If you read the Heartland books, they actually describe the entire process including what body signals you are watching for the horse to give. It makes more send than the snippets in the show.

Look up Monty Roberts. He discovered the technique. Amazing and kind man. Even did join up with a wild horse in the wild with no roundpen or any fences/tools ect

my thing is this... join up is a great training method when used correctly. It is not done correctly on the show. Its not just running the horse round and round in the round pen... its getting in front of them, changing direction, etc

And when the horse “joins up” on the show they just stop and look at amy... no, signs of compliance or relaxation. Ever horse I’ve joined up drops their head, licks their lips and has an ear on me

First time I’ve ever done join up was when I had fallen off my trainers horse when I first cantered after a very long time, and my trainer of course made me get back on but I was terrified that the horse became tense and very uncomfortable, I then jumped off and we did the join up method and after I ran around with the horse chasing me and i trusted the horse a lot more then before and he trusted me

Join up if done properly works very well for most horses. Pretty much anyone can do it if they know pressure and release with proper timing, rhythm, and feel.

The key reason Amy does such exagerated movements is because she's working with troubled horses. When you first start working with a troubled/wild/problem horse you have to put in more effort. As you develop your relationship with your horse you can do a lot less and still get the same response. Your level of effort depends on the level of respect your horse has for you.

Exactly. From what I've read (I'm not a horse person, just very curious), you would not typically use Join Up with a well trained horse, like this video shows. According to another video I watched, a well trained horse would be confused by the method. You can also see in THIS video how well the horse is already "joined" to the girl and really does not require any further joining. (Just my 2 cents)

Research Monty Roberts. He discovered the legit join up technique. Running, chasing a horse and changing directions and just pushing a horse around the roundpen is NOT join up.. Monty Roberts

A horse NOT familiar with you is not going to follow your sign language such as just pointing your finger as to which way you want him to trot or run. That takes training. So Amy's join up is seen in almost every episode. You don't like her method yet can't wait for the new season. Why?

It's easy to love a show but see that not everything on television is realistic. That's the magic of movies! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Heartland over the years! Can't wait to catch up on the most recent seasons.
