to hurt her. She will accept the rope and move off pressure when I rope her around the neck. My question is, have I forced her into complying by cutting her off before she could figure it out, or was I correct to get her attention by not just letting her run and run around?

Never let a horse run around. It’s just chaos. Always step into the eye and turn them back. Keep walking calmly across the pen and turning him back. Also, check your breathing and your demeanor. It shouldn’t take hours for a horse to understand that you aren’t a threat.

@@PatnDebPuckett thank you. I watched these 3 videos with Chinaco again and I think ive got it right now. Yes, ive been able to use a big calm exhale to slow my horse down and even get her to turn and look at me. Glad I was quarantined with covid so ive had all this time to watch and re-watch. Much respect from Wisconsin!

I could get the jist of what Pat was saying most of the time. The detail I missed is the name of the person he said to look up for learning about balance. I replayed those parts multiple times and just couldn't quite hear it. Could you please spell the name out for me? Thanks in advance!

@@PatnDebPuckett At 8:28 he says a persons name. It sounds like he is saying Reece Sanderford. When I look that up I can't find anything. The pronoun he uses is "he".

OK OK. I’m working on it. Maybe you can make this an exercise in observing the exchange between the horse and Pat. After all, when you step inside a round pen and start to work a horse, there is no audio 😉. Thank you for the comment though...

@@PatnDebPuckett why don't you add voice-over when editing the video? A lot of people can't read a horse and your shot distance doesn't any real view of the horse's language - we can't see the eye or the mouth - and only some of the ear. There is a whole lot more to read I g a horse than what he does with his feet. I've watched part 1 twice and I still have no clue as to why Pat changed from throwing to roping. What did he see that we can't? All I see is a colt throwing a temper tantrum and when he really misbehaves, like threating to go over the fence, Pat takes the pressure of and rewards that! What am I not seeing?
@ceciliawood92734 жыл бұрын
George Goertzen well if he were to put more pressure on the horse could push into the fence harder and then get out, in my opinion that is the ultimate release from this situation and a real pain to catch.
