Momentum is your friend. Don’t turn across the fall line. Do not drop your hips behind your heels as in sit back. Knees over toes, hip over heels. Hands in front! Never let your hands drop behind you. The fall line is your friend. 🙂🙂

Well said. The one thing I'll add is that turn shape is dependent on terrain and the speed you're comfortable with. I would also say this dude could narrow that stance. A narrow platform helps keep the weight more even, foot to foot and provides a more even and consistent float.

@@weirdbeard1980 Good advice. I just hit powder for the first time (on skis) and my stance was too wide resulting in my downhill ski sinking and wiping me out.

@@ljshoreslokal sweet! Glad I could help. Can't remember if it's mentioned in the video but arm/hand position is also extremely important. Keep the elbows in front of the chest and hands slightly wider than your shoulders.

@@ljshoreslokal one of the best powder tutorials I've seen is Deb Armstrong's lesson on powder where she's training two top level team kids. That's an awesome video to watch. Also, my old trainer in Mammoth when I was training for my level 3 back in the early 2000's is a guy by the name of Klaus Mair. He has a youtube channel (I believe it's called Sopha ski school, I could be wrong about the channel name but you should be able to find him under his name.) Watch those two video's and you'll have some great ideas going forward.

@@weirdbeard1980 I definitely made the mistake on pulling my uphill arm back behind me and I did over rotate. I pretty much did everything wrong a person could do including skiing too slow. Next time I will focus and use your advice and Jens too.

I love your videos and your mood man. Thank you ! Couple points I see differently: Holding hands too forward may be good for you but is not a general recommendation. and also I would initiate the turn with the legs rather than with the upper body being thrown towards the new direction, although I fully understand the how tempting it is in powder to start with the body as you popup.

I have seen so many videos about how to ski powder and funny thing is that so many people focus entirely on how important width of the skis is in order to have fun in powder. Well let me start from simple question, how come in early 80's when there was no fat skis people were skiing powder with no problems?Hmm... interesting question, don't you think so? That means there must be something else about powder skiing, not just fat skis. I honestly believe that very good technic and skills are a must in powder skiing in order to have fun. Now days all you hear is- this new skis will make you a better skier, these skis will make you look like a pro, you will shred the mountain if you get yourself these new fat skis and so on and on. You know, it is all salesman talk to make you buy new product. Don't get me wrong all present day skis are very good but will not make you a better skier if you don't improve your skills. Many skiers have very poor technic and ski basically straight line down the hill like a rocket. If the speed is something that you like then why to bother buying fat skis ? All you really need is a pair of long and stiff downhill skis and that's it. Fun in powder skiing is when you actually make turns, do some jumps, 360's spray your friends, do some tree skiing, ski some open bowls, work on your technic and improve it with every single run you make. From day to day snow conditions are different and those conditions dictate how you need to adapt your technic to new or different conditions. just because you can do nice turns in nice fluffy snow doesn't mean you will do the same in wet heavy snow or snow covered with thin layer of crust. That's were good technical skills come handy. On our local ski hill I see very often this older gentleman who uses old style skis looking like a pair of pencils strapped to his boots. believe it or not his technic is something to admire and makes you want to watch him skiing all day. I have seen him skiing all kinds of terrains and am really impressed how well he handles deep powder, bumps, wet and heavy snow, crusted snow, hard packed snow and groomers.I don't know that man at all , but sure he is my silent hero and am trying to learn how to perform very well in all conditions just like he does. One day i talked to the owner of the ski shop( skier himself) and he told me that now days there are a lot of skiers who have no technic and their skiing is based on muscling their way down the hill. Didn't think about it too much till one day when I started watching people looking down from the chair. I could not believe how right he was. So , before the season starts make some preparations, get yourself fit, work on your technic and later have fun on the slopes.Being prepared physically will help having fun otherwise it is just a struggle with muscle fatigue.

Dear Jens, I did my first turns in the powder (well beside the groomed slope) and thx for your great video. However, I am not clear about the weight distribution especially during the turns...is it on both legs the same or is the outside ski the boss, like with carving on groomed slopes. And do you initiate the turn by a body weight forward movement or do you just "turn" the skis? Tomorrow i will try again.... :-) All the best, keep on going and stay healthy Tom

great video, i learned ski by myself, first day i did very easy slopes green, and i was basically skiing on a small slope where only kids were skiing, i was 24. and next day, i did a 3rd level slope, i crashed, and nearly injured my knee but, it was just a small stretch (probably cause of the high DIN, as i learned lately the staff where i rented them are not that good). i put voltaren on my knee and did that slope 7 or 8 more times the same day until i mastered it. that was my first blue (if i am correct) then 3rd day i i did more blues and on the 4th day i was up on the lift to a high peak and i saw an amazing offtrack powder slope i said, i wish i can do that.. and then i did it. it was an amazing feeling, i drew an S on that, it's amazing really, it was so easy. the thing is i did not ski for 12 years since then. ( yep also 4th day i did at least 2 red tracks, too steep but i was just going diagonally,... now i learned carving online, lol, i did not know it before, lets hope my next time will be soon)
