Once again, great video Andy! As you know, I’ve been running my Ally X docked to a 4070 Super and I can’t ever go back 😊. Nothing felt better than playing the games I enjoy maxed out at home then to only continue playing while traveling to Japan 🇯🇵 and South Korea 🇰🇷. It’s literally like the Switch that we all dreamed of. The one way this experience gets any better is with Thunderbolt 5 😜

@@btkchaosreaperj.c7642 Occulink does support a faster connection (63gb I believe). However, thunderbolt 5 is supposed to be 120gb 🤤

​@@btkchaosreaperj.c7642 you're right, absolutely, but the only way to use occulink with the ALLY X is to mod it by connecting an occulink adapter into the m.2 SSD slot, which then means you need to run an external SSD, which then makes it no longer portable and you may as well just build a desktop.

On my way to building an Egpu setup! I remember reading somewhere that if you’re using an Nvidia card, the in-game graphics settings will be saved when swapping between dock and handheld mode. Is that true? Or do we need to manually adjust the settings again everytime? Is there an automated solution? Or any tips?

The better the card, the better performance, despite any bandwidth limitations! All comes down to your budget really and what kinda performance you want out of it. I wanted the 4070 Super but at $150+ more than the 4070 I bought at the time, I couldn't justify that price jump for minimal gains. Overall I'm happy with the performance I'm getting here.

Awesome vid man. Im hooked now. Ive been using my Ally X with a 4070 inside a razer core x. I have preordered the new Aoostar Ag02. Would I be getting better performance hookin g my 4070 up to that instead of the razer core x?

Thank you! Epic news, glad you've been enjoying the ALLY X with that 4070! Yes, you'll get better performance via the AG02 over the Razer Core, the Razer Core uses Alpine Ridge controller which has the most bandwidth limitation, the AG02 is the same as my ADT UT3G using Asmedia controller, with the lowest bandwidth limitations. You should absolutely see a performance increase!

Hi @128KB, thanks for the video, it's very good. I have a question, I built the same egpu that you showed in the video, with the same components and the asus rog ally x, I followed all the steps for installing drivers and troubleshooting, but the GPU-Z in "Bus Interface" keeps showing me PCIE x16 4.0 @ x4 3.0, what could be the reason for the 3.0? (CUDA-Z speeds are lower than what you show in the video). I re-installed the drivers several times, but the problem persists. Thanks!

@@nelsonlizama7798 100% try a different USB4 cable, I forgot to mention I don't actually use the one that comes with the UT3G. I bought a certified Thunderbolt 4/USB4 Cables Matters cable. That may be the issue!

Yeah we've discussed this in previous videos, even in this video I believe where I talk about Thunderbolt 5 being 120gbs. The UT3G is the lowest bottleneck you can get, only bested by Occulink that requires modding the ALLY X to use.

Im using a razer core x with a 1660s and its great for native 1080p. Not everything gets cranked ultra but still better fps nontheless. Might try to update the board in it to usb 4 at some point down the line. After i pass down my 3060 oc 12gb to it after upgrading my desktop.

Not sure what you mean but ok! Edit: OK, understand now, no, I have no intention of doing that because you will lose performance sending the signal back, as mentioned in the video. Why would you want to send it back to the ALLY though, out of curiosity? Performs perfectly well handheld using upscaling and optimised settings.

@128KB No, I understand. It's just my own use case because I move a lot for work, I really can't lug around a monitor. I wanted to know how much performance I can get from just an eGPU. I have been searching around for that. This is the closest I've seen. I know there's around a 25-30% performance hit, but I really wanted to see actual benchmarks on it.

So what's the difference between that 4070 and the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super WINDFORCE OC 16G Graphics Card, 3X WINDFORCE Fans, 16GB 256-bit GDDR6X. Since 16 Gb Vram seems more appealing. Less fans maybe ??? 🤨🤔

There's 3 4070 variant, 4070 is the cheaper card with lowest performance, then it goes 4070 Super and then it goes to the 4070 Ti Super, which is most expensive with most performance. Price was 4070 here in the UK is around £460, Super is around £580 and Ti Super is around £700

From the results here we can see it doesn't suck. Occulink is better for sure, you can use it but the ALLY needs nodding for that.

@128KB You're right. It still offers better performance than no eGPU. But you're still missing out on a ton of bandwidth/performance because companies are refusing to add a port that's a literal game changer.

Yes because you use hdmi on graphic card so when you unplug it will switch back to normal

Great video and I appreciate all the work, effort and expense you went to. However it has confirmed for me as a newcomer to PC handhelds that I'm going to keep the new AAA stuff that I want to play maxed out for my PS5 and keep using my ROG Ally for what I have trademarked as my "backlog machine" 😂 So older games, indies and retro on ROG Ally and new stuff on PS5, best of both worlds with zero faffing. I do think that if Asus and Lenovo are smart they could partner and bring out a simple ready made solution to Thunderbolt 4 eGPUs and it would blow away Switch 2 and help them go mainstream. Even if they don't someone is going to see the gap in the market and make it.

You do you! Geforce Now is a totally valid and easy option for the majority of people. I for one don't want to be renting a service that requires internet, with a 100 hour cap per month, with zero return. The eGPU is as niche as it gets and not worth it for many but not only can I sell the parts and get my money back, I can upgrade them too. Also, I'm just a regular person with a camera 👍
