One thing that always gets me about Bruce Lee's alleged strength abilities is that IIRC I've never been able to find a single claim that originated from Bruce himself along these lines. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but it seems like a bunch of things made up, or perhaps misinterpreted, by other people after the fact. Not a shred of evidence of any of these feats, no recorded legitimate strength achievements, and meanwhile he famously broke his back doing Good Mornings with 135lbs; not exactly the actions of someone with superhuman strength and a great mastery of effective strength training.

First off I know he wasn't "the greatest most powerful material artist to ever live" but give him some credit. He'd been in fights while he was alive he boxed in highschool (I wouldn't say he was the all time best boxer by any means, he was in highschool mind you) he also fought Wong Jack man and won, he wasn't happy with his victory and it inspired him to make Jeet kun do. Other than that he sparred with his students obviously not a "real fight" but it's still fighting experience. Your going a little too far the other way here. The truth lies somewhere in the middle, Bruce Lee wasn't super human but he wasn't garbage trash either.

Bruce Lee was truly a visionary. He realized what works and what doesn't and he began to train in the useful stuff (AKA boxing , wrestling etc). He was insanely athletic and I do believe that, had he lived a longer life , he could have become a great fighter in his weight class. That being said, he never fought any noteworthy opponent in his lifetime. That is just reality. Hearsay about streetfights means nothing. The fact that you beat up random people does not mean that you could defeat Tyson or any trained fighter for that matter. Lee should be remembered as a visionary. His philosophy is his contribution to the martial arts. I am making fun of the myth that he was some Uber megafighter str8 outta Mortal Kombat.
@dinninfreeman2014
@dinninfreeman2014 4 жыл бұрын
@@Panagiotis1709 yeah I mostly agree I think Tyson would easily take the win against Bruce Lee in a boxing match and maybe even under any circumstances. He had more noteworthy fights and was in a completely different weight class. That being said I think Bruce would put up a decent fight, he had technical know how and demonstrated good reactions in the sparring much I saw. The fighters he trained with said he hit like a heavy weight (could be an exaggeration but I bet he hit pretty hard for his size) but either way it's not his fighting prowess or even his specific training methods that made him great it was his Philosophy and his mindset ( that and his unending charisma)

From a physics guy who also loves martial arts: the force of your attack alone only tells you how much you changed the motion of your target in a given amount of time, so it doesn't tell you much about how effective a strike is, only how much you "pushed" your target. PSI is a measure of pressure, or force per area. The pressure of your attack tells you how much force you've packed into just the contact area between you and your target. Pressure is the quantity you want to measure if you want to know how much your attack "hurts".

Sounds great. It's really a respectful way to keep him as human as the rest of humanity while giving him the real credit for his real accomplishments. I remember watching Enter the Dragon on VHS when I was a kid in the late 70s and early 80s and it got me into Martial arts for life. I realized early on that Kung fu, aikido and other fancy stuff was worthless when I started wrestling in Jr high and all the Kung fu dudes would want to "spar" with the wrestlers because they watched too many movies. Takedown. Headlock. Done for. Repeat. BJJ and MMA sealed the death warrant on King fu. But Lee left an amazing legacy. But too many people made him onto the Kung Fu Jesus.

@@iamalpharius9483 most of Kung Fu cannot be practiced on another human being without going to jail or prison. Hung Gar five fist style Kung Fu for example. You cannot practice that without jail or prison time ! Wing Chun style kicks are used regularly by Jon Bones Jones, at least that's what they were calling them years before he was born! @@chrislampkin7896 I've been training for decades. And I've done 10 years for assault in Missouri. I know exactly what it takes to go to jail in a fight. Defending myself ruined my life 15 years ago. And yeah, aiming to damage someone is always an option ...if you are willing to pay the price. Problem is that a street fighter with no training but a lot of experience is one of the most dangerous fighters alive. And Kung fu "training" never can prepare someone for a real life or death situation unless that person has been there and knows how fast and violent things can get. In prison I saw a lot of guys talk about how many people they could fight.....until someone with nothing to lose gave them a trip to St. Luke's medical center with a full set of smashed facial bones. Kung fu is for kids who have never seen what the real world puts down. Its damn sad to say. But all those technical stunts dont work when you are in a headlock getting your neck cranked off your body and someone hammering your face in with very little regard for you getting home safely, petting your dog, kissing youroved ones and going to bed

Think he was nice 👍🏻 to a real Fighter. I’m sure he wouldn’t damage the Ego of a champion ( Duran ) ! This Bruce Lee says to the son’s of Gene Tunney, by a Dinner 🍲 in Hong Kong: ( Bruce ) I would destroy your dad in his prime. I have not only hands 🙌 I have my longest weapon, my Side kick. Notice: !!! He was a heavyweight Champion in Boxing 🥊 ! Think the main fact is in Boxing ring with boxing rules or a Street Fight without rules !!! Later wrote M.Ali in his book or says to write ✍️! ( M.Ali ) In a Boxing Ring, I kill him. In the Street without rules he would kill me. I will nothing take from Duran away: He is sure a good champ. But Street Fighting is another Level. Look former Boxing 🥊 Champions in UFC or mixed martial arts, F. Botha. He was not interested to make enemies, think 🤔 he would let ways to put this like Norris in his films 🎥.

As for coke cans we are not talking about modern day cans we are talking hardcore 70s cans, impossible to do unless you were Bruce. Having read his workout book verified by his coach, he managed to deadlift over 700Lbs and hold a 90Lb barbell for over 30 seconds in front of him. Try it you'll find it is very very difficult.

Bruce wasn't the first Chinese instructor to teach non-Chinese students. T.Y. Wong's 1961 book has a photo of him instructing San Francisco police officer Erle Maddox sometime between 1959 and 1960 and there is a picture of Noel O'Brien, a then teenager, in 1961 studying at his San Francisco school. The myth that the 1964 challenge match by Wong Jack Man was predicated upon Bruce's supposed breaking of the "kung fu color line" was debunked by Charles Russo and also by Mathew Polly. (That fight was more about Bruce's on stage criticisms towards traditional training and teaching methods, rather than teaching white students.) Even before their books, however, Robert W. Smith had studied Chinese martial arts in Taiwan when he was stationed there in the 1950's, and William E. Fairburn had studied "Chinese boxing" (they didn't call it "kung fu" in Shanghai in the 1920's) from an instructor named Tsai Tai Tsung in the 1920's. It sounds better to say that "Bruce was challenged by Wong Jack Man, because he fought to teach anyone, regardless or race," rather than to say "Bruce was challenged because he got mad at some hecklers at a demo he did in 1964 during an off-night."

As bad as some of Bruce Lee's fanatics are, in my experience *Bruce Lee's haters are far worst.* I used to respect BL haters more but after talking with some of them it seems all they do is tell lies about what you actually say in an attempt to produce straw-men and make it seem like you're the one that's irrational. I once told a hater that Lee had trained grappling and he magically morphed my statement into a claim that he was a better wrestler than Nurmagomedov AND repeatedly insisted I lived up to this imaginary straw-man! I told another hater that Bruce Lee competed in an amateur highschool boxing match and even though I'd successfully debunked his implication that this was untrue, instead of respectfully conceding, this goalpost moving fool started complaining about Bruce Lee not competing in kickboxing and then morphed my simple factual amateur boxing statement into a false implication about Lee being an invincible "fighting icon". At least the Bruce Lee fanatics are typically just mislead or just get a little carried away. I don't think they're generally intentionally deceitful. The Bruce Lee haters seem to just be mostly chronic, butthurt, intentionally deceitful liars. It's like they accidentally walked in on their mothers fapping to old Bruce Lee footage or something and have held a grudge ever since. SMH. I am 47, in my 20's I did TKD, kickboxing and boxing. I enjoy hitting and kicking the heavybag, but when I do try to it beats my body up so much that I have a hard time healing up from it (doing my daily activities) and fear injuring myself. At 35 years old I started shoeing horses, which is very demanding on my body especially legs, back, and wrists. At about 40 years old I had to cut back on my horse shoeing cause the amount of work I was doing was going to lead to injuries if kept up (I am a part time horse short, also work full time as a meter reader for gas company). I can generally lift a few weights once a week without fear of injuries taking a week off when I have a big week of horse shoeing and taking time off of lifting weights when short of people at work causing an increase in work load. I have quit hitting the heavy bag because I have told myself that it's just not something my body can handle anymore at my age with my physical work load. The question I have though, is my thought correct or do I need to work up to a good heavybag routine differently? If I were to approach starting a heavy bag routine differently is this something I can do without injuries, and how would you recommend going about that?

I agree with most of your assessments. Just a couple notes, in 1960 they started measuring striking force (punch, kick, elbow, knee) based on known pressures needed to break certain types of concrete and other materials. So it could be possible to guess Lee's hitting power based on what he could break (thoughno known video or other has shown it). Also nunchucks have been measured to hit at 800kg of force moving at roughly 160kph at the tip. Lee seems to have the power and speed to hit at that or maybe even higher. You could also make the leap that Lee could easily "punch" far more than 9 times a second considering how fast he has been shown to be. Rest of the myths are hilarious though. Nice video mate!

Here is all you ever wanted to know about Nunchaku physics. It's elastic collision, the lightest type. Physics Deflection happens when an object hits a plane surface. If the kinetic energy after impact is the same as before impact, it is an elastic collision. If kinetic energy is lost, it is an inelastic collision. Collision is short-duration interaction between two bodies or more than two bodies simultaneously causing change in motion of bodies involved due to internal forces acted between them during this. Collisions involve forces (there is a change in velocity). The magnitude of the velocity difference just before impact is called the closing speed. All collisions conserve momentum. What distinguishes different types of collisions is whether they also conserve kinetic energy. The line of impact is the line that is collinear to the common normal of the surfaces that are closest or in contact during impact. This is the line along which internal force of collision acts during impact, and Newton's coefficient of restitution is defined only along this line. Collisions are of three types: perfectly elastic collision inelastic collision perfectly inelastic collision. Specifically, collisions can either be elastic, meaning they conserve both momentum and kinetic energy, or inelastic, meaning they conserve momentum but not kinetic energy. An inelastic collision is sometimes also called a plastic collision. A “perfectly inelastic” collision (also called a "perfectly plastic" collision) is a limiting case of inelastic collision in which the two bodies coalesce after impact. The degree to which a collision is elastic or inelastic is quantified by the coefficient of restitution, a value that generally ranges between zero and one. A perfectly elastic collision has a coefficient of restitution of one; a perfectly inelastic collision has a coefficient of restitution of zero. Types of collisions There are two types of collisions between two bodies - 1) Head-on collisions or one-dimensional collisions - where the velocity of each body just before impact is along the line of impact, and 2) Non-head-on collisions, oblique collisions or two-dimensional collisions - where the velocity of each body just before impact is not along the line of impact. According to the coefficient of restitution, there are two special cases of any collision as written below: A perfectly elastic collision is defined as one in which there is no loss of kinetic energy in the collision. In reality, any macroscopic collision between objects will convert some kinetic energy to internal energy and other forms of energy, so no large-scale impacts are perfectly elastic. However, some problems are sufficiently close to perfectly elastic that they can be approximated as such. In this case, the coefficient of restitution equals one. An inelastic collision is one in which part of the kinetic energy is changed to some other form of energy in the collision. Momentum is conserved in inelastic collisions (as it is for elastic collisions), but one cannot track the kinetic energy through the collision since some of it is converted to other forms of energy. In this case, coefficient of restitution does not equal one. In any type of collision there is a phase when for a moment colliding bodies have the same velocity along the line of impact.Then the kinetic energy of bodies reduces to its minimum during this phase and may be called a maximum deformation phase for which momentarily the coefficient of restitution becomes one. Collisions in ideal gases approach perfectly elastic collisions, as do scattering interactions of sub-atomic particles which are deflected by the electromagnetic force. Some large-scale interactions like the slingshot type gravitational interactions between satellites and planets are perfectly elastic. Collisions between hard spheres may be nearly elastic, so it is useful to calculate the limiting case of an elastic collision. The assumption of conservation of momentum as well as the conservation of kinetic energy makes possible the calculation of the final velocities in two-body collisions.

You're getting that second one all wrong. He didn't hit with nunchaku with that amount of force. He *KNOCKED OUT* that much force with them. He caused a mathematical abstraction of physical reality to lose consciousness by hitting it with a stick on a chain. That's quite the record to set and definitely impossible to beat. And I'm pretty sure record number 6 is claiming that Bruce Lee is a spider with 6 legs and is able to kick with each of them once during a single second (the other 2 limbs to make the 8 a spider needs are his arms, obviously). More seriously, though... A few things worth mentioning here: Punching and blunt weapon striking force *IS* typically measured in pounds, not pounds per square inch as was done in that NatGeo test. Pressure in PSI has been shown not to correlate as accurately to the damage dealt as the raw force of a punch in pounds does. That unit is actually better than the one you were using. That said, there are karate black belts less fit than Bruce Lee who can throw punches with over 400 pounds of force behind them, and a significant number of heavyweight boxers have had measured punching forces over 1300 pounds with a few peaking above 1400. Claiming that Bruce Lee or Mohammed Ali only managed 350 and that this was some kind of acheivement is an insult to martial artists the world over. Claiming that Bruce Lee was only able to beat the impact force of a heavyweight punch by less than 15% when using nunchaku is not exactly plausible either. On the rapid punching and kicking topic, Bruce Lee's speed was, like many other capable martial artists in his era, too fast for cameras of the time to pick up properly during strikes. He wasn't alone in this, and when filming, was among the many fighters who had to learn to slow their movements down in order for their actions to be captured on film. There is no video evidence of these kinds of records for *ANYONE* within Bruce Lee's lifetime because fast punches simply didn't show up on video. There's a video of an interview with Bruce Lee where he throws a punch at the air in front of the interviewer but all the camera picks up is his arm disappearing in one frame then reappearing in the next. There is anecdotal evidence that during filming - at 24fps - he had times where he and an opponent would perform 2 or 3 strikes *IN BETWEEN FRAMES.* This would necessitate the ability to perform at least 48 and likely more than 50 strikes in a second. Also the Guinness World Record for rapid sequential punches is timed over a minute and even when punching for 60 seconds straight the record holder has an *AVERAGE* above 9 per second. Similarly, that kicking record you provided an average kicks per second value for, it is highly probable that multiple individual seconds during that minute would have recorded more than 6 kicks, and someone aiming for a second long burst of kicks would land even more than someone going for endurance over a full minute of rapid kicking. And in the final, and most important part: Andre the Giant was reportedly 520 pounds and 2.24m tall. If Bruce Lee could kick a 200 pound man with enough force to ALMOST clear 9 (not 10) Andre the Giants laid out head to foot on one another, he could kick Andre the Giant hard enough to clear 3 Andre the Giants and land about a third of the way over a fourth. That said, kicking someone across a flat distance is *VERY* different from launching them vertically, and is much more difficult a feat to perform. being able to kick a 200 pound man so he ends up 20m away from you is very different from kicking him over 3 giraffes stacked onto one another's heads (also how would they balance?). This makes the claim that Lee could only kick the 135kg (very nearly 300 pound) bag only 5m into the air make a lot more sense when compared with the horizontal 20m on a 200 pound target. To finish this ridiculous comment, however... I'm glad when you said "the man, the myth, the legend" you only followed with "lay off the myth part" because the ends of Bruce Lee's legs are rather famous and definitely not worth forgetting.

Dana White still says "Enter the Dragon Island" is real and that they're still working on it. Stephen Bonnar used to tell the story about the time he fought on an island. He was coming in on a little boat and he sees some dude in a Karate outfit doing traditional forms. He thinks "hey I'm in Enter the Dragon"! Then he finds out he's fighting the dude in the Karate outfit whose name was Lyoto Machida. When he started getting his ass kicked, Bonnar started laughing and thinks to himself "Oh so he's Bruce Lee and I'm the dumb fool that's getting his ass kicked". Speaking of lbs of force, it's a useless measurement for "punching power". You can drop a 1 lb metal ball onto a concrete floor from 5 feet and generate a few thousand pounds of peak force, though only for a split second. If a weak puncher slammed his fist into concrete, he can probably generate 3000 lbs of peak force for a split second. This is why he will shatter his hands because he hit a hard and immovable object. The TV series fight science had every subsequent show with fighters generating more and more force because the target kept getting heavier and more fixed in weight. Randy Couture generated the most force because he hit a hard plastic head on the ground which had nowhere to go. The correct way to measure punches is energy and not force just like you measure bullets for muzzle kinetic energy. Rocky Marciano was measured on a military ballistic pendulum and had a punch KE of 1254 joules or enough to lift a 25 lb pendulum and have it swing so that it's 37 foot higher. In other words, it's like getting hit by Marciano's punch is like a 25 lb ball falling 37 feet onto your head! So what we should really be mesuring is Punch Energy, though it doesn't have the same ring as "Power Levels" like we expect from scouter readings. As for the "1 inch punch", you can see Bruce Lee doing a 12 inch punch-push. Is it really that dangerous if someone would just stand there and be hit and not get hurt? Who wants to volunteer for a normal right cross from a pro boxer like that? Bruce Lee fanbois go crazy nuts if you dare debunk this stuff. That said, Bruce Lee is one of the fastest punchers I've ever seen. In his screen test for American TV, he was demonstrating his punches to a producer. He stood really far away and his hands was really far away from the producer's head. He threw a pulled punch to within an inch of the producer's head in 4 picture frames (30 per second) or 0.133 seconds! A fast punching pro fighter like Vitor Belfort takes around 5 frames to land a rear cross punch at the same range. That's fast enough to land a rear cross power shot without any setup because the typical fighter takes just over 5 frames to react. Manny Pacquiao landed several short range leading left crosses on Oscar De La Hoya in 4 frames. Watching the frame-by-frame I can see Oscar see the punch coming but it was too late to evade so he ate the punch in the face. Bruce Lee was snapping a low lead hand to the face from a long distance in the same 4 frames! Does that prove Bruce could have been a world champion? Of course not since he never fought professionally and fighting is more than just speed and strength, and we don't know if he is stronger than other fighters. All we know is that Bruce is very strong, very fast, one of the first to adopt mix martial arts so he probably would have been at least a very good pro fighter. But it's not fair to crown him the king over other fighters who earned their titles much less someone like Chuck Norris who is several weight classes higher.

Just did a very rough highschool physics calculation on how fast the _"volunteer"_ in that 20 metre sidekick would have to be traveling through the air, for him to be able to travel 20 metres before he hit the ground and, unless there's something I've forgotten to account for, he'd have to be flying through the air at about two thirds the speed of sound. Adding in things like air resistance and acceleration due to gravity and my guess is that, at the start of his flight, our _"volunteer"_ would be comfortably breaking the sound barrier (or uncomfortably as the case would probably be) to get that far before hitting the ground.
