This is probably the most impressive homemade, scratch-built firearm I have ever seen. All the DIY firearms I've seen lack the feature of being semi-automatic (too complex for other people to build, I guess), but the semi-automatic pistol you built seems to speak for itself in terms of ingenuity.

Most impressive? Search the Luty submachine gun, now that is the most impressive. It's a full auto mg that can be made with hardware store parts if you search " Lutty submachine gun" here on youtube you will see that there are eve n illegal ones turning up in Australia and you can see a video of police firing them, they are insane.

In WW2 the PPS43 was made so simple that people with their own workshops in their backyards could manufacture it using the most basics of tools, I want to see people do that today also making AK47 is also relatively easy with basic tools compared to most other firearms.

Great work man! I'm very impressed! Years ago when I first read this book I was a little unconvinced that a build like this would function realibly without a tonn of tweaking, glad to see that you made it work! And nice to see that you have actually made this into a sexy pistol as oppose to the authors build who was just going for function and gave up on looks alltogether. Awsome work!

This is a straight blow back operated pistol, so an extractor is not really needed, but is handy. One thing to do with the feed ramp is not use a double angle but have a 1 to 1.5 jump between the frame ramp and the barrel ramp with both ramps at the same angle. Set the barrel ramp back .0015" for every .001" it is above the frame ramp, this can improve the feeding. The frame ramp should be slightly below the mouth of the magazine. Good job adding the spring ejector, I suspect the extractor fit was a bigger issue with the failure to eject, it may not have held the cartridge long enough for the magazine ejector to get at it. On a straight blow back operated pistol the extractors main job is to hold the spent cartridge up so the ejector can get at it. Have you considered moving the extractor from TDC to the side at a 30 degree angle and bending the ejector spring/pin to run along the side of the slide/bolt? Over all excellent job.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Greg McAulay I hadn't considered moving the extractor off on an angle. I do like the function of an extractor to cycle the endless test rounds through to get all the proper spring rates, feed lip, feed ramp etc... This is of course a one off from a crude workshop built by a slow learning fellow. Lots of testing required. However, did you see the latest video? I have the function nailed. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4LPqpyqhKx3i8k

Ah.. better groupings already! About the occasional burning brass to the forehead, that's why the ejector pin (in your case spring end) , there has to be a little offset to the left , not too low and not directly under the case extractor. When adjusted correctly the ejected cases should roughly land on the same spot. How's the hardening of the magazine lips holding up?
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Bechmon Shitan Agreed, slight tuning of that spring is required. I'm pleased that they depart with some authority. The "special" hardened lips are holding perfectly. There is not a lot of pressure with six rounds loaded. I can actually get 7 stuffed in but that may cause some creep. 6 six is good enough for me. The early shooting attempts were performed with me trying to observe how the pistol was functioning. My attention was certainly not down range. I'm also pleased on the grouping and the non-tumbling.

Whoo Hoo!!!! Super job. You have been an inspiration. I have some 4140 lying round that I am thinking of trying this with once I move out of California. The zip gun law here is a real bummer for home gunsmithing enthusiasts.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Donovan Thanks for the comments. I regret not doing this build in a better steel. But honestly, when I started I didn't have high expectations. Oh well. You do realize that this is not a zip gun? This is a fully legal rifled handgun. Does California not allow that?
@rdtradecraft
@rdtradecraft 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, the reason I am considering using 4140 is because your build was successful. Had I been in your position, I'd have done the same for the same reason. California has a zip gun law that considers any gun made from parts, not designed to be a commercial firearm, from parts made by a licensed manufacturer, or altered to chamber a round, to be a zip gun, unless you register it with the ATF and pay the $200 to get a tax stamp. Thus, in California, you can mill out an 80% lower from any existing commercial gun(AR15, AK47, Colt1911) or make or or buy and assemble the parts for these guns from scratch for personal use, but the gun you have built would be considered a zip gun unless you paid the tax to the ATF and register it. That's why I often refer to the State as the California Soviet Socialist Republic.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Donovan Wow! There are States with much higher crime rates and less restrictive. I've considered moving to Northern California but I will have to really consider the restrictions on my freedom before I do that. I think I'm better served staying where I am. If you start/finish a build, please stay in touch. I've developed a strange affection for this little gun:)
@rdtradecraft
@rdtradecraft 8 жыл бұрын
+Clinton Westwood Speaking of crime rates vis-a-vis gun ownership, like many, I find the fact that while we are oft condescended to by other countries for having the highest per capita firearms murder rates in the world, ostensibly because of our gun culture, removing the four US cities with the most restrictive gun laws drops us from top of the list to fourth from the bottom. One cannot infer from this that guns prevent crime. However, taken with the fact that many states with looser gun laws and higher density of gun ownership have lower crime rates, one can certainly say that possession of guns does not make it worse and restricting them has little to no effect on improving it. Regarding living in California, while I love the climate and the people are fine for the most part, that is not enough to offset the high cost of living, high taxes, and paternalistic, nanny-state regulatory environment, of which idiotic gun laws are only one example. I am saving up to move to a more gun friendly state, which tends to correlate with being less regulatory in general. I would be glad to let you know what I build once I get it done.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Donovan I agree 100%. My freedoms precede climate. I've been around a few years and have always been surprised how armed citizens scare the bejeezus out of the ruling class. In response to the highest crime rate cities, eradicate the gangs/gang culture and problem solved. That's about as much as a political statement that'll make on this family friendly channel that I'll make:)

When I heard someone posted plans of this I was just "meh" because a lot of other people have built some but none of us built it to the quality of yours. I'm impressed. Excellent job. What I really liked was the home made rifling contraption. Did you have to deburr or fine tune the barrel after that operation?

I have now! And I must say, I like it! I never tried building anything as intricate as what you're doing, and don't own any machine tools except a couple hand drills & grinders, some files and a sawsall. Oh, & a couple big hammers & some welding equipment (self taught, you can imagine the weld quality). But after watching your videos, I'm thinking I might attempt a "machining project". The most ambitious thing I ever built was an attachment for a Bobcat that I designed to pick up large irregular shaped rocks with as little scarring of the stone as possible (for building masonry walls out of large stone). It was like one of those claws on the crane they use at a scrap yard, except w/only 2 arms. Mounted to a quick attachment plate, (if you're familiar with skid steers). It was mainly welding and drilling holes up to 1" in up to 1" mild steel, (that was fun w/a hand drill), & it was powered by a single hydraulic cylinder, so I had to devise a system to equalize the arm movement. Talk about a contraption! A fairly rough piece of work, but it worked! Anyhow, The most "machining" on it was hollowing out 2 pieces of 2"x4"x4" steel plate in a half ball shape, & corresponding spherical cuts out of 1" stock, that would contain a trailer hitch ball, when sandwiched together, to form a wrist socket for the "hand" on the end of the arms, that I thought was necessary. Turned out it wasn't, but whew, what a job that was! Accomplished w/varying sizes of hole saws starting with the largest 1st to a shallow depth, followed by decreasing size hole saws at increasing depths to get the rough shape, then lots of grinding to remove the ridges, and finished w/lots of hand sanding using the "braille method" to achieve an acceptable fit. Grease fitting thru the back of the 2" plate, & it worked just fine. One day, if I ever figure out how to load a picture on youtube, I'll "show & tell" it in all it's glory. Uh Oh. Sorry for the long winded response, got carried away. Keep up the good work, and thanks for your time and effort in making these videos for all of us!

I just finished all of the major parts of mine, with the exception of the magazine. Should have a new video up tomorrow :) By chance, what video editing software do you use? and do you use a compression software to speed up uploads?

for an ejector why not just use sheet metal welded or screwed to the inside of the frame and cut a small slot for it on the underside of the bolt, like any 1911 or beretta 92 or any other basic semi auto design? you could also do what Ohio Gun Works does with the High Point series and just have the firing pin strike a stop as the bolt travels rearward acting as an ejector.

Very quick question. Is there a place where a safety can be placed on the gun? The trigger bar and FCG pack design make it seem as if integrating a safety not possible and keep it looking decent.

The Confederacy had arms supply problems. There was at least one guy who made revolvers in his barn. They used some brass parts for ease of working. Half the melt temp and less dangerous to handle.

The Colt Navy and Yellowboy came in brass too. Getting an autoloader to work is quite a personal best achievement.

what shape is the primer end of the firing pin, thickness of it, and protrusion from breach? also what gauge is the wire for the hammer spring? on a side note, your workmanship is extremely impressive and I'm really enjoying watching your current build on the 380. I would love to see a .22 build as I think the weight of materials and spring pressures would be interesting to learn for such a small powder load.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 6 жыл бұрын
The firing pin has a slight radius to the tip. Approximately .090' OD. I will have to check the wire gauge I used. The music wire was much thinner than I would've guessed. Springs are very deceiving. I will probably use the same size for the current build. I think the Krikit is a good candidate for .22LR. I wouldn't change the materials.

Hammer spring is .032". I used that gauge throughout the build.

Nice job, I'll take two please. Make one kind of fancy for presentation. Really it seems like a nice little gun. I wish I had the, how should I put it, the manual dexterity, time and strength. I'm a little too old and arthritis, kinda stops me. I've seen a few guys on youtube who make their own,. I use to make rifles but the last one was more than twenty, twenty five years ago.

Great to see this piece finally working as it should. However, do you think it would be possible for someone to make one of these scaled up to say 9mm? or is there something in the design that prevents it.
@clintonwestwood5498
@clintonwestwood5498 8 жыл бұрын
+Ein The Corgie By scaling up to a larger caliber, you need a much heavier slide if you're going to keep it as a blowback. I think a 9mm would require somewhere in the range of 2 lbs plus total slide mass
