As an aging park rat, just wanted to say I really appreciate the respect you show to the way these kids want to ski. I've got a little guy who likes to race and ski in the park. A lot of the race parents are really dismissive of park skiers and the way they choose to enjoy the sport. I love that you not only respect the way they have fun, but also find ways to apply your knowledge to help them build their skill sets. Thanks for all the content.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong I remember watching one of your videos where it was actually recommended the kids learn how to land and jump off things because it teaches ankle flexion and control. I've been jumping off things as much as I can and this has really helped my absorption control in the moguls and it's also just fun to jump off stuff. It also teaches upper/lower body separation imo as you gotta learn how to land correctly using your legs and not your back and stay balanced over your skis.

IMHO, the way you speak to these kids is amazing. The honor and kindness you show is so evolved. While the teaching and skill development is simply awesome, it is the bond you have with these students that is, I can only assume, what will last for the rest of their lives. Currently I am a bit of a park rat. But I used to ski moguls competitively. I did not always like when my coach would force me to ski moguls, I would want to ski park instead, but I attribute all my technique to them. Now, I truly judge a skier on their mogul abilities. Because if you can ski those, you can ski anything. I think park and moguls is a very good combination to make a phenomenal all mountain skier. Air control and tight turning ability allows them to find very creative and fun lines. Honestly, combined skills of park and moguls has saved me multiple times from very sticky situations. Good job.

As other commenters have said, I really appreciate your teaching style. The fact that you let these kids ski the way they like to (hitting jumps and tricks wherever possible, as most kids love to do), then iteratively show them through drills, or more accurately, let them show themselves, the approach that gives them more control for all types of situations, is great. It's one thing to know skiing, but it's another thing to be effective in getting that knowledge across to your students and viewers. I think you do that as effectively as anyone I've seen teach skiing. Please keep the videos on various topics coming! I always learn something from them and I share them widely to my skier friends and family.

The best skills you need for all mountain skiing is to be able to handle every terrain no matter what the conditions are. An example of this could be moguls on a pow day, or double black diamond trees. And like you said you really need to think about what you’re doing with every part of your body to get the best a technique.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong locally camelback in PA., Hunter in the college days. And brought my daughters to Killington a few times. Killington is the best here in the east, 5.5 hours from NYC. It’s so big, the elevation is good but not CO., WY., Utah, CA. We just got 30 inches this week. Praying we can go to Killington in March. Trying to lock in good skis for one of my daughters. I contacted Evo and they made a few recommendations. She wants to turn easier, hit more moguls and jumps and trail ski. She is good at parallel, black diamonds she cannot just fly down she has to change her style to make it. She is an athlete, state champions in various sports but loves skiing more than anything. Wanted to get her on ski team but winter basketball took over and we are still 1.25 hours away from camelback for local skiing. Living near the mountain would have made the difference. I was recommended: Blizzard black pearl or Armanda ARW and technica Mach 1 MV with look. Hopefully 152 or shorter. Do you think this is good? She is 5’2, 115/120. The shorter the ski the easier the turn? I think they are 110. The width is difficult as the west requires 120 ? So wider or narrow skis allow for quicker turns ? I am asking her to wear a helmet too. So you know any good helmets? I told her it’s not the same as years ago she needs a helmet now, everyone wears one. They are actually cooler to have one. Thanks. Best and be safe.

Hi Deb - Thank you so much for the content on this channel. I have been a subscriber back when you had 150 followers and it's so great this channel has grown the way it has, you are such an inspiration and like the subscriber below said...amazing energy! Love it. I always thought of myself as a ten year old learning to ski so I looked up U-10 coaches and found your channel! :) I did not get into skiing until my 20's and now with kids and my husband being an expert skier since he was little; we just love being out there with them and they absolutely love the culture. Every time I ski I think about your "foot to foot" teachings and steering that downhill ski. My question/issue is I always get hung up at the END of the turn. I have as tough time starting that new turn. It feels like 2 separate movements instead of linked. Any drills or insights you can tell me to help me out with this? Again, thanks for the content we always watch a bunch of your videos before each trip during the season. Have a great week! ....Erin Cook
@DebArmstrongSkiStrong3 жыл бұрын
HI Erin, I am so happy you enjoy the channel. And from the very beginning!!! very cool. as for your question. Well some thoughts, keep in mind I have not seen your skiing so this is difficult to do from the computer and words. do you ever try one ski skiing? This drill is impossible without getting things right so this is a good place to start. Pick up on ski while you are on a cat walk and ski on the other ski. Hips over your feet, all the tipping action coming out of your knees and ankles, NO HIPS, can not be back. If you are having trouble at your transition of the turn you may be back just a bit. this can be for various reasons, boots too stiff, not recentering your hips up and over your feet, etc. start there??? keep me posted ok. take good care!!

Baby Boomers in terrain parks?? Lots of BB-ers who've skied for years, admit to a tad of monotony when skiing the same terrain over and over using the same ole techniques. ("Skiing nine-to-five!") ;-> We all, whatever our age, love to learn something NEW. I've often looked longingly at terrain parks and wish that they were around when I was a young 'un. It would be great fun if you did a video on taking a few older folks down one of these parks. I don't mean teaching FLIPS or CORKS (lol) but just showing us ways that WE could have a helluva good time experiencing something NEW. Because, to me - and all of us - THAT's what skiing is all about. No matter WHAT our age! :-D

I hear ya! the secret in growing older and continuing to learn new "tricks". it is tricky (pun intended). bumps and bruises are real. Bottom line, fitness, fitness, fitness as we get older. mobility, movement. However this said, I do not ski the park anymore. I don't jump anymore. I just spread the love of knowledge. for me it is safer that way. Take care and happy skiing.

May I ask where are you shot this video? I’m looking at the background and seeing a small town with multiple ski runs on the hills across the valley. It also looks like there is a public school at the base of the hill. I also noted at the beginning of the video, you said, “Now for the first mile,”. Coming from the Seattle area, most of our runs are maybe 1,200 to 2,000 feet long, unless you go to Crystal Mountain, and I think they only have two runs that approach a mile. So yah, I’m really curious where this video was shot.

@@DebArmstrongSkiStrong Yes, the ski school I'm associated with is SKIBACS at Summit Central ("Ski Acres"). I was a member of the Ed Piggly Race Team with Butch White, Andy McClean, Will Ferniough (sp?), Dave Prochazka (sp?), etc.

I can go real fast on groomers but on blacks I struggle with my quick turns. I am on 174 skis and I’m 6’2”. I think the jumping exercise will help that.
