I actually really like legacy character as a concept ( I am a casual comics fan, I like being inform and watch related media, but never read a lot of comics). I think the concept is great because 1) It can give an ending to an old hero. 2) It show that the hero change the life of other. They encouraged other to fight injustice in their own way. Heck, I watch the justice league cartoon so I was introduced to the flash and Green lantern by legacy character. And Into the Spider-Verse is the best Spider-man movie ever made and it show the strenght of a legacy character.

I sometimes forget that despite being a lifelong comics fan, I too grew up with some legacy characters. For instance John Stewart was actually my introduction to the Green Lantern, via the animated Justice League series. I remember when the awful live action movie released, I was upset they chose to go with the Hal Jordan iteration. Who is himself a legacy character. Indeed I was introduced to Hawkgirl through the same cartoon and as a kid was often disappointed whenever other properties went with Hawkman instead lol

I went through an arc where I tried to get Nerdrotic to explain who was being replaced every time he used the phrase M-She-U. He'd never answer, of course, but his fans would frequently say either "everyone!" or if REALLY pressed, Loki and Hawkeye. It's interesting these are the options they'd select, because it boils down to a girl being a prominent part of the show in question. Just by asking questions, most of these folks would end up revealing their real problem with this is basically they're afraid of being cucked somehow. For example, Sylvie being a gifted hand to hand fighter but sucking at magic otherwise meant that Loki was a weak, pathetic loser and that wasn't ok. The fact that Loki had been humiliated dozens of times over for laughs over the course of the MCU was irrelevant, they very specifically have a problem with her being a good fighter and him sucking at it. Kate was even more confusing and seems to just stim from her being present. Her entire arc is that she's trained herself to be like Hawkeye but is just not good enough and keeps getting herself in trouble and Clint has to rescue her. Again, irrelevant. She's there now and Hawkeye won't be soon. I think ultimately, this fear of characters being "replaced" is fear of status quo changes. Nobody likes change. Nobody likes feeling irrelevant. And since most of these fears center around straight white men being replaced, it's abundantly clear that when you've been a position of privilege, any type of equality or diversity change feels like oppression.

The last one, Bobby Drake, reminds me of Legend of Korra and how they made her bisexual at the end. If you pay a little bit of attention though, you can see that they had been building up to this conclusion for two or three seasons, but a lot of people missed it and assumed it was some kind of last-minute decision. That sucks, cause I thought it was actually really well done and not too subtle that I didn't see it coming before it happened.

Rather than “anti- fans” I’d propose “ drive by fans” as an appropriate moniker. They don’t really know the terrain or context, but strafe in to offer uninformed opinions. Another example for your list was the flap about Sasha Calle and a “replacement” Supergirl. As if there haven’t been multiple Supergirls in the past. Or as if we’re never going to see another blonde Kara again.

I just don't like a lot of the replacement characters, simple as that. More importantly the only legacy characters that really move me are the ones from concepts that are inherently replaceable or multiple - like Captain America or Green Lantern. Where it really gets boring are characters like Wolverine or Spider-Man. These are unique characters - I get that a legacy might exist but would they really have a knockoff name and costume? Most people want their own identity (in real life) and I just don't buy that because my daddy wore a blue and yellow costume I'm gonna wear a blue and yellow costume too. That just screams "corporate brand extension" and is just boring to me.

Its all behind vapid platitudes about "I just want well-written characters.", "What's wrong with wanting good storytelling?", or some vague reference to "writing", with the qualifiers of "trash", "bad", "garbage", etc. Typically referring to the entire film, not any particular piece of "writing"...because... Any attempt to get them to provide evidence, or ...maybe explain what they actually mean by "woke", it gets responses that seem to center around race, gender, sexuality, and/or religion, complaining about "identity politics" ....hmmm ...weird...anyway, complaining about some sort of "agenda", they can't ever seem to explain, being "forced down our throats". ....like a dreaded small "👋 See you later! Love you!!" peck on the lips of a very lovely married couple with a family. How fucking wholesome is that?! ...oh, I forget. They are two cis men. Oh...the ...horror! 😲 ...or that one time a woman had a self titled film, who got powers from an infinity stone and ended up being pretty powerful, but was kind of a dry, sarcastic dick due to various traumas and being around assholes? The audacity! My favorites are when they start talking about how "uninteresting", " bland", or "boring" a character or story/comic is, ...and not like small specific aspects....but the whole character and all their comic series. Odd....I wonder what the common thread is? We may never know...not really. Maybe if I poke at them enough, they say the quiet part outloud.

If there are so many robins as there seem to be? does that mean that robin has been replaced a shit ton of times by this logic? Not to mention all the offshoots of Superman, one of which being a literal fucking dog. And like, you don't even need to really read comics to see legacy characters, just casually watching cartoons like the Justice League will show you a few. I mean look at how many Green Lanterns are there. Yes, we have a main Green Lantern in that show, but we also see others. Not to mention Batman with Batgirl and Batwoman. Hell even anime/manga does it, Jojo is basically "Legacy Characters: The Anime", they all inherit the legacy of the Joestar bloodline, most of them have Stands, most if not all of them (At least in the original universe) were affected by DIO in one way or another. THE JOJO'S ARE LITERALLY ANIME LEGACY CHARACTERS! And don't get me started with Doctor Who.

Love this! Thank you for being a great ambassador. It’s true! Unfortunately, there is overlap between the Fandom Menace, general anti-fandoms and the alt-right, because the alt-right managed to infiltrate our fandoms and poisoned discourse. Gamergate and Comicsgate being the most prominent, contemporary examples. Thank you for engaging that commenter in good faith. I will say, the reason why most progressives, leftists, or even liberal allies who read comics or are big superhero fans tend to get a little defensive is because we’re conditioned and trained to recognize dogwhistles. So when a casual fan who may have naïvely just been watching and absorbing too much anti-fandom content without considering a nuanced/different perspective can start casually saying phrases in their arguments like “woke agendas”, “replacement”, “degenerate”, or “forced diversity” (which are loose dogwhistles used by white supremacists for the white replacement conspiracy theory), our internal alarm bells go off. It can legitimately become very hard to differentiate between someone who is a fan and may be trying to argue in good faith, but became twisted by anti-fandom rhetoric, or a you could be talking to a white supremacist troll trying to be stealth or just posting rage bait. It’s a challenge. So again, thank you for this video! Keep up the great work. 😊

Yup, I would call all these Anti-SJW channels alt-lite. Are they as bad as Richard Spencer? No. But are they *leaning* toward a so-called ethnostate? Yes. Especially when you consider that The Quartering tried to defend Richard Spencer after Charlottesville (on Twitter) and tried to get published by The Daily Stormer. On top of that, they all had a stream with the well-known right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones. Therefore, The Fandom Menace is definitely alt-lite.

Oof! This rings too true lol I was once naively caught up in the anti fan rhetoric. Mostly through the gaming crowd. And indeed I remember being turned off by folks reacting to my arguments, instead of arguing with me in good faith. Actually such instances were championed by the same anti fans who basically said “see? We told you this would happen!!” In hindsight I was arguing in bad faith and was quite toxic. There are some folks that I think I owe a sincere apology to. Because there were a few folks who did try arguing with me in good faith, I was just too stubborn and ignorant to extend the same courtesy back. I’m so ashamed of past me. Though I guess I should be happy that I was able to leave such toxic ideas behind.

You couldn’t be wrong on so many levels. As a black man forced diversity is an insult because it isnt necessary instead of mainstream comics like dc and marvel just doing an original character who is a minority they rather destroy the concept of an already established hero. Alt right aren’t the ones saying this about diversity its normal comic book fans who feel the alt- left has destroyed comics in which they have the progressives, and leftist are the biggest Segregationist and racist in America they would rather paint a minority over a white character because they only see Legitimacy and more values in white characters such as superman, spiderman, batman, and other popular supes. People who dont like their forced diversity and Wokeness are called racists , homophobics, and xenophobics. Its a tactic called gaslighting in which they accuse someone of being something when they are actually the ones doing the deed. Malcom X said that the liberals were the Deceitful they use minorities to push their agenda, it not about civil rights, our diversity for them, its about pushing political agendas.

@@Oakcliffagent Hello! I'm going to try and respond as best as I can, but you said *a lot* here, and unfortunately the only way for me to fully engage and address your comment means that I would need to deconstruct it and ask follow up open-ended questions. But I also want to keep this as short as I can and not put words in your mouth. First, what do you mean when you say terms like "wokeness", "alt-left", "leftist", and "forced diversity"? What do those terms mean to you? The left, like the right, is an extremely broad political spectrum which can describe a whole range of political ideas and values. I find way too often folks throw the term "leftist" around without actually knowing what it means. Second, who do you think works or controls the comic book industry? Once more, I really hope I'm not putting words in your mouth, yet the biggest criticism I have when I see people who make comments similar to yours is that you seem to be implying that anything "diverse" and "woke" automatically equals "bad" which is objectively false. I need you to provide more context and examples before I can even fully address you. You're on to something, but I think the phenomenon you're referring to is tokenism, not so-called "forced diversity".

As it turns out Eric July is now doing the exact same thing Cyberfrog guy did. What I don't get is why all the most welcome "woke" fans are not deeply insulted by the obvious key-jangling tactics these corporations use. "We at Brand are inclusive and diverse. Look at this new/old product freshly painted in rainbow colours. It is gay/black/trans. Consume product and deposit finances now. Brand is an ally to current social movement.*" *Statements/products not available/applicable in regions where social justice is not a dominant social movement and will be removed without reservations upon regional request. On the "replacement" topic. I don't care what gender, sexuality or race a superhero is. But I'd preferr it if they made some new heroes instead of subordinating less represented backgrounds to the shadows of throughly established straight white male originals. Primarily because it's lazy, and invites incompetent writing, but also because it'll always be viewed as a cheap knock off. Consumers might buy and enjoy cheap knock offs but they don't value them the same as the original. I mean. The examples are plenty, but just look at Supergirl. They put a young, well endowed, blonde and blue eyed beauty in a skintight suit, and still "every" neckbeard on the planet went with the OG farmboy with the sixpack. Meanwhile Wonder Woman and Spawn did quite well for themselves. It's almost as if it was more about being an original hero story than it was about dangly bits and colours. True they're all straight, but it's fair to say that those parts of their stories are more about love than they are about sexual preference in any meaningful way.

You clearly don’t hang out in any leftist circles or watch leftist content if you think we don’t criticize the cynicism of corporate “wokeness”. We do. However, the criticism is aimed at the fact that *some* of these corporations then donate to conservative candidates and causes that explicitly seek to reduce or prevent equal rights. Until vulnerable and marginalized groups are safe and have equal rights and access, cynical representation is better than none at all. It means a lot to many people, regardless of whether you or I think the corporations are doing it cynically. The corporations usually are but the creators are often of those groups themselves and are telling stories that connect with the people of those groups and allow new stories to be told from unique perspectives. As for it being “lazy”, is Robin lazy? Is Batgirl? How about Barry Allen Flash? Hal Jordan? Those are also legacy characters with the same names and/or powers and gimmicks as their predecessors but I don’t hear people calling them lazy. You can think it’s lazy all day long, but that’s just your opinion. The sales, critical praise, and growing fandom disagree with you so you’re asking for everything to be catered to you. If you’d like to discuss this further, I’d be happy to talk on stream with you about it. Have a good weekend.

@@ActualFandom I do hang in leftist circles, and I do hear the criticism against corporate donations just like you stated. That criticism is not a substitute, now is it? In fact, that's a completely different complaint. That's not the topic I engaged with, and I don't even want to because I have no disagreement with you on it. If you want to argue that "woke" fans should NOT be insulted by the keyjangling itself, regardless of donation patterns, then I can pursue further counter argumentation. No, none of those legacy inheritors you mentioned are completely lazily and incompetently written. Nor did I promote that idea. Again, that's a different topic that I don't want or need to argue. I didn't even say that Supergirl was lazy nor incompetent writing. Let me rephrase my argument: Legacy inheritance is NOT a malpractice in and of itself. It's a useful tool that serves to refresh, diversify and extend a hero lineage when needed. It is often less than expertly executed, but this is also true for attempts at original characters. The inalienable characteristics of the inheritor are completely irrelevant, in most cases, and thus we can mix and match however we like to give everyone a version they can identify with for those who look for or need that. However. If the goal is to have more representation for the sake of inclusion, with the inalienable characteristics of the hero being inescapably fundamental to that effort, the inheritance practice is and always will be lazy and fraught with incompetence (fraught does not mean guaranteed to be, just more likely). Lazy because it upfront abandons all efforts of sourcing the hero's power from those unique characteristics though meaningful development and experience, and fraught with incompetence because the qualities required by such a writer are so rare that it is more likely to be attempted by someone who only fulfills them partially. A superhero "only" requires that the writer is capable of heroic tales (that are universal to all humans) and has a fantastical imagination. Added qualifiers require more. Such as having a foundation of knowledge about being black, or being gay, or being female. Someone without personal experience could try, and possibly succeed, but are more likely to fail in some major or minor way. Likewise, being a good writer and storyteller is a fairly rare trait. Finding one that is female is easy, finding one that is black is easy, finding one that is gay is easy. Finding one that is gay, black and female AND willing to attempt it is harder. It's simply down to available numbers at that point.

When these complaints started I had to laugh. These were supposed comics fans who have knowledge of the industry. They should know changes never stick. If a character dies, they will come back. If they are replaced, eventually the replacement will be shelved. Very rarely is a change for good. When people were freaking out over Riri I was like, Tony will be back in a year or so. Legacy characters are nothing new. Status quo shifts are nothing new but everything will always return to normal. Even when it shouldn't. Some times changes should be permanent. like Barry dying and Wally becoming Flash. Or Peter Parker being married to Mary Jane. And yet that doesn't happen. The status quo is God even when it shouldn't be.

I clicked this out of fear what a happy surprise 😂 and mile morales is my favorite legacy character. Into the spiderverse was so amazing even the most racist fan has to admit it’s good

Some of the legacy characters have had better arcs than main in recent years. Still as an avid figure collector the toy industry alone can keep the main characters and their original identities alive for years to come. There will be no actual replacement unless they stop making a killing on the plastic crack they keep distributing.

Riri isn't even the first time Tony Stark has gone into a coma and had a black person sub for him as Iron Man. Now TECHNICALLY, you COULD argue that Fury and Batwoman have been "replaced" in that White Fury has kinda fallen of the map and Jackson Fury seems to be pretty well seated as the permanent fill-in, and that that other actress has fully replaced the original lady in the Batwoman show (I presume it was a legacy hand-off, I haven't watched it), but that's just one version that isn't the main continuity, like you said, comics Batgirl and Batwoman are secure in their places, other adaptations seem to like casting black women as Barbara, but that's not a replacement, it's again adaptation, and Billy Dee Williams and Earth Kitt were both black actors who played white roles in previous Batman adaptations, so who cares? By the same logic, Scott Lang has "replaced" Hank Pym. But you're otherwise spot-on: Casual fans being confused, Status-Quo Warriors pushing narratives, actual alt-right conspiracies smuggled into the brains of otherwise normal people. Keep up the good work, Dane.

Sometimes I like to remind myself that there was a time before all of... this when we had started to figure out how fandoms worked. TFWiki has an entry that started in 2011 called "Ruined FOREVER" which exists to mock the propensity of some people in the Transformers fandom to scream bloody murder and declare that Transformers has been, as the title says, "Ruined FOREVER" every time a new iteration or change to the franchise happens. The snark in the opening paragraph is gold: "Fans realize something Hasbro does not: that robust 38-year-old billion-dollar franchises, while seemingly healthy, are in actuality as fragile as two bricks tied together with tissue paper. One mistake, one bad mis-step will cause the entire thing to shatter and fall apart; and Transformers would be ruined forever. Fortunately, there is hope. The Transformers fanbase has resolved to remain ever vigilant against something that could Ruin Transformers Forever, and call out a warning if they see something that could potentially do so."

Thank goodness I didn't become full on anti-SJW and escaped around 2017 when TLJ came out and was attacked by the reactionaries I thought were legit sources. I could've ended up like that guy being debunked in this video.

it's ironic how people who are fed a narrative are arguing about media feeding them an agenda rather than stories outside of traditional expectations are being told.
