The only reason Chevy goes out of their way to make these types of videos is because they are getting their ass kicked by Ford. Always have and always will. These videos won't change that. Ford can make their next truck out of paper and it would still out sell Chevy.

Spencer Ferguson Gotcha. I do like the sound of a v8 (my 2004 F-150 is a 5.4 with Magnaflow exhuast) but I guess the current days of mandated CAFE standards are upon us. So Ford, as well as other manufacturers have to find ways of making adequate HP with less fuel and Ford's EB engines do that well. The next Ford GT and Raptor both use robust versions of the EB so we will see how they do in the real world. To meet the 2025 standards, it kills me to say that V-8s will be few and far between 10 years from now.

You can't compare your Ranger to the new F150. Of course your Ranger is going to rust as its made of a material that oxidizes under certain conditions. Your statement regarding vehicles rusting under the same conditions also requires that the vehicles be made of the same material. Your statment needs to be clarified. Aluminum does not technically "rust" it corrodes and, interestingly enough, the more it corrodes the more corrosion resistant it becomes. Any steel parts on the new F150s will be a weak spot but the move to aluminum is going to become the industry standard and Chevy will be eating their words when they do.

@wolfwitdabeanz32118 жыл бұрын
Actually, the reason why the military(present) uses aluminum isn't just because of it's lightweight and durable build but also because steel is more porspurous than aluminum. Meaning, aluminum is less likely to rust as opposed to steel.
@mecheng19938 жыл бұрын
I wasn't being sarcastic lol.
@faahQu8 жыл бұрын
@Thomas, aluminum is not only is less likely to rust, but aluminum doesn't rust, it corrodes. Technicalities aside, it will be interesting to see how these aluminum body trucks hold up over time. I work as a structural aircraft mechanic for a living and we regularly deal with corroded aluminum. Aircraft grade aluminum mind you. Which is one of those fancy phrases that the industry likes to use.
@wolfwitdabeanz32118 жыл бұрын
faahQu And with that being said the likely hood of the aluminum in these trucks corroding we won't see for the next 15-20 years. Especially considering that it's coated, painted and coated again. Even with it being cracked and sliced in these commercials is just silly. There is a reason why the military, aircraft and other have moved to aluminum. Yes, it's lighter. Everybody and their dog knows this. But, in this particular use it's better than steel. If, for example, something did impact the bed at a certain angle. I would much rather have something that is capable of flexing and bending to impact than to bend and snap because the steel that is used is strong but also due to it's nature brittle. It is incapable of bending comfortably without snapping. It's the same philosphy behind the use of kevlar as opposed to solid steel in vests. I'd much rather have the impact get caught and bend it than catch it and break it. Yes, aluminum in trucks sounds silly. Because it's never been done before. And frankly, the fact that Ford has gone above and beyond and made the first aluminum truck that is performing better than their previous and the competition just goes to show that it's not weak and it's not stupid. It's innovation. What everybody is also failing to see as well in these ads is that Chevy has been attacking the use of aluminum since they debuted it. But, now they are searching to do the exact same to even stay competitive. GM announced a $877,000,000 investment for its truck plant in Flint, MI to use aluminum it's next generation trucks. So if Chevy steel is so good.. then why are they following Ford using aluminum if they know it's bullshit? Frankly.. it's sad. It sounds like something a bone headed idiot would do. Someone comes up with an amazing idea and it works, they put forward all efforts to shoot down the idea. Then end up doing the exact same thing. It's pathetic to say the least.
@faahQu8 жыл бұрын
I'm not bashing Ford's choice to move to aluminum. I'm a Ford F150 owner myself and love it. I think it's an innovative idea and most likely a necessary step into the future to progress with better fuel efficiency. There are things you state that just aren't true however. The type of steel used for truck beds and body panels isn't the brittle steel you speak of. It is designed to flex and bend if needed. I don't know which alloy composition of aluminum Ford is using in there trucks but for the most part, unless it's 100% pure aluminum which is very malleable, it actually will not handle flexing, bending, and denting as well as steel. They don't use tempered steel on these body panels, which is probably what you speak of. Steel, naturally is more malleable than the alloyed aluminum they are likely using. I work with sheet metal daily. I can tell you that depending on the alloy of aluminum, if you don't set the bend radius correctly when bending aluminum, it will crack. Also, sheet aluminum has a grain direction to it like wood. If you try to bend it along the grain, it'll most definitely crack. Sheet steel does not have those properties unless it's a highly alloyed stainless that's been heat treated.

Wow! Great work on this video. Yes, this is a really stupid concept from gm. If anyone loads pallet blocks in the back of a bare truck bed, or throws a steel tool box into the back of a truck on it's corner, they're probably too stupid to work with a truck. Blocks come on pallets. Regardless of the truck you get, heavy duty work like this or hauling broken concrete for instance, a spry in bed liner from line-x would eliminate this problem.

Seems realistic enough to me. This test wouldn't sway me Chevy's direction all that much but it does have an (albeit limited) amount of merit. I wouldn't be shopping trucks for the limited amount of fuel economy savings the Ford may get by using aluminum here but that too could swing me towards a Ford if it's was in fact the case they do better in that regard.

Okay first off. A bed liner of some sort is a must. I would never buy a new truck and not have it Line-Xed or at least put a rubber mat or piece of plywood in. Second, I think I heard Chevy made the steel sheet metal thinner on their trucks to compete in weight with aluminum. Yeah steel is going to be slightly stronger than aluminum alloy, but not that much. Plus, steel once it scratches or dents, it rusts. Aluminum wont. That alone makes me prefer aluminum. I will beef up my slightly weaker aluminum bed with bed protection. I have Line-X and a rubber mat on top of that. If I'm going to be really rough on it, I may employ a piece of plywood also. I don't understand why they produce a truck with a bed of bare metal and paint? It needs a bed liner of some sort or your new truck after light use will look like shit in no time.

The women you pointed out was only in certain shots but never the whole group. This whole thing was cut and spliced together not as one continuous shot. You keep doing retakes until you achieve what you want. My grandpa's 1991 Chevy c2500 we through a short chunk of railroad track in the back of the bed you should have seen the whole. This chunk of iron was used for cutting brinks and blocks on. No we never bought new blocks and did this to our pickups period. Even when we demolished buildings we didn't do this. Yes a lot of stuff gets thrown in the bed of a pickup but you don't try to do this. You got back to the sixties steel and they didn't bend much as soon as they thinned down the metal beds got bent more. Personal experience and watching other people transition into the 90's pickup. In the long term any negative like this will back fire. All the ads that GM did about Ford Super Duty about 5 years ago did them no good. Ford has stayed out of this stupid nonsense says more about them and their product then ads ever will. It takes more to ignore an attack then not have one.

you understand that the body is aluminium and the frame is steel the impact on a ford and chevy would be the same and aluminium has a more tolerable crush zone and reduces impact ..right??

I think Ford did answer this commercial by performing a test with a golfer, an MLB pitcher and someone else I think. However I don't think there wasn't even the need to do so. Ford hasn't decreased their sales and if there was really a problem with it complaints would have been all over the place and media. So please chevy, just try harder next time.
@cesaraguilar858 жыл бұрын
No, Ford did not answer , the video you are talking about was published in march 2015 and this one from chevy is from june 2016, I think this is just a bad strategy from chevy , they have a good product, they should just show the people what they can do, don't trash the competition , that's tacky.

hey what's up bro as you can see I owned a Ford, I have a small complain with the that aluminum body, couple days ago I was working and I threw a piece of drywall and accidentally hit the back passenger side right on the corner and dented that part, now that sucks. and they call that military grade aluminum.
@JsGarage8 жыл бұрын
watch at 3:29 and see that the video is flawed lol. The toolbox punctures the bed on the silverado too. But wait they show from other angles and the cut isn't there anymore. Additionally now that the beds are damaged leave them in the rain for a week and lets see. Then leave them in the weather for a year and so on. You will find rust on all the bare metal in the chevy. Commercial is so lame lol.
@memesredacted5 жыл бұрын
The thing is, you can have the gash in the aluminum bed and it will still be fine. The smallest puncture or even just a scratch in the steel bed on the Chevy and it's toast because now it will rust. Which is stronger, rust or aluminum?

I had a Tacoma with the composit bed. I almost put the corner of a fridge through the bed, when I heard the crunch I stopped. It cracked it but didn't puncture it. Steel is fine (I've had/used many), I'd try aluminum without a 2nd thought. I'm a firm believer in rubber bed mats. I would put one in any truck bed no matter the material, or liner. On a new truck I'd go for spray in(factory or linex) with a bed mat on top.

I work for Ford, don't own one, but we haven't had any complaints about the bed. All trucks are going aluminum. The tool box test "the same tool box" t there are 2 different boxes one was empty and the other was not guess who got the full one.

Guys work in landscaping and construction do have things dropped in the back from a lift. They do it all the time in landscaping. We had gravel, smaller blocks and a type of gravel with rather large pieces. People who work landscaping and construction know that is a reasonable test. The point is that they seriously cut strength in the body. Look at those fords that were wrecked. The bed of the truck comes all the way OFF of the truck. The aluminum body rips open all over the truck.

Good review, truly a miss for GM's marketing dept.
@clubhousecoordinator68418 жыл бұрын
How is this a miss for GM's marketing dept.? They did equal tests on both beds. The Ford failed. The Chevy did not. I know guys who don't use bed liners. They don't baby their trucks and don't care if the bed gets scratched or dented. But, they would care if it got holes punched in by an 8 pound tool box being dropped into it.
@troypower47338 жыл бұрын
A miss in the sense that they are going to aluminum as well, so, looking at it negatively will come back to bite them where it counts. Aluminum is a very smart move. Who drops bocks from a loader from that height? Skid loading is normal that is not. Perhapd the tool box was dropped repeatedly till it caught the right dent that caused a puncture..yup...its a miss.
@xavier39618 жыл бұрын
Those test are designed to go after the uninformed. Also, who would get a truck that you will use to WORK and not get a spray-in or box liner. A spray-in should be standard feature on all trucks and optional to not have it in. Just ordered my 17 250 Platinum PowerStroke

@OldGlory17767 жыл бұрын
You said it best, "I'm not a truck person" Guys that use trucks hard will throw things heavy into the bed of the trucks on a consistent basis.... Last thing I want is a puncture from a sharp object tipping over in my truck bed. Trucks are supposed to be tough so you don't have to make excuses for them......like you have to for your truck of choice ;)

If anyone seriously intended to use either truck as a work truck Ford and GM would sell them with the same type of beds Toyota uses for the rest of the world. Aluminum flatbeds with fold down sides that are specifically engineered to fit standardized size containers (fruit baskets). These are both cars with beds. They were never intended to haul more than a mountain bike once in a while. But if a mountain bike will puncture the bed if you drop it in wrong - well that might be an issue.

I like how non of this is done live or in one shot. Nice fake right there. The toolbox amazingly held up well. No crinkled corners from dropping it into 2 beds repeatedly? Hmm...

I still haven't seen any customer complaints about trucks in the real world getting holes poked through the bed. They could make the beds out of plastic, if no one manages to break them or poke holes in them, then it doesn't matter.

You know when I pay $1.38/piece for decorative Cement block I like them to load them with a bobcat bucket and drop them from as high as they can. Because we all love broken blocks. Actually every time I've done this the blocks were on pallets and loaded from the rear with the pallet raised just high enough to not touch the bed. I certainly don't want anyone from GM loading my truck.
