I fell in love with the agave plant when I lived in Pleasanton California. I eventually moved back to Connecticut and have one small tiny baby agave that cannot live outside 😢 This is by far one of my favorite videos on KZbin! Aren't they just fascinating and gorgeous!!!!!

@QueenofSucculents well, yes and no! Here by the South West Coast, it's certainly milder than Scotland and the far north of the UK, and we don't really get very cold winters in England... It's more the dark winters, and the ridiculous amount of relentless rain we get, that are more problematic for succulents (and dare I say cacti!) I can't believe they grow like weeds in California! They're amazing plants, and your gardens look exquisite! They're seldom grown in gardens here, but sometimes we grow them, and pretend we're somewhere warmer (and brighter) than England 😀

Gorgeous Agaves! I love them all! I wish I have spaces to display them at home, unfortunately we are just renting so we can't plant or do landscape! I'm planting them in big containers or pots & some are in small container so they won't grow much. Most of my agave collections are agave attenuata. Thanks for making this video!

Great info as always! My A. guiengola will pup and the 'Creme Brulee' variegated pups like mad. That may be because they were introduced from tissue culture. In the 2016 video with Kelly Griffin, you can see the mature specimens in his walkthrough have pups underneath.

Great video! Thank you for all the beautiful video of the different varieties. How deep do the roots of the large agaves stretch? I want to plant one as a focal element but in a place where I don't want the roots to ruin something nearby. Is there a large variety with shallow roots (preferably one that isn't too spiky and can take full sun)?

Hi Marlo -- Compared to similarly sized woody plants, succulent are shallow-rooted. However, most agaves have a strong root system that anchors the plants and sends up pups. Roots of Agave americana are especially good at insinuating into small spaces. If you live where frost or scorching sun aren't concerns, consider Agave attenuata. Otherwise, get whatever you like and fits your climate, and plant it in a large pot.

Being native to the arid desert Southwest, agaves are not happy in damp, humid tropical climates. Of all North American succulents, you'll have the best luck with Agave americana (century plant) providing you plant it high so water drains away. It gets huge, though. (See my video.)

Congrats on your new home and garden! Lower leaf pruning has nothing to do w growth. It’s a practical solution to damaged leaves or those that are in the way. Cutting all the way to the trunk looks better than part way.

Debra I was wondering now that I just planted 5 different agaves and just looked at those huge blooms some will produce, if its possible to stop the growth when it begins? The agave Victoria on your website homepage is awesome with the tall thin bloom. I want to avoid the flowers that attract lots of bees so definitely dont want anything like a Century agave. Are the roots deep by the time the plant blooms in most of these agaves? Do all of the agaves die except the ones that dont pup and other then blue glow which others are in that category? Thanks Deb

Hi BB -- You can cut back the stalk, but there's no way to stop an agave from trying to bloom. It has to do with its internal clock. Agaves like most succulents have shallow roots compared to plants of similar size. Agaves are monocarpic, meaning they die after they bloom (the few exceptions are seldom seen in nurseries).

According to Mary and Gary Irish's book on Agaves and Yuccas (p. 143): "Propagation is by seed. The plant is not known to make either bulbils or offsets."

From what I've observed, it's usually the other way around: Variegates of Agave americana sometimes produce pups that are solid-colored. I've yet to see a solid-colored specimen produce variegated pups.

I had a large agave about 4ft tall and I think deer(maybe kids beat it, idk) used it to clean antlers now it's really tore up. Is it worth attempting to bring it back? It's an eyesore now. I did really like it when it was full. Now not one leaf is in good shape.

Agaves keep their leaves for years, so although it will grow new ones (from the center), you'll be looking at Its sad, shredded leaves a long time. Up to you, but I'd probably get rid of it.

That’s one nasty bug. Would a simple dusting of cinnamon in and around the base keep it pest free? Also, can you keep one in a large 10-15 gallon pot? I have a neglected one in a 5 gallon bucket consisting of a mama in the middle, surrounded by pups that I will soon pick/twist out. Recently trimmed the mama of her outer leaves; the center is still closed needs to open up at this point. I’m hoping the pruning of the pups and transplanting into larger pot helps. The plant was a gift and I have no space to plant it in the ground, so it will need to stay potted:) Thanks in advance for any tips, Cheers👍

I'm having a lot of trouble getting my blue glow agaves to establish. Either they form white spots on the leaves or they get yellow leaves. What am I doing wrong? I love that agave and wanted so long for them to be available again in local nurseries but now I cant seem to get them to grow and look good. I noticed even in the stores many of them have lots of those large crispy white spots, not from bugs but more of a dried out area.
