I never liked succulent arrangements before I started watching you do them. I actually did my very first one the other night. And I just did another one in an abalone shell with tiny cuttings from a 100-year-old jade plant!! Having to stay inside because of covid has made me have to use my imagination LOL. Deborah you have not changed a bit in 10 years! ❤️

Hi Debra, can we propagate the echeveria afterglow leaves to become new plants...or it this type of propagation only works for smaller leafed succulents?

what may be the best way to care for succulents during the winter in southeast washington? i brought mine indoors and placed them by a lighted window but many of them died and it makes me sad that i have 1/2 less than what I started with. thanks in advance, Jules

I'm so sorry to hear that! Perhaps they were overwatered during their dormancy or some pest snuck in?

+Debra Lee Baldwin aww...thank you. it could be that i gave a little more water than they needed. i tried so hard to watch for when they seemed to need it....I watered about once a month to 6wks if needed but i sprayed small amounts with a water bottle to the roots. i did see tiny webby bugs on some... (spider mites maybe?) no direct sun, just bright light was ok? or was sunlight needed since it was winter? i always doubt this especially. thanks again.

That was amazing! I never thought of mixing different types together like that! When I come back from Mother-in-law's farm, she gives me a whole heap of succulents; and I usually just chuck them together in jars and pots with soil to keep them afloat until I have time to pot them. Some plants are quite harsh if you mix them together, with succulents, does it matter what type you mix with? And can i do the same with Cacti?

How do you know when to transplant a succulent? Are they generally slow growing so you can leave them in the same pot for a while?
@QueenofSucculents11 жыл бұрын
Such plants have shallow roots and can be fine, as you mention, for years. If it looks healthy (no yellowing), it probably doesn't need replanting. Keep in mind rotund cacti are water storage tanks. If rootbound or if it goes without water for prolonged periods, it will subsist on moisture nutrients in its body. The skin is waxy, which prevents evaporation. That said, you might encourage it to grow larger and more rapidly if you repotted it. As for vermiculite, it's not recommended for cacti.

I live out in Oceanside, west of the 5. Do you think it would be too humid? You know how our micro-climate goes. Didn't want to take a trip out there if it wont be good for them being that close to the coast. figured id ask you before i took the drive.
@cactuskid96199 жыл бұрын
Tha amount of rainfall is less important than soil drainage. As long as soil doesn't stay soggy for long periods of time, the succulents will do fine.

I have a 12" or so Red barrel cactus. Been in a shallow clay pot for years. Is it good to transplant and add new soil on any sort of regular basis? Would vermiculite work instead of pumice?

i was told by a gardener that i shouldnt water the succulent from the top as the water will damage/rot the leaves of the rosette. he told me to soak the pot in the water instead so that the water would wet the soil without making the leaves wet. but she jus watered the succulents from the top. im confused right now. so how do i water the succulent, expecially those with rosettes? and how often do i water the plant. my country here is summer for 3/4 of the year, monsoon season at year end.

well I'm not an expert...but in the wild, how else would a succulent plant get watered? Rain...lol. So they have to be somewhat used to having water on their leaves. However probably the best thing to do in summers is water it a bit before noon so that there's plenty of time for the sun to evaporate the water off the leaves. Also you only have to water the plant once a week or so. They don't like a lot of water.
