Debrief: OceanGate Titan Submersible Tragedy | Unanswered sub questions with

The Titan launched at 8 a.m. on Sunday, and was reported overdue that afternoon about 435 miles (700 kilometers) south of St. John’s, Newfoundland. On Thursday, U.S. Coast Guards said debris had been found on the ocean bed. Authorities said all five people aboard the submersible died when the vessel imploded.

There is a person from Mexico who went into one of these expeditions with Oceangate last year, after a failed attempt in 2021, he went back last year and they were able to explore the Titanic, back then it was 125,000 USD per person, he was sponsored by two Mexican Companies, he documented the 8-day experience into a 4 part video, in one of the videos Rush Stockton gives a tour of the Submergible from inside and outside, he shows Titan had 4 external cameras. His channel is called 'Alanxelmundo', the videos are in spanish but Closed Captions can be turned on. The first video is called 'Mi Expedicion al Titanic parte 1/4 - Alan por el mundo'

This series is remarkable in that it shows (in part 2 or 3) the re-docking of the sub when it surfaced lopsided (because some ballast had been dropped) onto the platform. It was a tremendous job, took the whole night to get the thing on. In short, the diving crew spent almost a whole day inside the sub! Also it wasn't a 8-day experience, it was two trips altogether.

It's a pity that there is an interview of Alan Estrada after the accident, but all in spanish without any subtitles in english. In the series one can see HP Nargeolet who actually went down twice and did not survive the 3rd time. In the interview Alan made clear, that the control device, which everybody finds rediculous, is only ment to move the sub from left to right and down and up, probably to get better views of the souroundings. It was never meant to control the complete submarine.

This is still an ongoing event, as they are on the question of even seeing if there are *any remains (not necessarily still intact) to be found, or what else could be in this debris field. This reminds me of the Hawaiian Air incident when the top half of the front of the passenger cabin separated from the plane mid flight. The cause was found to be microscopic stress cracks in the fuselage from the takeoff and landing cycles that weren't detected. The airplane skin had compressed and decompressed one too many times and it just broke off.

don't worry, his mother (is german) gave an interview to a german newspaper. Her son was eager to go (the aunt a false one to make a buzz?). Because he was great with the Rubik cube and he wanted to establish a new record with it, very fast and at -3800m. He had applied for this record with Guinness Books. So he went very exited, laughing with his dad, who had brought a small camera to film the occasion. His mother was on the mother ship and she saw them off!

I'm afraid that to me the reason for the collapse is obvious. I fly FPV drones made from carbon fiber, as they take hits the laminate becomes separated from the fibers. I once learned that the extreme pressures of a submarine cause the materials to be squashed, solid metal by inches sometimes. Carbon fiber can not flex in this way and be ok, how did it last so long? The squash should break up the carbon fibers glue. Submarines need to be built to compress and decompress their structure safely especially at these depths! They found at first on the bottom, the tail cone, the front cap and the landing gear. These parts were attached to the fiber wrapped central core that would have shattered like glass as it finally imploded. RIP and thanks for all the work contributed to the study of Titanic, they were brave I'll give them that, this is a terrifying idea to me!!!

It’s the same thing as the fuselage of a pressurized aircraft, a jet, etc. I fly business jets and the jets that I fly all have cycle limits. Though the cycle limits or number of times we pressurize the cabin of our jets have much higher limits, they are still limited for a reason. This is SO sad, I cannot even begin to imagine. I have had a few moments where I’ve heard our main cabin door pop or make noises due to the pressurization and it definitely gets your attention, not a comfortable feeling. I can’t help but wonder if these crew members heard any popping noises just prior to the implosion. IT’s haunting to think about. 🙏🙏

Human remains a side being bombarded with pictures of the debris field can be distressing for the grieving family and friends think back to 9/11 when you couldn't get away from the instant replay of the planes and the endless imagines of ground zero. I understand that interest is high but Monday morning quarterbacking for click bait sake or images for sensationalizing tragedy are in poor taste. Getting valuable information to improve safety and avoid further loss of life is admirable and necessary but that is going to take time and won't happen quickly to feed news cycle interests.

I want to say something i am an average youtuber don't have any expertise or even intricate knowledge study or experience about any of this but: I am under the impression that the depth of the accident is already calcuble and that some people will already know, here's why Great stream btw and insight, right well during the course of this broadcast i discovered that the US Navy were aware of a sound at a specific time quoted as 1 hr 45? min from when the dive began,, in any event they will have an accurate record of the exact time. From the time the vehicle started it's dive, now despite my lack of knowledge, i know that a dive will be constant ie the rate of descend from the start. if we now know the time of commencement, and the time the then unidentified sonar implosion sounds, as was picked up by the Navy, and we know that the vehicle takes a specific amount of time to reach the sea bed said to be 2 hr :20 mins i believe?, then it's really simple math to calculate the depth if we know the depth of the seabed approx 12500 ft this tragedy occured as a very rough guess at 9375 ft, more accurate figures will be made with the exact data. cheers

I wish this kind of coverage could be done without the hokey dramatics. When will journalists learn to stop publicly handwringing like a bunch of nervous old ladies at a sewing circle that ran out of tea. Anyway, I am a former US Navy submariner who also is degreed in Materials Science & Engineering, and have previously researched materials selection for a deep-diving submarine of the kind involved in this event. The bottom line is, the material selected for the central, cylindrical, section of the pressure hull was made of what most non-professionals would call PLASTIC, which was completely incompetent for this application. This material is usually not noted for its strength in compression, regardless of the tensile strength of the carbon fibers. Moreover, the presence of carbon-fiber reinforcement inside the plastic (which is epoxy plastic) carries with it its own set of potential problems that can lead to the implosion which occurred here. There are quite a number of metals choices that would have been acceptable instead. Additionally, combining the plastic composite with metal endcaps in the same pressure hull is a highly questionable idea, because of differential compression rates with depth between the two different materials. A single material for the whole thing should have been used. The use of a cylindrical form for the hull was also less than optimal. From a materials engineer's perspective it is sadly unsurprising it failed by implosion under the circumstances. The Navy's policy of retaining from the public the SOSUS data showing the sound of the implosion until after the boat's remains were found is sound responsible decision-making under the circumstances. It is the safe way to proceed if you are responsible in handling sensitive information, however contrary that might be to the prevailing mentality of the news media and others with an essentially childish need for stimulation from matters entirely outside of their lives.

Love your show JB. This is extremely tragic as we all know. So sorry for the families. But OMG this could have been avoided. This was a dum move. That little sub off the bat didn't look safe to me from the jump. Senseless deaths. What could have been done is a decision not to go. And a father taking his young adult son was to dam extreme. Who as a parent makes that dum ass decision?? I would never do that. In fact I will always try and talk them out of dangerous situations. Doesn't mean they'll always listen, but I'm going to give it hell.

Count me in. Even before the Navy reported this, I was wondering: Why didn't the Polar Prince detect a possible implosion, even allowing for the immense distance and tons of water between them? My simplistic, non-specialist answer is that, like the Titan had insufficient equipment on board, the Polar Prince had no sonar powerful enough, no acoustic detection system etc, to get an inkling of what had happened? OR, did they know something had happened? This is a sincere question, not a conspiracy theory. I've been reading a lot about this, but I feel we will get many more data as days go by.

JLR, what I read on google maps is it could be a photo path to a 360 camera veiw so yes I think they have a good surveillance there.

The public doesn't have a right to know immediately, especially when the experts do not know exactly what happened. I have seen experts make a premature statement to the media which later turned out to be incorrect and that expert was later crucified by the media and on social media. Imagine if they had released the information about the noise when the Navy heard it and then the Titan reemerged later. They would have been chastised for making premature statements and causing stress to the families and the public.

@19:30 Another risk is the carbon fiber construction. If composite layers have any air at all, even the tiniest bit, those will easily weaken the structure through repeated extreme changes in ambient pressure.

Quality Engineer here. Where are the quality and inspection records? Where are the material test reports and the manufacturing procedures for each component??
