The entire first chapter of Sorcerer's (well, more like second and third) are best arguments for the section being a dream. What is your argument? "Because you cannot have dream in the dream" or other stupid thing like that?
@kit_nine5 жыл бұрын
@MrajkaSrajka Oh wow, a challenge. Let me get a few sources real quick. Not going to be from the first chapter but you'll see. Book One, Chapter Five, page 61, Lines 3-5 and lines 12-15+page 62 lines 1 and half of 2 Lines 3-5 ""It was a dream" he told himself firmly." I dreamed a giant called Hagrid came to tell me I was going to a school for wizards. When I open my eyes I'll be at home in my cupboard."" Lines 12-15 and page 62 lines 1 and half of 2 "He sat up and Hagrid's heavy coat fell off him. The hut was full of sunlight, the storm was over, Hagrid himself was asleep on the collapsed sofa, and there was an owl rapping its claw on the window, a newspaper held in its beak. Harry scrambled to his feet, so happy he felt as though a large balloon was swelling inside him." Harry is happy that it wasn't a dream when he opened his eyes. If you don't find that to be enough evidence, here. Chapter Seventeen, Page 294, Line Nineteen, Word Five to Line Twenty, Word Fourteen. "At once, a needle-sharp pain seared across Harry's scar; his head felt as though it was about to split in two... " Chapter Seventeen, Page 294, Line Twenty-seven, word six to Line Twenty-eight, word four. "Harry's scar was almost blinding him with pain... " These two pieces show that Harry can feel actual pain, which is impossible in a dream. Ok, I spent way too much time to prove that it wasn't all a dream, so if you don't believe me, I will take about as much time to respond. So, thanks for giving me a challenge today.

My personal theory was that it was all a dream at first and Harry wakes up in the cupboard under the stairs at the age of 10 once again. He’s then sent to check the mail and low and behold, the Hogwarts letter is among them.
@antitheist32067 жыл бұрын
Most of them are boring, I'll give you that, but "dream theories" can explain glaring plotholes without having to hastily revamp earlier parts of the story. Time Turners are a good example; Rowling had to use Pottermore to try explaining why Harry and the gang never use time travel for things other than rescuing that mangy quadruped (and Buckbeak of course); for one it's time travel, it solves every problem, but for two it's MAGIC. There is no excuse for why this concept never comes up again, it ends any potential conflict before it begins; if anyone with ANY sense of how powerful that kind of artifact has was using it Voldemort would've been completely destroyed by the fourth book.

As a writer, I have thought multiple times aput "Hey, if someone made a fan theory about my book, what would it be? What questions haven't I answered?" And something that always pops into my head was "its all in there head" or "they died or smth". A friend even mentioned this once to me, and I must say, I never start off writing, thinking I'm going to end this 30 chp book with "And then, Alex woke up. Alone in his old room." Or "Little did he know this was far, far, from his real and physical life." Or smth like that. But seriously, these theories can be put to anything. You could put these theories to like, I don't know, Winnie the Pooh or something, even things like MLP that defiantly didn't have any intention having to that way.

I don't agree with the theory that HP is a "dream" but that is the only one that COULD be true and would be some what interesting, the one I saw on it didn't say it was a dream tho. But that Harry was ACTUALLY sent to an insane asylum, perhaps St Brutus's, that the magical events that happen are all hallucinations. That in the first film/book he is only imagining the envelops and the Dursley's decide to go on holiday to see if it would help... when it doesn't thats when they call the Mental Hospital that send an orderly "Hagrid" to get him, they kept him locked in the cupboard under the stairs for his and their protection..... I still don't believe it but its the only one that COULD be true... personally I think the HP series is a biography the Wizarding World agreed to put out so that the muggles would know the story since we were saved as well... MUCH better theory =)

1) Explanation of magical abilities before Hogwarts are really underwhelming 2) Reasoning behind "why you have to go back to life with Dursleys" argument is really underwhelming 3) HP1-3 - the time when this theory grew strongest and originated from - had little long-term sense, were super fantastic, high on deus-ex machina - both on large scale events and harry's personal issues / the way Hogwart connected with Harry's life situation was also possibly full of deus-ex machina.

The thing about these "theories" is I believe that some of them (SOME) could make sense in certain situations. The whole thing about UP I could see as a sort of references or metaphor for death and the afterlife but in reality yes everything DID physically happen. What it does for me is it brings up sort of a more interesting view on movies themselves. Like, does it really matter if they are dreaming or not? It is just a movie. For that matter, why make theories at all. If it isn't explicitly said to the audience than it can't be proven. Again, it is just a movie. I don't really like the "it's just a movie" people because they say that in situations where people are really passionate about movies and passion is not bad. The reason I make this point is that I just find the whole idea to consider that a bit mind blowish and I love thinking about it. Sorry if I contradicted what you said. I just want to continue on the discussion. You are a great KZbinr!

Thank you for debunking that Finding Nemo Theory. I was skeptical about that one from the start , but I wasn't sure if that was just because the theory practically ruined my childhood. Finding Nemo was my favorite movie when I was a little girl. Now that you confirmed that the theory is not true, my childhood is saved.

I feel like all the dream theories are just taking the dream concept from The Wizard of Oz and applying to other movies.

Also, all these can be disproved because according to science, you can't dream about someone you've never seen before. I mean, if you even see someone in the mall you can have them in your dream, but I'd guarantee Harry hasn't seen Ron, Hermione, Molly, Fred, George, Ginny, Percy, Bill, Charlie, Arthur, Dumbledore, Aberforth, Neville, Luna, Dean, Lavender, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius, Lupin, James, Snape, Flitwick, and McGonagall all walk down the streets, let alone a part giant like Hagrid, Voldemort, a house-elf like Dobby, etc. I mean, even if he did, the magical world would still exist if he saw a part giant (2 part-giants), and a house elf walking down the street. And WHY DOES HE HAVE A LIGHTNING SCAR THEN? Why is he being raised by his aunt and uncle? How did he end up on top of the roof or growing his hair back while he's at school. And that's JUST THE HARRY POTTER THEORY!! This evidence works for all the other theories as well.

Trust me: no matter if the creator debunks a theory, people will still find a way around it. For example, there is a certain theory regarding Jojo's Bizarre Adventure that not only makes no sense in the first place for multiple reasons, but as also been debunked by the author himself, yet there are still quite a lot of people who stand by it and straight-up call the author a liar. So while the creator of whatever movie, book, etc debunking a theory about it could be seen as proof that the theory is not true, there are always people stubborn enough to continue believing

Actually you can disprove the HP one, because if one dies in a dream, you immediately wake up because therein has no knowledge of what happens after death.

I know I am a bit late on that video, but I just saw it ^^ While I agree on you with the first two theories I must admit I liked the last one about UP a lot when I first read about it. Maybe it is because I work at a retirement home, but I made the experience when old people lose someone they love as much as Carl loved Ellie, they usually follow them in the next few months. So this theory about the film UP showing his journey to the afterlife just came into my head on its own, before I even read about it and when I read it, I liked it a lot and felt agreed with. I think the metaphor for his journey doesn't end at the paradise falls. That is just the point where he discovers his true paradise and ends up in it - having a "son" he can just be proud of and share his life with, like he never could when Ellie was still with him because she actually couldn't get kids. So... I think what you see as "resurrection" I see as his actual paradise - having a loving family. They just didn't add Ellie to it, so kids wouldn't be confused about why Ellie was there again and so don't get the wrong impression, that their dead loved ones will come back EDIT: Really hope you gonna read this even though the video is a few months old and leave your thoughts as a reply :)

Creators of huge franchises are never going to go with “and it was all just a dream”, it’s unoriginal and boring for audiences, and writers are actively discouraged from doing this. Unless if there’s another interesting and new plot twist alongside it, or the plot is differentiating dream from reality or something it’s not going to be the case.

With the part about how "JK hasn't said the theory is false, so that means it's real", sadly, that won't stop people. There's a LOT of people who follow the "Death of the Author" train of thought where they basically think any fan has more claim to what the story is about or what subtext is true than the actual author. Tolken is a great example where he often would flat say people were wrong on things they thought he was implying or suggesting in the Lord of the Rings books, and people still claim "No, he really meant that thing he said he didn't mean, it's all an allegory." People will just use whatever stance it takes to be "right".

Ok but when it comes to the Harry Potter specifically: even if harry did go insane. Harry Potter is EXTREMELY well thought out no one can imagine something so impressive with out putting a bunch of thought into it and at least taking notes. Plus like Seamus said, how can someone have a seven year dream.
@balloon46374 жыл бұрын
Yeah, like you can think of it as a coma but 1st: thats a VERY long coma. 2nd: how would he have even entered that coma? 3rd: Even if he managed to get in there, the Dursley’s would’ve noticed. They aren’t THAT mean.
