I love your channel. The technical details are perfect. I’m an engineer and I work with batteries as a hobby. There are two kinds of batteries that are LiON. One is “protected” and the other is “unprotected”. The protected ones prevent over-charging and over-discharging as well as over current. The unprotected ones do not and rely on external protection. Guess which people choose for their vaping. Lithium ion batteries have a huge energy density. They are damaged by over charging and over discharging. Cheap chargers don’t behave and will over charge. Few if any vaping tools have protection for over discharge. So why don’t people use protected cells? Generally those have too low current to make vaping possible. The current draw to instantly heat to 200C is a lot of current and generally the protection on the cell would kick in, causing things to not work or work much more slowly.

There are still chrome plugins or other things you can download to bring the dislike count back. KZbin hides them from the average viewer but it still loads the actual count on your browser, just not visible but the numbers are still there to view if you know how to look for it or in this case it's as simple as downloading a plugin which takes no tech expertise, just click a download button like every other program you 'install' and the rest is done automatically. We still need something far better than a dislike count, stupid videos like the wood burning ones need to be outlawed...
@dannii_L2 жыл бұрын
@@DrakeOola Even if I was to personally load such a plugin, The average person does not have such a plugin. The average person who doesn't have the plugin is less likely to downvote a comment knowing that it won't display (from their prerspective) as a warning to other people, and are more likely to watch some of the content due to the lack of such a warning. Thirdly, they are more likely to register their disatisfaction with the video via the comments... watch time + comment = engagement, which is one metric that tells the algorithm it should promote a video more! This is why many channels will ask you a question every video to post your thoughts on in the comments. "What do you think about x? Let me know in the comments". Most don't give a shit about your reply and won't read any or all the comments. They just want your engagement for the algorithm and this is one of the reasons why 5-Minute Crazies does so well.

It can be placed under Entertainment because of how laws are made. This is why these videos could get away with so many outright dangerous lies. The problem with coming down hard on this is that it will open a pandora's box of authority abuse. As a society, human has a set of acceptable border, but the power to determine what is and what is not acceptable is very dangerous. Hence it is a very wet and slippery road. Of course, we can easily determine that these fake videos are fake because we have science to back them up. The real danger is when given authority, would it be abused? We are already on the cusp of abusive and selective censorship in news, where the authority wrongly come down hard on people with different political views from the mainstream media. Ironically, despite the outrage against Chinese censorship, Western censorship is more terrible and invasive because it is arbitrary and unknown to the public. Again, this comes as an irony, but people are not very aware that they allow the abuses themselves due to deliberate disinformed education provided by the leading authority. Accompanying this problem is when the platform where these videos are shown, refuses to take responsibility. This exposes the problem when lawmakers are directly influenced by companies through lobbying. The root of the problem of fake videos is caused by multiple factors.

Nothing irritates me more as a current vaper and former cigarette smoker than seeing young kids pick up the vape habit. It was started with noble intentions of helping cigarette smokers quit the habit. And then people saw dollar signs and created a whole new problem. Juul is especially bad about this because they *specifically* designed their product to give a MASSIVE dose of nicotine. More than a cigarette. Their entire intention was never to help smokers. It was to get people addicted to their product. They even openly admitted to looking back on old cigarette ads as inspiration for their own ads. Because we all know how effective they were at getting people to pick up a habit. They were also found to have advertised on websites geared towards children like nickelodeon. Something that's bothering me about vapes is that nowadays, people only want the disposable ones. I doubt that they're actually biodegradable, so we're looking at a new source of landfill.
@ducklingscap8972 жыл бұрын
It's not. Vapes create plastic waste. The device body and pod components are made of plastic. Vapes are also a toxic waste because of the heavy metals in the vape and the nicotine in the e-juice. And finally vapes are e-waste since they contain lithium-ion batteries and a heating element. In many countries there is no clear way to recycle them because of toxic e-liquid residue. One survey found that 8.1 million adults vape daily. Even if just one-third of this group uses one pod or disposable e-cigarette a day, that would produce more than a billion pieces of vape waste in one year, with no place to properly discard or recycle.
@XDrZaneX2 жыл бұрын

My sister is getting her Masters in dietetics right now. I recently proofread her paper about vaping and can confirm everything said in this video about this issue. A point I will add is that the flavors themselves are marketed to very young audiences - flavor choices, naming, and packaging often mimick popular candy brands. It is easy to see how kids and even some parents may see these and believe they could be safe for kids. Some of my friends are teachers and they've reported higher vape usage even in kids as young as middle school age.

@Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty Жыл бұрын
I highly doubt the parents giving these to kids knowing they have nicotine and THC in them don't know what they're doing. This is like saying jello shots should be banned because parents confuse it for being child friendly. They know better. And while smoking adjacent companies have ALWAYS tried the "get them young" tactic, colors and flavors don't equal child. You don't stop liking candy or nice packaging after midnight on your 18th birthday. This lets irresponsible parents off and punishes adults for liking their adult activities to be enjoyable. Banning flavorings doesn't fix the issue of parents buying their underage children illegal and harmful substances. As a grown adult who enjoys THC products who is the main care taker of her little sister 11 years her junior, I like getting high NOT giving my shit out to children because I can't be bothered parenting. Fuck, I couldn't even give her it if I wanted to because she knows she's not allowed it for medical reasons. She can be sitting right next to a bag of gummies and not even care, because she simply knows better and knows I'll get her gummies that are age appropriate if she just asks me. These kids can't even buy their own shit, it's the adults in their lives who are creating this problem. Don't get it twisted, I'm not advocating for anyone here but the responsible adults who are having to deal with this shit not being punished for a problem they didn't cause. Most channels I just unsubscribe it stop watching because their videos have shifted over time. Ann is different. She still makes good cooking videos but also has added these other info videos. Not for the money or the watch time, but because she's a mom. And because she wants to make sure her kids, and by extension her viewers, are safe. Thank you for this video Ann; being a former smoker myself I was very uneasy when the whole vaping thing hit the market, precisely because it was advertised as completely safe. A few decades earlier smoking cigarettes was advertised as safe and look where it got us. Such unfounded claims made by manufacturers, releasing an addictive product with unknown long term properties, should be penalised everywhere.

Never seen them advertised as 'completely safe'. Safer? Yes, because they are. No combustion, no tar produced. The main ingredients in vaping liquid are glycerine and propylene glycol. Both of which have been used in the medical field for decades. The long term effect is more than researched.

One of the scariest things for me as a pre-med student seeing those exploding vapes is knowing that the mandible (your "jawbone") is one of the strongest bones in your body. Imagine how much force the rest of your body takes when encountering an explosion of that degree.
@ulhi75642 жыл бұрын
I always thought the femur was the strongest bone, but it makes sense that the jawbone would need to be stronger, to keep the teeth in place
@josephhelms23622 жыл бұрын
@@ulhi7564 That is a good guess. The femur is the largest and heaviest bone, so it often gets conflated with being the strongest.
@eclectichoosier54742 жыл бұрын
"Strength" depends on the application. Without actual testing, controlling for loads from all angles, it is unlikely that any meaningful answer for "which is the strongest bone?" can be found. For that matter, one bone may be the strongest in one dimension, while being relatively weak in another. In terms of load-bearing, the femur may be the strongest bone. That is, load applied axially along the shaft. It may not be the strongest when load is applied laterally. I honestly don't know. It is likely very strong in that way, as well, considering that it experiences some pretty large forces due to leverage between joints and muscle insertions. It is possible that someone saw the arch shape of the mandible, and thought that since the arch is the strongest shape, it should be the strongest bone - but load on the arch of the mandible is applied from the side, not the stronger curve of the arch. It may, indeed, be stronger in resisting loads from the sides and front (such as being punched in the jaw - or taking a blast from an exploding battery) but again, I don't know. A lot would depend on exact shape, angle of applied force, whether there were any blast effects (brisance) and other factors. In terms of absolute strength (resistance to breakage from load applied) it is probably not as strong as the femur, considering that it smaller and thinner. They are made of the same material, after all. I don't really care enough about it to search for any studies on the subject. If you're going into medicine, though, you should be wary of any claim that is made without either context or evidence. (As I am wary abut your claim of the mandible being the "strongest.") I'm not a doctor, but I do (well, I did, when I worked as an aircraft mechanic) have to deal with structural components, and the direction of a load is a huge factor in determining the shape and orientation of any support component. Another factor is whether the direction of the loading will shift during operation. (A wing spar that will hold up the plane is great! Unless it fails under loading from the front - which it will experience as speed, and thus aerodynamic drag, increases.)

I used to run a smoking cessation clinic from the pharmacy I worked in. We were encouraged to get everyone to take up vaping instead of cigarettes if they didn't think medication or nicotine replacement items would be something they wanted or could cope with immediately. The idea was to get as many harmful chemicals in tabs away from them as quickly as possible and for most people it made the transition to not smoking easier. In the UK we gave them information where to get a kite marked vape, and told them the danger of ordering online or buying from cheap dodgy shops. While they are certainly not good for you...they're better than cigarettes if you ensure they've been kite marked and follow all instructions.
@Gatorade692 жыл бұрын
Well said. Vaping is better than smoking but yeah... Screw big tobacco. It should only be a maintenance tool. I have known a couple people who used vapes to quit smoking and then taper down on nicotine. Have a friend that will still puff on one without nicotine when he's stressed but He's doing way better than my mom who is a smoker.
@HowToCookThat2 жыл бұрын
I found it interesting in my research that the UK definitely seemed to be more pro vaping than any other country. Perhaps due to better regulation from the outset and lower rates in teens? Nicotine is known to promote tumour growth and recurrence (and on top of that the study discussed in the video indicates that nicotine could also cause cancer). Using nicotine replacement to help stop smoking and then weaning off the nicotine is a good strategy. Vaping a higher dose of nicotine and staying on it because you think it is safe is not a good plan. I think your advice above - following all instructions - ie having a plan from a health professional is the key in the UK.
@PupRiku2 жыл бұрын
@@HowToCookThat Thank you so much for replying. I do think that better regulations from the onset helped. The marketing of the products is also similar to cigarettes in pharmacies and supermarkets, where liquids and devices are in plain containers with warnings. There are vape shops that can sell whatever packaging they want it seems, but they only allow 18+ people to enter. If vaping was made by myself as a suggestion it was followed weekly (as with any patient I had) and the end goal was to stop cigarettes or vaping by the end of the sessions. Some people also used nicotine free liquids to deal with the feeling of needing the hand to mouth action. I would never suggest someone stay smoking a vape permanently. It's a very temporary solution for some people to get them over the initial stage of cutting it out.
@PupRiku2 жыл бұрын
@@Gatorade69 Yep. It's definitely only a maintenance tool. Everyone is different and can find different parts of smoking harder to give up. We had a zero cigarette policy. So if the patient told us during the course that they had smoked a cigarette, they would no longer be able to attend the sessions or get the medication/nicotine replacement items prescribed. It seemed cutthroat sometimes, but it ensured we only focussed on those who WANTED to stop.
@Gatorade692 жыл бұрын
@@PupRiku Ouch, that does seem a bit cut throat. People do mess up every once in a while. I know I have said I'm going to quit drinking but yesterday I had a drink. Love the examination of vape, Ann! I was a cigarette smoker years ago, started in 2005. I tried early vapes in 2008, they were really pricy and used these little cartridge systems (looked like ink cartridges used for some calligraphy pens), but it leaked everywhere and tasted awful... so back to cigarettes I went. I tried to quit multiple times, it never took, I was sneaking cigarettes, spraying with body spray and chewing gum to mask the smell, nearly ruined my marriage. Finally in 2012, when ecigs had gotten better, I tried again at the recommendation of a friend for a specific setup. At last, I could quit cigarettes. Within days my breathing improved, my voice quality improved, and my general well-being was vastly improved. I vaped for years, loving the convenience and the amazing flavors, having found a great mod and tank that worked perfectly for me and an honest-to-god well regulated (self regulated, but still a LOT of company pride) company to get my liquid that gave me full PG/VG (propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin) ratio and nicotine amount control and it came in a bunch of amazingly tasty flavors. In 2018 I decided I would try to wean off, that I needed to quit, because even though it was (in my own experience) less damaging than cigarettes, for both my health (again, from what I could self identify) and general smell and quality of life for my husband and myself, it was still a costly and potentially risky habit. After all, mods were exploding, popcorn lung was a concern, plus all sorts of other worrying thoughts related to underlying long-term exposure that hadn't been fully researched. It took me a good 10+ months, going from 12mg nicotine, to 8, then 6, 4, 2, 1, .5, and finally 0 nicotine. Every time the nicotine amount reduced, the 'throat hit' got lighter and took longer to adapt. Smokers will know, that throat hit is "the good stuff" that you crave along with the nicotine. It took some extra deep drags off my vape to adapt to 0 nicotine, but once I did, I kept up with the vaping and knew that over time my cravings would naturally subside, because there was no more chemical addiction. Every day I took less drags, eventually only grabbing my kit a few times a day. Then sure enough, 4~5 months after I hit 0 nicotine, I took my last vape and haven't looked back. That was in 2019 that I finally kicked the habit and it wouldn't have been possible without ecigarettes. I hate to hear that people are taking it up as a fad, especially teenagers. But I will still say for me, and other smokers who want to quit, this definitely worked for me. This method may not work for you, though, so as Ann said, definitely check with a health professional. I had no help (I live in the US, I can't afford our "health care") and I did manage, but I never would have if it weren't for ecigs. As bad as they still might be, for me they were better than regular cigarettes and were a life saver for me.
@cervine6662 жыл бұрын
I had the same experience. Smoked a pack a day of Red 100s between 18 and 22. After a couple of failed quit attempts, I switched to vaping at 22 based on a suggestion from my roommate. At first I went back and forth, but eventually I got a good setup that worked for me and completely ceased cigarettes. The immediate benefit was that I no longer stunk like cigs, my car didn't stink, and I didn't have ashes all over the place. I could be seen as a 'nonsmoker' by others and no longer was looked at like a second-class/trashy person by others. I scaled my nic back over a course of many months until I was using .5. Finally it got to the point where I was only vaping because I was afraid if I stopped having something to 'hit' when stressed, I'd go back to smoking. However, even that I eventually overcame. One day I left my vape at home and discovered that I just didn't need it anymore. I don't smoke at all anymore (aside from the occasional Bar Cigarette). But I don't think I could have quit without vaping, and while I don't think kids should be doing it, I wish more people understood how much it has helped many of us smokers quit for good, both nicotine and the oral/lung hit fix, and without suffering from extreme cravings and withdrawals. It's very easy for nonsmokers to decry vaping, but I don't think they understand what a helpful harm reduction/quitting aid it was to so many of us.
@yankis.2 жыл бұрын
Vaping opponents always talk crap about them exploding (which is not even a thing with factory made devices), kids vaping etc. And NEVER about how it actually helps people quit smoking. It already helped millions. Every ban on e-cigarettes is a win for big tobacco.
@cervine6662 жыл бұрын
@@yankis. I'm inclined to agree with you. If vaping were to be completely banned in the US, a lot of people would just go back to smoking cigarettes again, or go back to a cyclical qutting-failing-smoking-quitting cycle. Vaping's generally definitely not 'good' for you, but it's a really great quitting aid for people who need more than just the nic fix of a patch. I think a lot of people also just can't appreciate how hard it is to quit when you're poor and under a lot of societal strains, or why patches and gums don't work for everyone. Plus it offers such a massive lifestyle change to people who aren't even really trying to quit. In America, smokers are viewed as low-class poors, and even smelling a little like smoke at your interview can cost you a job in many white collar settings. People talk a lot of crap about vape fog, but realistically, vape fog doesn't generally make your house or car or clothes stink for long periods afterwards, and vapes don't generate ash and butts, or turn your nails yellow, etc. Even just being able to 'pass for a nonsmoker' is immensely helpful for many people and improves their quality of life so much. I often wonder how much of the backlash in America is just a form of classism that resents anyone associated with the 'class of people who smoke' not being 'punished' enough for smoking.

I experienced the same. Switched over and then weened off. I had quite for 4 years and unfortunately started smoking cigarettes again. Dumb, I know. I’ve recently started vaping again and was able to stop cigarettes pretty much right away. Even faster than the first time. This time though, I will reduce the nicotine a lot faster. I know nicotine itself in not good for you, ( high blood pressure, slower healing, restricted blood vessels, etc.) but it’s the lesser of two evils. I feel way better, and I think like five chemicals is better than 7000. Although, my goal is to get to nothing.

When I was about 19, I was part of the crowd who believed that vaping was safe as long as it didn't have nicotine. So I bought one at local smoke shop who seemed to know what they we're talking about, had a nice, fun cotton candy flavor cartridge and would just puff at it here and there. I have never been a smoker prior to or since then, and when I eventually ran out of liquid, I just said 'forget it' and never refilled it. Little did i know that I had already done myself damage. Unbeknownst to me, I had a hereditary condition called a hiatal hernia, which is the tightening of the esophagus, and unfortunately for me, it's high up enough in mine that it causes issue swallowing food. For awhile, we didn't make the correlation between my past vaping and my trouble swallowing. It wasn't until we were able to consult with a specialist that it suggested that the vaping exasperated the hiatal hernia. By that time, I hadn't swallowed solid food for a year, I was surviving solely on milk, and while at the height of the pandemic. I was able to have my esophagus surgically stretched 2 years ago, so I'm now back to eating about 60% as normally as I used to but it's an issue that will eventually reappear in my life. I believe I wouldn't have had to face this issue so early on if I hadn't started vaping, so my advice to anyone still thinking about vaping even after watching Ann's lovely video is that it's not worth it in the long run. Vaping isn’t for everyone. Clearly. Advertising geared towards young people is irresponsible, like MANY things. But vaping as a cigarette alternative has been a godsend to many people, and remains at least 95% less harmful than cigs. Less cig illnesses = less burden on the healthcare system.

Making a separate comment for this: One thing you didn't mention in the exploding vape part of the video is *counterfeit batteries*. You mentioned faulty batteries, poorly designed vapes, but I think this is a big one that should not be left out. Most people who vape seek out batteries from known reputable brands, however there's a huge problem of cheap, counterfeit imitations of those batteries being sold under the original brand name *even on places like Amazon*. Amazon have a huge problem with counterfeit products being sold through their website and it has really tarnished their brand in many people's eyes

Not even just counterfeiting either, most of the batteries she's shown in these failed explosion attempt clips are low current like the orange one is a Samsung laptop battery. Not all 18650's are built equally, that one specifically only has about a 5A discharge rate whereas vape batteries tend to have 40A or in some cases even more. That's 8x more energy it's capable of pumping out and it's not even counting short circuit current, batteries have internal resistances which severely limits the current and hence heat production. We've used these 'vape batteries' for years but you hardly ever heard about explosions before vaping because they are not built the same internally, vape batteries are more expensive than typical ones because they're designed for far faster discharge rates, that's why it's so much more common than hearing about a laptop battery explode even when being used improperly.

I'm a student. For almost my entire life I've been taught to never use drugs or alcohol, never smoke or vape. But for every speech we were given about these things, they always told us not to, but never told us why. Sometimes we would get a general detail about harm it could cause (such as don't drink because it causes brain damage), but we were never really given any more information under the belief that everyone always obeys the school exactly as they command, and that "if we tell our children about these things, they might want to do them more!" Even if some people obeyed, some people are going to wonder why and just be shut down, which peaks the curiosity even more. This happens until they are curious enough that they go out and try it, because they don't know the harm it will cause, and they don't understand why it isn't allowed. I really don’t encourage vaping because of the influence to teenagers these days, so many of them use them to cope because they’re depressed or bored or want to be cool/fitting in, and in the long it won’t do you any good. I know there is prescribed vape (basically permission from your doctor if you are mentally ill) and that’s totally understandable. However, it’s just hard to believe around 50% of young teens and adults have it prescribed. The worst part is that those people encourage it to non-smokers/vapers. It was so devastating seeing classmates from middle school who were chilling about their life, their only problems being about school, and have it ruin them by starting to vape in high school.

Coming from someone who formerly worked at a vape shop - No nic juices are technically safer because of the lack of nicotine. However, the ingredients in them haven't been long term tested for inhalation and your friends MUST do heavy research to make sure the oil fillers have been vetted as safe when heated or inhaled! Some oils - like the one Ann mentioned, Vitamin E Acetate - can cause lesions in the lung when inhaled regularly. Others, like essential oils, can become toxic when heated and inhaled like this. The risk of lipoid pneumonia is too high to risk and causes permanent damage to the lung, potentially even death.

I had a biology professor in college who would always take some time to answer any science questions we had every week. One of the questions was related to the safety of vaping. He said that "on the surface it seems like it SHOULD be safer than smoking so if you already smoke maybe give it a try but there's a lot of things that SHOULD work that don't. We don't know the ramifications of vaping yet so why test it if you don't have to? They used to say smoking was healthy too."

An oversight that I’ve just noticed listening to this is the accountability for the magazines and children’s programming with vaping commercials. Not only did the magazine and networks allows these ads, the program itself allowed the ads. They need to be held to account as well as the vaping provider itself

I’m a nursing student, and one of the things that was emphasized from the start of the course was to do research and keep an open mind. Don’t let your own biases interfere with learning, essentially. So after working with what limited resources there still are about vapes, the situation has improved over time thanks to some regulations, but not nearly enough. It’s just so disheartening to see so many of my friends, even my classmates, vape regularly. And, to clarify, they are all late teens- early 20s, and are not using them for the sake of quitting cigarettes
@murray222 жыл бұрын
Im also a nursing student and i keep that in mind very often! That biases shouldn't interfere with learning. Lots of friends around me who vape say "it couldn't happen to me" > until it does! Even when there are class presentations about the dangers of vaping (or smoking) they still think "im young, it wont happen now". I really hope more schools educate their students about lung problems and overall dangers & more importantly, more research for this topic!!💛

Really important to note that while Nicotine vapes have been banned in Australia, effectively no change has actually occured. It is just as easy, if not easiER to buy a nicotine vape here in Australia. You will not get ID'd you will not face any opposition even if you're a highschooler. It's not been banned at all. In fact I would almost guess that the ban has made things *worse* because now it's unregulated.
@22kaybee222 жыл бұрын
I feel like we were finally starting to get somewhere with nicotine addiction The chewing tobacco became seen as gross, and at best, dated The pipe smoking and cigars were unsafe and dated Then came the huge fight against cigarettes. The ads aimed at kids stopped, then all ads, then they had to be covered up in stores, and there were warning ads on the boxes. Schools started making anti- cigarette messaging a huge part of health class from a young age and then stronger in high school. We finally got to a point where most kids didn't want to start, and most people who already smoked wanted to quit. People looked at smokers not with admiration but with pity. And yes I think that's a good thing because smoking is extremely dangerous and addictive and even the expense can ruin people But then vaping became popular, and just because it was vapor instead of smoke, everybody thought that made it 'safe'. Like putting any kind of particles that aren't air directly into your lungs is safe. And it just felt like we went from being at the top of a mountain to sliding halfway down. It felt so wrong and backwards And I hate that it requires us the sacrifice of people's health and lives to realize this

its so sad. here in northern ireland, smoking was an extremely common thing that practically everyone did in the 1950s-1990s. then in the early 2000s people began to see cigarettes as dirty and dangerous and a majority of people, especially young people didnt do it anymore, and looked down on it. and it seems just as the cigarette epidemic became something of the past here, i would say nearly a majority of young people in northern ireland are vaping now, or have at least tried it, and it feels like all the work done in past decades to eliminate smoking is being undone.

Thank you for another great video! Sadly, my mother, sister (who has asthma) and brother are all smokers. My father used to smoke for about 15 years but has stopped. I'm the only one in the family who has never smoked before and never will. I think it's disgusting. But unfortunatly my mother used to smoke in the living room so me and my siblings were exposed to it and kind of smoked passively in our childhood. My clothes would even smell like old cigarette smoke. I hated it.
